ngilbert, while humorous, started all this, IMO... and the problem is, everyone's trying to imitate him, because he's funny. I don't want this place to be devoid of humor, but I don't want every single post to be about wherewolves or apes. Supermom, your comments earlier in this post illustrate my point. It's just old, and you can't hear everyone's collective groans when you do it. The joke is just stale.

Hey - I'll take full responsibility for stale humor (mine, and I guess by extension others too, seeing as how I guess I'm a role model for strange people now apparently), but the increased rudeness and drive-by sniping I've been seeing going on here lately? That's coming from somewhere else. I'm a lot of things, but I'm not mean-spirited.

Posts, say, comparing liberals to herpes, for example? Please don't pin that Amateur Hour crap on me. If that's imitation, it's the sincerest kind of flattery I most sincerely do not want.

the oddball posts and rude posts are 2 totally different things. Ngilbert, you are definitely not rude.

I don't mind the occasional joke every now and then. It does help relieve tension in some threads. Just don't ruin posts by going off on totally odd tangents or changing the subject. People stop reading once they realize they've been suckered in to viewing stuff that's not relate to the topic title.

Hear, hear. It's pretty annoying to start a thread because you want to discuss a specific topic and you get people on there who just want to talk about how much they don't care about your topic. If you don't care, or it doesn't relate to you, don't post. Find a thread that does relate to you, or start your own.

I will say I don't mind the occasional tangent, especially if the thread has gone on for a while, but the more it happens, the more annoying it gets.

Okay...what if we created a ficticious neighborhood where people didn't always think in straight lines or on topic. Ngilbert could be the "whatever it's called" head of it. People could go off on tangents without stressing people out. On the other ones....people could play nicely? Of course, this would require me to pay attention to the category. All I know is that I read EVERY post by either Mylo or NGilbert-- IMO they're two of the the hilights of this forum. Of course,
I'm also the guy that can sidetrack almost ANY meeting I'm in with randomness...so....

...nevermind.

Okay...one last thing. Sometimes life is what happens to you when you're making other plans.

And right now, I'd like to make a comment about Simtown...but I won't.

Yes! Exactly! But the imitators, not so much. Again, thanks for your patience with this, John. I know how hard running a board can be and when people are being intentionally rude and deliberately posting exactly what you don't want them to, I can understand why some board owners contemplate throwing in the towel.

Perhaps we could do something like a sub-forum for MyFolsom Chit-chat? Any posts that go into conversations or way off topic could simply be split into there.

I know many, including myself, like to carry conversations beyond the original post topic. I fully understand how that can be annoying to the casual reader, though. However, I think there's valuable information that can come from continued discussion, and some fun in the meantime. I fully concur with October15's comment, above. "Sometimes life is what happens to you when you're making other plans."

I just think we need to more clearly define when the topic is done, and when the conversation (for those that desire it) begins.

I'll try to split topics more frequently in the future smile.gif

Oh, and the rude posts do need to stop. "Who cares?" is a stupid post. Don't read it and certainly don't reply if you don't care!

Point taken. And I shall do what I can to control my minions. As far as my Lieutenant supermom goes, the lady's seen combat, so I do tend to cut her some slack (plus it would explain *a lot* about her writing - no offense s.m.).

*But* those people who drop into a post and say "this topic sucks - why do you care? Don't you people like anything?" or whatever and then leave? I have no control over them and take no responsibility for them and do not see that they are trying to imitate me in any way, since I've never done that. Nor would I. They are a renegade independent group, answerable to no one.

By the way, if in the future you have a message for me directly, please feel free to contact me directly and privately. This site offers many fine tools that allow you to do so. Be direct. No need for subtletly or "you know who you are" and stuff. In fact it's usually counterproductive since, as my Uncle Forrest once said "I'm not a smart man, Jenny", and I have trouble reading between the lines sometimes or knowing when something is directed at me.

But just so you know that we're still cool, as a reward I am putting *you* John on my permanent Christmas Card Mailing List [insert evil laugh]. Too late for this year, but expect to receive Chapter One of my family form letter via bulk mail first week of December '08. You will receive the remaining chapters daily until the week of the 20th. Once on my list, there is no opt out option either.

I agree, Mylo, and I'll try to do my part to improve.

Also, can we all agree that a post of "HAAAAA" or "HA HA" OR "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" isn't necessary, and, frankly, is a stupid, unnecessary, and semi-immature post ??

Thanks.....Doug..

Gotta say, Ngilbert is my favorite birdwalker. He's very clever and so competent with the English language. I enjoy reading his posts even when they're off topic.
"Sometimes on purpose and sometimes by accident, teachers' unions have a long history of working against the interests of children in the name of job security for adults. And Democrats in particular have a history of facilitating this obstructionism in exchange for campaign donations and votes." . . .Amanda Ripley re "Waiting for Superman" movie.
