I think you make alot of sense....I'm leaning against the idea now. Besides, I don't even think The Golf Channel is in HD....a travesty .....That's NOT Comcastic.. football2.gif

Golf channel is in HD... it shares a channel with Vs.

All local channel are available in HD via the cable straight to the TV. If you want the other channels (ESPN... TNT... and others) then you need a box.

Funny. You can watch WGN from Chicago straight through the cable on channel 76-9... but it isn't available through the cable box.

Also... Channel 58 local (KQCA) is available on HD through the cable (58-1)... but is not available through the cable box.

Comcast channel 4 is NOT in HD. It is a standard def channel. If you want to see channel 58 in HD (if the show is in HD) you have to go directly from the cable to your TV and tune to channel 58-1.

My bad. Ch 4 is only the analog version of KQCA. For the longest time, they didn't have KMAX 12 in HD until after "Veronica Mars" went off the air. Good Day Sac is just in standard def sad.gif

If you don't want HD reception for your other TVs, then you don't need a box for those TVs. They will work just fine being connected directly to the cable. Of course, they will receive ONLY the analog channels.

In Comcast world, there is no channel 3-1, 3-2, etc. For KCRA, the analog channel is #3. For HD, the channel is 903. And for KCRA Weather Plus, it is channel 193.

I have not gotten caught up to the end of the thread yet, but I think I can clear some of this channel numbering up.

If you use a TV's built-in QAM tuner, the HD channels from a Comcast cable feed - with no cable box in the way - show up as 3-1, 3-2, etc. I believe these are actually re-mapped from other physical channels (e.g., 3-1 is actually a re-directed 113 or something - I'm just making up 113 in this case).

The channel numbers are completely different if you use a cable box.

You CAN get some of these sideband channels (KCRA weather, etc.) off the air and directly off the cable feed. They are not scrambled or anything.

Back to the DVDR... I suspect that the DVDR tuner is analog only. It won't tune in any of the HD channels, just the analog channels. If you upgrade to digital service, it still won't make the DVDR receive any digital channels. You might, however, be able to route a cable box output into the DVDR, but that doesn't mean that the recording will be in HD. It's possible that the DVDR is upconverting analog signals into an HDTV set to enhance its apparent resolution - this might give the impression that analog channels are tuning in in "HD". What kind of signal is the DVDR providing to the TV/monitor? (composite? component? HDMI?)

Thanks, Mando....to answer your question, the DVDR has the composite audio and the s-video to the TV...This subject has gotten more covoluted than I could have imagined...I guess in the final analysis, I might be fine just staying with what I get now...and the wife will have to record her program in standard def....also, can I assume that even if I upgrade the DVDR, I still wouldn't be able to record programs in HD....I would also need a digital signal from a cable box?? This subject is making me dizzy.
I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

To record HD, you would need a DVDR (or some other recording device) that understands HD. From your connections, I don't think your DVDR comprehends HD at all.

Alot of helpful info here (at least for me). Want to thank everyone who contributed. cheers.gif

The bottom line: Probably just stick with my box-less Comcast system for now (analog, but some HD channels), and maybe go digital/ full HD at some point later on.

Oh and one more thing about the poopy Comcast HD-DVR! I have become so used to working around it, I forgot to mention it.

If you fast forward near the end of a show, it will jump to the end. So be sure to hit rewind so you aren't too confused by the missing final act of your show.

Local Channel 40 (FOX) isn't available on DN or comcast in HD-it's just analog. That's too bad because I think FOX does have some HD programming.

I get FOX Channel 40 in HD....it's Channel 40-1. Yes, Comcast Ch. 8 (FOX) is not in HD, but luckily 40-1 is.
