You do have a neighborhood drop box -- it's right in your mailbox. Look for the box with a slot.
Some streets have bigger mailboxes (hence bigger slots) and can accomodate flats.

Just moved here last month. There aren't any neighborhood drop boxes here? Crazy.
All you have to do is ask. My father in law thought they needed a drop box on the other side of the river - he wrote in about it, and the next day got a phone call "Where would you like it?"... within a week one was installed over by where Ralphs was.
As for the parking/traffic problem at the post offics, it's always baffled me that they have a huge section of undeveloped land behind the post office, essentially landlocked in between Kohl's, the post office, and Bank of America (maybe it's the bowling alley) on East Bidwell. They could always take that land and reconfigure tha parking lot - if nothing else, it would be a good spot for parking for the mail trucks, and they could put drop boxes in where they park now.

The USPS has cautionary signs on the drop boxes that indicate that they are not secure and that for better security you should take your mail inside the building. They also advise not to put outgoing mail in the community mailboxes or single residence rural boxes like our neighborhood has because of the increased chance of theft (identity and otherwise).
As for the property behind the Riley/Glenn facility, it's owned by the Folsom Lake Bowl owners and please don't even suggest the USPS use eminent domain to acquire that land! They should have taken the city's suggestions to better design the current buildling/lot way back when, but they didn't - they wanted their own employees to have ample parking and heck with the public.

Farley told me about the slot in the bank of mailboxes. But I would like to be able to send manilla envelopes off without a trip to the post office. (esp. if the traffic's as bad as this thread makes it out to be!)

The older neighborhoods don't have such boxes. We get our mail delivered to the front porch. It's not safe to leave out going mail there. So, as Terry said, we have to bring it to the boxes at the post office to be sure it gets there safely.

I'm not a fan of the bank of mailboxes. I miss having my mail delivered through the slot into my house everyday. There's something about knowing your mail carrier and hearing the sound of the mail slot closing. I could tell about what time of day it was without having to look at a clock. Another thing I miss is having the paper delivered to the front porch. Since our garage was behind the old house, the porch was the closest thing to the street. Now it's placed on the middle of the huge driveway about one foot from the sidewalk. Oh well.

For my mail services I always use the customer service desk at the Bel Air in Broadstone. You get the same rates as the post office, but hardly ever a line. They have a drop off box too. The new Raley's by Empire Ranch has the same service.

I kind of like the bank of mailboxes. It's a pleasant routine each day to walk across the court to the mailbox -- greeting other neighbors who may happen to be out.
As for the newspaper, you can solve this problem when you get your intended dog! Ours fetches the paper faithfully every morning. Boy, am I grateful for her on cold and rainy mornings!

Good memory! In the meantime, my daughter is taking on that roll. Now that the rain has stopped, she offers to get it every morning as we walk downstairs.

It's true that it's a nice way to see the neighbors. That's definitely a benefit.
