Just an update for these who were wondering where is Beck's response today????

Today I went to Beck's on Folsom Blvd to meet Lara and check what is current Beck's decision.
When I came to the customer service office and explained matter of my visit, the lady went to call for Lara ( Beck's CS manager).
After 5 minutes Lara came out with piece of paper in her hand, I asked her permission to record her response, but looks like it was bad idea, she didn't like it and just gave me the paper while commenting that this is official Beck's position and hurried up to disappear...
So this is what was printed on this paper ( seems to me this "Official statement" was done in 5 minutes I was waiting for her)

I've left the text as is and only will highlight interesting phrases :

"...Regarding My Free Travel.com; we are very sorry to hear of the recent turn of events, the news that they have closed their doors and will not be fulfilling their commitments has taken everyone by surprise. We are working closely with broker that provided the certificates, we are trying to figure out how best to get this resolved for our customers and as fast as we can. We will contact you as soon as we have further information..."

Here is a story about the MFT collapse. In it the furniture store is going to continue honor the rebates themselves. Wonder if Beck's is going to do that.

Interesting article but not quite correct. This is the THIRD company ... not the second. I did email Mr. Hathaway and let him know.

It would be great if the furniture stores would honor the rebates themselves. Unfortunately there are probably hundreds of people holding certificates they received from companies that are out of business.

New article regarding local impact of MFT. 30 local nonprofits used it for fund-raising.

Anyone get a response from Beck's regarding what they plan to do?

My memory is bad today - well, actually many days lately, but wasn't there a big Beck's scandal sometime in the mid to late 90's? I'm thinking a teenage girl and older worker/manager were involved. They were neighbors and lived in EDH. There was legal trouble, maybe some jail time for someone .....

Does anyone remember this?

I just remember not wanting to purchase anything from there after the incident.

The son of Beck's is a registered sex offender. He dated a teenager and then married her.

I have heard that KOVR Channel 13 Call Kurtis will be doing a story on the Beck's free grocery problem sometime in the near future, possibly this week. If I get more information, I will post it here.

I have had absolutely no response from Beck's, despite numerous attempts to reach them.

I did hear from the Dept. of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Home Furnishings, which is taking the complaint seriously, and investigating possible violation of law. I encourage others to also file a complaint, so they know the extent of the problem.

Better Business Bureau complaint yielded the same verbatim response as given to Folsom2008.

Interesting read about the local fundraising stuff. I know that guy. I would think most people who donated would just blow it off. They actually donated just to get a 5/1 return on their investment???? Not likely.

I'll bet less than 10 % would even be interested in any further action. Like I've stated before, I bought several of them to use with my business, and handed out about 36 of them (6-7 months ago??) and have not gotten one phone call about either company.

mrpickle.gif SacDj returns again with more useless information. mrpickle.gif

You handed out "about" 36 or you handed out 36? Either way congratulations on your sucessful scam. If the fundraising companies were wanting donations they would "ask" people for donations. They were reselling the vouchers at a higher value and making a profit. They should refund everyones "donation" or be prepared for court.

Ah, OK, cool. Another fine comment. Thanks for clearing that up. So you only donate to causes when you can benefit somehow from it? That explains your cloudy disposition. angry.gif

But you just keep watching and reading....I'll bet hardly anyone who "donated" and got the cards will demand a refund.

You are getting it totally backwards. I have no problem with donating.

Case 1)
*Knock Knock Knock*
Fundraiser: Would you like to donate some money to XXX? If you donate more than $100 you will get this gas/grocery voucher and you will get $500 back within 2 years.
Me: *Thinking to myself, well I was going to donate $20 bucks but if I can get $500 back I will definitely donate $100* Sure! Here is $100

Case 2)

*Knock Knock Knock*
Fundraiser: Would you like to donate some money to XXX?
Me: Yeah I love XXX, here is $100.
Fundraiser: Here is a gas/grocery voucher we are giving out for everyone that donated!

Now since the fundraising company bought these vouchers I'm sure they told them about it before the person donated. In my eyes they were trying to make a profit off of these voucher, these are no longer "donations" when there is a gift involved. The same reason why there is a gift tax on donations. If they would of given them out after the donation was made it would be much different, you would not be misleading anyone. Yes the fundraising company was mislead, yes the donaters were mislead.

If it was a donation why would it be that hard to see if they want their money back?

I am about to do this, but waiting for DCA resolution first.
We have to explorer first all mediation options, it will be good before the smal court starts.

Does anyone know if the groups that fundraised with this have a shot at getting their $$ back? We donated $100 to Vista's soccer team but it sounds like the team only got $50 and the other $50 went to MFT. I donated with no intention of sending stuff in, since it sounded too good to be true, but I guess I had no idea that 1/2 of the $$ did not stay with the team (I figured it was a much lower % going out). Iwish I had done some more checking...would have donated another way had I known how much went to MFT.

Anyway, just wondering if any of the non-profits have a chance of recouping some of their $... It's a shame that in additon to all the customers, some good groups got taken by this scam, too.
