Am still shaking my head - totally amazed....

Pari asked for suggestions to her specific problem....but, seems like we are more interested in sermonizing...

people people people!!!

Dude-sky... we did.. didn't you get the memo..? most of said... "bike"... read over what we all said... and then after we gave suggestions.. we had to lay a little something extra because to complain about this is just a "symptom" of what is wrong with society...

Maybe that old "hee-haw" Senator Phil Graham wasn't so wrong after all... we're a nation of "whinners"...

oh and PS...

another alternative.. is change move to Rancho.. change your name to one of those that is an "under-represented" minority and claim you don't have no money.. and you'll get it all for free... and that "my friend" is where some more of the $$$ is going...

where's the money going...? Teachers' salaries... did you see that FCUSD has the highest in the area...?

When I was growing up and that was a while ago... we had to bring our own pencils.. paper and crayons...

When my little stink-wads attended Oak Chan in the 90's they spent money "classifying" my youngest little darling as "gifted" but they didn't have anything extra for him.. just more home work...

Now.. maybe you ought to look at some "alternatives".. like a "voucher" system... give you "mo" choices...

But what do I know... I just raised to great kids... inspite of all this stuff you folks are complaining about now....

That's funny... I attended Oak Chan in the 90's and THEY HAD the gifted program, I was in it... so, maybe your young little darling didn't qualify. Hmmmm....
The teachers SHOULD get paid what they are getting paid... they deserve EVERY dime of it.... but, that's just part of the budget, where's the other part going?? ohhhhh.. that's right, is Folsom's poor now and can't afford to supply paper for children to write on.... how sad!

oh no... they didn't really have anything for him... although he did participate in the "nature bowl"... which Barbara Deatheridge was good at... she was one of his favorites... now Barbara, and I forget my youngest's other favorite, was the math wiz bang teacher over at Folsom Middle school... but as I said...I forget her name...

don't get me wrong.. there are some great teachers.. just not all of them... and although I had some words with Stan Harms.. he was a great teacher...and both my boys had him...

Good GAWD.

First... the good news.

I appreciated the route info that was posted for biking from our area to the school. Thank you so much. =) I wasn't aware of the parallel route on Folsom Blvd. If, at some point, biking is an option, that info will come in handy. It was refreshing to see a few posts such as this that that were actually helpful and free of hostile sermonizing, as another compassionate soul observed.

Now... the rest.

You people are incredible. I was trying to ascertain if anyone had received/seen anything explicit from the school or district about the lack of transportation, AND if anyone had any game plans they'd like to share. But Noooooo... that's not what I got ( with a couple of exceptions).

I am one MyFolsom poster some of you love to hate, and that's a-okay. I don't really give a frog's fat a$$ what you people think of me. It's incredibly disappointing, though, that MyFolsom.com is like this and that a select few of you work so hard to make it so. I can have fun with it, but sometimes it's really tiresome -- like now.

It's also disappointing that some of you seem to think that as a Folsom resident, voter and taxpayer, I should not expect that my community support the needs of its families and expecially of its students! If these buses aren't available to students to get to school, who is riding them? The elderly? Jr. College kids? People without cars going to work? Intel employees? How many of THEM actually ride the bus? That's a pretty narrow service goal and a very shortsighted profit objective.

And. for what it's worth, I do not think people should be driving their kids to school if the school is within walking distance (about a mile or mile and a half makes sense -- even two miles in residential areas).

And please. She's not going to ride her bike with a 30 pound backpack. Don't bother posting about what a great workout this would be. It wouldn't be safe in an environment where she may have to stop suddenly or turn abruptly to avoid a hazard.

Regarding the biking conditions in ARC. Great! I'm glad there are lots of bikers there. We don't live in ARC. We live NEAR it in a small development near Sundahl School. So, I'm not sure that's relevant. Maybe so... but maybe not.

FYI -- we had already planned for her to walk or take a city bus to Folsom Middle from Folsom High after school most of the time. But, like I said before Fridays, rainy days and meeting days are going to be a problem.

I am not expecting anyone to SUBSIDIZE us. I'm not looking for low cost or free rides. I am looking for resources that will help us address this transportation problem, and apparently that's not available on MyFolsom.com. Not a very supportive community on these boards. I am not sure why I thought I'd find other people or other parents in the same boat. Maybe I should have posted this on the parent board.

The issue is really about communication and the school district's treatment of the problem. It'll save us around $250 in fees we won't be paying to the district for an annual bus pass if she doesn't ride the school bus. So, there is SOME benefit here.

On the other hand, while I think it's irresponsible of the district to cut these services, I understand that something has to go in a tough budget year like this. I just thought some mention of the issue should be on the school and district web sites so parents can start making their arrangements as needed. Networking with other parents to form carpools would be so helpful. Aside from canvassing my neighborhood door-to-door, I wouldn't know who's got kids at FHS and who doesn't. I'm sure some of the kids in our area are homeschooled, some got to parochial school, and perhaps some are going to Vista. There's no way to tell.

