So Camay - u and I get to pay for the library due to the cc failure to act in our best interests???!!!

It a safe bet that if the advocates for these two expensive libraries (let's not forget the City's assistance in the construction of the library in the new high school) were forced to provide "significant" personal financial contributions to these libraries to pay for them .. they would withdraw their support! People quickly change their tune when they are asked to personally pay for something instead of putting the burden on all taxpayers.

Most of the time I back the city council but in the case of moving the location to build the city library, I think they acted way to soon. It did not seem like we were given much warning that they were thinking about moving from the old fire station to the new park site. Before I knew what happened it was done.

People out there, am I really mistaken about this or was this done to quickly???

I know the people that want the library at the park are going to say that everything was done correctly, but???

Camay - if u want the answer to your question - get a copy of the library commission tape for april, 2003 - and just listen - but of course if you go to the library to listen that tape and others will be "unavailable" so save yourself the time and go to the city clerk's office
it is interesting to listen to - it will make you wonder who ernie sheldon is a puppet for.......
oh excuse me = "that is an untruth" NOT

I don't think 10 years was "too quickly" in terms of getting a library here. The city council is responsible for making tough decisions, that's why we elected them... if we put the brakes on this thing now we may never get our library!

So John if they wanted the library so bad - why was the sign in front of the firestation for over a year
if you want it badly u build it or use an existing building
and we do have a library - it is on Coloma if you have never been there
and that would be case in point also
are u aware that the city of folsom has 3 yes that is 3 empty firestations

station 35 on Natoma
the fire house on blue ravine and praire city - which has mold cause the city would not fix the roof
and then on Oak Avenue

now those are city owned properties..... aren't they

and what are the square footages of those buildings? and are they designed to accomodate library facilities, or would you just suggest that the children's storytime be held inside what used to be a janitor's closet? it seems awfully short-sighted to just say "we have an empty building let's stick a library in it". Or you are simply unwilling to accept that our city has grown so much that we need a much larger facility to serve our needs?

And which fire house on Oak Avenue are you referring to? I've seen fire equipment at the one on Blue Ravine as recently as two weeks ago, and I'm pretty sure the one on the north side of the river is still active, but you'd probably have more info on that.

I haven't followed this topic closely because I'm pretty neutral on the park issue. I do like the idea of a nice new library with room to read, study, relax, etc. However, my perception (and that should be important to city officials) is that they've pushed this through without due concern for a large chunk of the population's wishes. If I'm misinformed on the issue, then I'd say the city needs to set the record straight somehow with folks like me.

Like I said, I haven't followed it closely, did I miss the part where concerns about the incredible traffic problems on Natomas were addressed? I don't even like to drive over there for my occassional dentist appointments, so I don't anticipate wanting to visit there in the late afternoons unless it's completely necessary - which is pretty unlikely. I'd love to see the library somewhere along south Bidwell or Iron Point, where traffic isn't nearly as frustrating. Doesn't the city own land next to the high school?

One last thing I don't understand, why do the "library in the park" supporters seem so hostile and angry at those petitioning for a vote? I like libraries too, but it doesn't seem like anything to angry about to me...

my 2 cents

pampchef lady - thank you for your comments
it has been my lifelessons that when a person is so angry at another other a situation that they are in denial over there wrong doing- i.e. got caught w/their hand in the cookie jar

and arnold dear - have u ever heard of remodeling, enlarging or tearing it down
and reck your eyes - there is no one at the firestation at blue ravine and praire city
if they are the city is going to be incurring more workers comp cases from employees

Whenever we speak, all you people that want the new library at the park think that we do not want a new library.

That is so far from the truth. Most of us want a new library, we just don't like the way the library commission, city council and parks and rec went about changing from the fire station to the park so quickly.

Can any of you back up and look at what happened and how fast it happened. Did I receive a letter to my home informing me that this was taking place. No we thought all along that it was going to be at the old fire station. If it was not big enough then they could have expanded it.

Not against a new library....

well that's my point waterbaby - you make it sound like the fire stations themselves can be used just as they are, as if that would be some inexpensive thing to do, but then you say the buildings have hazards that would be expensive to fix - so I don't understand where the potential savings is. It seems that you would have to pay for the demolition of an unsafe building and construction of newer, larger building - nevermind whatever potential impacts would be associated with all of those sites.

And I didn't communicate my question well - I was picturing the Oak Avenue/Blue Ravine station, and you assumed I meant the Prairie City/Blue Ravine station, which I know to be vacant. So what about the Oak Avenue/Blue Ravine station - is that one empty to now? Just curious, not asking with respect to potential library sites.

But the firestation thing came up in response to the claim that the city had to use the park because they already own it, when they "already own" other properties as well. Would they have to be remodeled? Of course, but that may very well be cheaper than a new building from scratch with all the water, electricity, etc. But the point is, did they look into those other options? I haven't heard about it, if so. That's what people are talking about...

With the exception MAYBE of the old fire station next to City Hall, the other abandoned fire stations seem to have little space available for sufficient parking. (Perhaps I'm wrong. This is just the appearance I get from the street.)

Additionally, some citizens have voiced concern about traffic on Natoma with respect to a new library in the park. Imagine, hypothetically, bringing your child to a library on the corner of Blue Ravine and Prairie City on a weekday after school in the midst of commute traffic. (No better than a similar scenario on Natoma St.)

A sufficient library for Folsom is LONG OVERDUE. We have plans for a beautiful facility that can serve an important educational and cultural role for the entire community. How much longer would the community have to wait for an adequate facility if we have to go back to square one?
