I would like to add a mention of a not so local Mexican restaurant.

Colina de Oro

They have 3 restaurants, one in EDH, one in Shingle Springs (the one I visit the most), and one in Diamond Springs. When I worked in EDH, then the EDH one was the one most frequented but now the SS one is only 3 miles down the road from my work.

If we're going to talk about not-so-local, El Novillero on Franklin Bl in Sac is the best Mexican food in the region. It's worth driving there, but go early on weekends to avoid the wait. The carnitas tacos and the carnitas enchiladas are to die for. I get one of each with rice and whole beans. It's a really nice place inside too.

Even with all the choices, I haven't found any traditional Mexican food in Folsom that is all that great. I have not tried El Rey and I need to. La Fiesta is good, but I don't like having to order at the counter. I haven't really been impressed with Sol Azteca, but that's me I guess.

The deck at Hacienda is good for getting together with friends and some margaritas and Dos Equis darks (that's my fav)..... the food, not so much. It's tolerable though.

I do like my fix of Jimboy's tacos, but that's probably not what you're looking for. They are the best "fast" Mexican food.

Absolutely!!! I haven't been there in a long time, but it's definitely the best Mexican food I've ever had. I even used to go there WAY back in the day when they had something like five tables. biggrin.gif

La Fiesta's only drawback, IMO, is that it isn't really a traditional sit-down restaurant. It doesn't affect the food, but it does change the feel of eating there. Yummy food, though.

Personally, I really dislike Sol Azteca. We've been there twice and both times were disappointed by a nearly complete lack of service and mediocre food. Our experience may have been the exception, but I'm not going to risk wasting any more money to find out.

Hacienda's food HAS taken a dive lately. Lately = for the past 15 years or so! Nice view, though.

I do generally enjoy Mexquite, particularly their pollo en Mole sauce. That dish could use a bit more chicken, but the flavor is great.

We haven't been to Q'Bole in a while, but the last time we went the Playa Platter was good.

We get take out from Colina de Oro quite frequently since they're fairly close by, but I wouldn't call it great. It's fine, but nothing particularly special.

We went to the place on Prairie City by Malabar a couple of times and had very good food and service. If we still lived in Folsom, we'd probably go there more often.

I haven't yet found any truly "great" Mexican food in Folsom or EDH, but there's plenty of serviceable fare.

I know. I've been around a while. Hey, at least they've got a good tequila selection, or they did the last time I checked. We used to take the new hires down their and put a few shots in them in the middle of the day and have them start taking tech support calls from other countries.

They could at least make a serviceable taco and the rice and beans were reasonable.

Last time I went the chicken and beef in the taco was completely bland. Tasted like steamed meat, like they forgot to season it before or after cooking it. My chili relleno was absolutely saturated in oil. Rice and beans tasted unseasoned just like the taco meat.

Plus the average entree price seemed to have gone from $8.something to $10-11.something.

La Fiesta and Sol Azteca.

Beware of sol azteca!

I was wooed by there most delicious chile relleno once. Yum!

But their margaritas taste moldy and the last time I went there I found a finger nail when I was halfway through my burrito.

Emphasis on the last time

Tacos, rice and beans for 3.75...wow how many tacos?

You grt one taco with the rice and beans, they are the mini tacos that are served and use two of them in one taco, so I just sperate them and divide up the meat and I now have two mini's... beside the tacos are only $1.55 each... and your choices are plentiful. Your choices are: carne asada, carnitas, pastor, pollo, carne deshebrada, chili verde, lengua and chorizo..

Loved La Fiesta until I tried Taqueria La Mexicana. Now I can't stay away. The al pastor is definitely a contender for the best I've ever had.

Taqueria La Mexicana. La Fiesta is pretty good too.

Oh, you gotta try Los Cerros Mexican Grille on Iron Point near Staples. Oh, my gosh, it's wonderful! I'm also a fan of La Fiesta Taqueria and Sol Azteca and most of the others mentioned here, but really, you should try Los Cerros - it ranks up with the best.

My wife and I were in the EDH "town center" last week and decided to try Pueblo Chica. Since its now in the dictionary I'll have to use the word 'meh'.

My wife got fish tacos and liked them, big pieces of fish. I got a combo platter of chili relleno, pork tamale and beef taco. For the taco/enchilada/tamale/rellenos/etc they let you pick your filling and sauce, so very flexible to suit.

My chili relleno was very good. The tamale was very dry and I didnt finish it. The taco looked like it was in a store bought crispy shell and the meat wasnt that tasty. The rice and beans were a bit boring. My sons cheese quesadilla was enough to feed 3 kids.

Total was $35+tip without adult beverages.

Another place with no carpet and a lot of hard surfaces, so very noisy. Thats a plus for me for family dining since my son can make a little noise without disturbing anyone. High back booths offered excellent privacy.

If I was in the town center and really wanted mexican and really didnt want to drive somewhere else, I might go again. Easily exceeded by places like La Fiesta, Chevys, etc.

Review on The Green Burrito, the fast food mexican in the Carls Jr. in Folsom:

On our first visit, they were "out of ground beef" for the taco's. I know all this stuff shows up in giant cans, but it was amusing that a place that serves hamburgers could be out of beef. On our second visit, they were flush with canned ground beef, but out of the "fresh" salsa. Again, a place that puts tomato's and onions and jalapenos on all sorts of things cant figure out how to make salsa. I know, I know...

The beef was too spicy. I eat a lot of pretty well seasoned, spicy food but their beef taco's gave me heartburn for 2 days. My son likes a spicy beef taco too but he had one bite, waved frantically for his drink and that was it. The chicken taco's we had on the day they had no beef were decent. Ho-hum rice and beans. $5.75 for 3 beef taco's, rice/beans/chips, around $7 for the same with chicken instead of beef.

My son likes running around their indoor play apparatus, but too many people bring kids that get out of control and dont do anything about it. After a couple of visits on bad weather days to let him run a little, he got run over by 10-12 year old kids with parents who seemed mystified as to why their 12 year old screaming "kung fu panda!" and kicking all the other kids was a problem.

Sooo...still in search of a place that has a decent, inexpensive lunch and a play area for kids...

I hate to trump all the opinions of the gringos, but after a year and a half in Folsom - after having grown up on Mexican food in East LA - I'd say the best, most authentic in Folsom so far is Alejandros - the new place across from the swim stadium. I have tried most of the places in Folsom. There are several that are decent. We like to go to Que Bola, Mesquite - and the place by the outlets is decent. I really liked the grilled chilles on the side of the salsa bar at the outlet place - but the carnitas were total white bread version. That is almost unforgiveable. Was disappointed at Sol Azteca and La Fiesta. Only tried El Cerro once. Never tried Felipes. Nothing top notch yet in Folsom, but try the carnitas torta or the huevos rancheros at Alejandros - both very good and authentic.