As to the comment about gifted classes being cut, my understanding is that any reduction in GATE funds will not affect services provided in the classroom. Teachers will still be serving GATE students who need to be challenged daily. But, there probably isn't going to be money for those after school fun and learning classes that GATE funds have paid for in the past.

So, if anyone has any other practical ideas aside from saving my daughter from becoming a fat, overindulged brat (you're all SO well-meaning and all), I'd be happy to hear it.

Pari...

hey one gal suggested you get your daughter involved..have her figure it out.. have her do some research and call her classmates... neighbors... do the web search etc...

nothing wrong with getting your little darling acclimated to solving a problem in the real world now is it...

none of us want any harm coming to your little girl.. however.. since they are cutting services becasue public education is wrought with over runs and waste.. (in my opinion of course)... you're not going to get much sympathy from us...

you know when you write a "text" it's very difficult to have the "texture" as you would in a normal conversation with people.. you can't see them smile... you can't tell if they are "teasing" or not... it's just text....

so don't take this all like it was a personal attack... there are those of us that just don't agree that we need busses... now for your daughter.. I can see a bus because I know the development where you live... so maybe they should provide it for those of you on the "north" side of the river...

However.. most of us live on the south side and I don't think we need busses for anyone on this side going to the high schools... they are all within biking or walking distance...

I will say what a shame it is that we have to have these kids take those books in a back pack.. because when I was growing up we had lockers... but we're so worried about drugs... guns and contraband.. and of course the expense of them.. they are out... but if they use a bike... they can sure as heck put them in some kind of satchel attached to the bike...

there you go now...

A Man just solved a woman's problem....

I only have boys but my friends who have girls are having a very hard timing convincing them they should get their licenses. Apparently there is no shortage of boys willing to drive the girls around so they don't seem to want to learn. One of my friends even bought his daughter a new car just hoping she would finally agree to learn to drive.

Pari, I think you have legitimate concerns about bus transportation for your child. It seems like your house is located at least five (maybe even six or seven) miles from the high school. That's a bit of a distance, especially if your child has to ride or walk alone. I do not consider myself an "overly-protective" parent, but my daughter will be 13 when she enters high school, and I would not like her to travel that distance by herself. All these people stating their kids bike or walk to school obviously live much closer to the high school than you.

I went to a high school about 10 miles from my home, and we had bus transportation. My mom was a single mom, and worked long hours, so without the bus, I am not sure how I would have made it to school. This was in the early 80's when school budgets were tight, also, but somehow the school district was able to provide transporation.

Pari, good luck. If anything, I hope at least you can find fellow carpoolers.

We no longer have children in school but;

If you have a 50 passenger bus picking up children and taking them to school, isn't that better than having 50 cars/SUV's trying to get up to the school for drop off? One bus against 50 cars/SUVs??

The savings on fuel alone, the pollution, and all the extra congestion???

Run the busses....

Pari

my understanding is that you have two options. Get your kid to Sundahl and have them ride the bus sutter (or from FMS to sutter in the after noon) then have them transport themselves from sutter to the school and in the after noon from sundahl to home.

Your actually pretty lucky that you live in the area you are in: the kiddo doesn't have to cross F-A by herself.

However the new light and crosswalk at the Chevron (used to be Valero) will be up and running by jan. (supposedly).

Your second option is slightly more risky --I'm not sure the school district would allow it. Have your kiddo bike from Fms in the afternoon to sutter then join the cave at Sutter.

However, the ride on the ARC bike path for a girl alone is down right stupid ( I can't believe someone actually suggested that idea). Lots of homeless and transitory folks; HS boys smoking (well, I'm pretty sure it ain't even weed) maybe meth? Fire crackers--grafitti--parties and alcohol ( school days included) And GASP: I know someone is gonna try to refute this--but it's true---we have a mountain lion actively patrolling from Beale point down to rainbow bridge---I have seen it three times and the parks rangers and a few police have been out on the trails several times warning people that the lion has been sighted by them. Since I live right against the trail--I can tell you--absolutely no girls should be on that trail unless they are levelheaded and traveling in groups of 3-4 or more.

Ps--there is a movement to try a bike group to sutter this year--but I think most parents are worried about the simple issues. What if a girl arrives late and the group leaves without her--or someone is sick and someone else gets a ride because they have an appointment in the afternoon, etc.... Potentially there could be a girl left alone to get to school by herself. Not a good idea. So, I think that several folks are nervous about a bike club to sutter unless we can get several kids, together.

bikes are a great idea, but my daughter would hate me for making her ride her bike to Vista on top of the hill... sure the ride home would be great, but the school is perched on top of a very steep incline sad.gif

no girl wants to goto school all sweaty at 8am sad.gif
