I have had brinks for 3 1/2 years and love them. If the alarm goes off they call you first, immediately, if it is your fire alarm, either by smoke or you hit the panic, they dispatch first and then call, because in the event of a true fire, houses burn so quickly. I also have carbon minoxide monitoring. So I pay 27$ a month for police, smoke/heat, and carbon minoxide monitorng. And its great because if I actually set off the alarm by mistake, you can enter something specific to notify them it was in error and they won't even call you.

I used Liberty Bell for 3.5 years in my home in EDH. I was very satisfied. So, I have been using them again in Folsom for the past 1.5 years.
They allow you to have a silent alarm code. This means...if the alarm sounds and intruders force you to turn it off, you enter in a special code that notifies Liberty Bell that things are NOT okay. You can also set up a verbal password that does the same thing. The alarm will be disarmed but police will be dispatched.
I pay $24/month for monitoring.

Make sure you get an alarm permit from the county also. In our last house we had an alarm system and the alarm company didnt tell us that we needed a permit for it in Sacramento County. It went off one day and the police were dispatched before we could get ahold of the alarm company. Long story short, when the police showed up we got a ticket for $300 for not having the permit.
Are you sure about that?
We have an alarm permit from Folsom, but not for the County. Why would the County have anything to do with it?
Were you living in Folsom when this happened?

I hate to sound like a defeatist, but the primary reason your locks were so effective at keeping you out of your home is that you weren't willing to go around back and simply break a window to gain access.
I do think that an alert dog (the bigger the better!) is probably one of the most effective ways to keep unwelcome people from entering one's property. Of course, you have to like dogs and be willing to take care of them appropriately if you are going to go this route.

We are first time buyers - new to Folsom and planning to move in empire ranch Riata. After reading all the posts about frequent burglary, I was just wondering how much would maintaining a dog cost compared to alarm

Also Is there any neighborhood crime watch program here ?
