Last I heard, money losers include virtually all local golf courses and softball and soccer fields. Parks don't make money either.

But we need them.

We do need them, but we need them in a way that we can afford them. I think there was a different proposal for the aquatic center, one that wouldn't cost us and arm and a leg each year, but it was voted down. This was before I lived here, so I don't know the specifics.

Yes, the aquatic center loses money. It's been losing money since the get-go and, if I recall correctly, it's not going to make money. I remember Kerri Howell posting something on this during the last elections, but don't have the time to research it. We (Folsom) can't support it.

I remember this long ago just before Reggie Drew became the mayor... he was one of the folks that was having a hard time accepting it...

If my memory serves me this was the last big deal that Tom Aceituno wanted to complete before he stepped down out of the council...it was his pet progject...

The deal back then was how they were going to pay for it(lembi)... which streams of money could they count on...

The bottom line was we all knew it was probably going be a money loser, but it was a nice facility and could be used with folks at the School district for their swim teams... and that's why it passed... it is a great facility and worth the money in my opinion...

HOWEVER...... Why we built a pool at the new high school I'll never know... seems a waste of money to me...especially in hind sight...which of course is always 20/20... but we had Lembi and I don't know why we needed the other pool at the new high school...

You know the dirty little secret is that the school district doesn't really like the city... and that started way back when the city said "no.. you can't build some funky" school... we want a nice one.. cause after all... it's not your school bond that passed to build it... it was ours"... and people here forget that...

Maybe Tess will give a little history here...

EDF, right on..

We do not have enough ball fields here in Folsom, but from the sound of things (I have heard it at the city council meetings) the schools do not let the Folsom leagues play on the high school fields. What is good for goose if good for the gander, so I have been told... They want to use our pool but more than likely not the other way around...

A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

This would have been one of the big reasons to have a FOLSOM ONLY SCHOOL DISTRICT...

We could have used the city facilities to store our busses... we could have shared facilities without all the hassle of the district....

but no... the stinking education establishment hates the city for getting involved at all...

Look at the dearly departed Mayor Joe Serna in Sacramento how he had to step in and shake that stinking school board up to get something accomplished there...

oh and the outcry from the EDUCRATS... they hate it when you start to "dis" them... even when they deserve it...

We're all on the same team here... except for them... it's got to be their way or you are just a total A hole in their eyes....

But when they screw up...? well... it's all about the "funding" isn't it...?

I remember when I was a kid and there wasn't such a thing as a heated pool!!! We swam in the summertime, when the water was warmer and the temp was up. In the winter, we didn't think of swimming. Are we really that spoiled rotten that we can complain if the water is too cold in the MIDDLE OF WINTER to go swimming? Are you kidding me?

And my high school didn't have a swimming pool that costs $150,000.00 a year to operate. Again...are you kidding me???? No wonder the system is broken. We spend, spend, spend, and when the money quits coming in, we wonder exactly what happened?????

Things aren't always as they seem.

I know first hand that District was considering eliminating the pool from the site. When they "floated" ( no pun intended) around, there was 'heavy lobbying" (I'm being polite) behind the scences to keep the pool in the plans.

The District asked the voters to approve a measure to rasie taxes to build this school and when they did it included a pool. The voters approved the bonds. Those who worked for the passage of bonds felt the District was pulling a fast one by trying to eliminate the pool, after working hard to help the bond pass.

I suspect if the District had their way, they wouldn't have built the pool, but were "pressured" into doing this, as sometime in the future the district may need the publics support on another project and didn't want to risk having alienated some supporters.

Here's another novel idea.....if you want a pool, build one in your backyard? Oh wait...can't afford it? Would rather pay the $2.00 or whatever it costs to swim in the city pool instead? Go figure...if you can't afford it, maybe you shouldn't be doing it.

And I agree...if the school system won't allow the use of their baseball fields to the public, why should the public allow the use of their pool to the school system? Tit for tat......?

I don't know what the liability issues are, but the district cries "Liability!" in response to everything. Everything!

I didn't know you're members at BRC. I work there at desk. Say "Hi" if you see me.

Liability issues could arise if a student is harmed in any way by a non-school person using the pool. Or, if a non-student may sue the school if he/she gets hurt in any way.

But, the Vista library is also meant for joint use. So, we'd have common public along with the Vista students in the library. Somehow they chose to overlook the liabilities for the library - maybe 'coz Folsom City may have chipped in some $$$.

Whats BRC?

Amazing that people believe that Government should continue to provide "entertainment" for some at the expense of the taxpayers! I haven't used a golf course, softball or soccer field or even a park in many years and yet somehow I am doing quit well; thank you! I pay for my own "entertainment" and do not expect the Government to provide it to me!

Regarding the $3M swimming pool ... Might I suggest that the parents of the students be asked to contribute to the heating costs! What a novel idea!

Good family entertainment facilities is what makes Folsom an attractive place. Otherwise, your property values would be sliding down the toilet even faster.

in a cold pool you would have to swim faster to keep warm.

I remember hearing about a fair oaks school pool they were thinking of filling in cause of the cost to operate it. there were some real high per hour charges for the workers rather than heat that was the problem

A pool needs to be kept at approx 79 degrees to be used for swimming meets/practice. If it's colder you'll cramp up and if it's too hot you'll sweat and be worn out after the first 10 laps.

I think supermom's idea of opening the school pool to the public in the summers is a great idea.

How did the school district handle the liability problem when they used to have swim lessons and public swimming at the old Folsom High School (Sutter Middle now)? My older two learned to swim there.

Also, it's hard to believe the Aquatic center is in the red. It is always packed in the summer and the swim lessons fill up quickly so it certainly isn't due to attendance being down.

I wonder what those behind the "heavy lobbying" have to say now.

Its really premature to be making any final decisions regarding this pool.

#1. The new school may be at about 35% to 40% of its capacity for enrollment. When the enrollment reaches capacity it may be cost effective to reopen the pool

#2. The Distrct made a savy financial choice to close the pool for 23 swimmers instead of paying the costs of $150,000 to heat and operate the pool now.

#3. At buildout, there will be 2 HS swim teams, the Sea Otters ( local Club team) and a regional competitive swim team all based in Folsom. Lembi will NOT be able to accomodate all these groups, so the pool at Vista will be needed.

#4. If the city expands S50, it may be awhile before a pool will be be built there, so Vista may be able to accomodate the overflow.

#5. If we want to be a desirable city to live in , then we need to build top of the line recreational facilities, along with cultural arts centers and other amenties. These are what contribute to making Folsom desirable!
