I wouldn't want him crippled, but I would like to see him stand at the busiest intersection in town with a sample of his "art" spraypainted on his forehead and holding a sign saying, "Honk if you hate taggers." He should also have to spend a comparable amount of time doing chores for his victims to compensate them for their -- how did you put it? -- inconvenience.

Maybe its similar to the feeling or reaction parents experience to crimes against children. When you own a home, you too may understand.
As a homeowner who has an investment in the roof over my family's head and work hard to keep up its maintenance and one who believes in freedom so long as it doesnt interfere or do harm to others I detest taggers. Not too many people have extra money to repaint their house due to some dumb@ss expressing his "art". They are PIA punks that should be taught a lesson in citizenship then shown more productive activities than messing up peoples property. Maybe not cutting edge, but consider careers painting houses, murals or on a canvas. At least then they apply their talent, learn to work vs. being punks late at night.
DL - if you don't agree with the punishment from earlier posts or mine, enlighten us with what YOU feel should be done.

I agree (to some extent)... violence is not always the answer
as a home owner, I'd be pissed as hell if I caught some jerk spray painting my house, I'd likely hold him at gun point until the police came to pick him up but I wouldn't shoot him (or her)
I would however enjoy applying a huge hard smack upside the head of that dumbarse tagger, and I would demand full restitution for repairs to fix ALL the damages
.... this is what I pretty much hope happens to those dingy bimbo's that vandalized that house last week.

This is an easy position to take from the lofty view of your rented balcony...

If they do, I'm sure the recidivism rate is low.
And for those that don't know, chopping off a hand in the mideast pegs you as unclean for the rest of your life in their society, cuz the one handed person has to wipe their a$$ with the same hand they eat with, which is viewed as very unclean in their culture, despite modern soaps and TP, it still has cultural significance. (or so I have always heard, I actually tried googling to see if I could find supporting documentation, but after stumbling across video of Islamists actually cutting off people's hands, I decided I didn't need to see anymore of that and I discontinued my search)

I hate it when they don't tell us who these young punks are. I don't care if they are 14 and under age. Put the word out....

I agree with this sentiment. I think the article quoted about $10k in damages by this particular tagger.
I think the views expressed here are reflective of the general frustration we the populace feel with taggers and similar criminals. Senseless behavior that is costly to address, frequent, can be ubiquitous by area and coupled with the assumption that we have a feeling of powerlessness since enforcement against it seems to make no progress and the situation is getting progressively worse.
This mix of resultants develop the seemingly exaggerated reactions many of us are voicing of someone 'playing with paint.'
As an isolated incident of vandalism, perhaps the reaction is extreme. Taken in the context of constant and endemic blight that affects us on a daily basis coupled with the perception of worsening trends, perhaps the reaction is justified and targeted at taggers in general.
Even if tagging isn't commonplace in Folsom per se, don't believe that you aren't paying for its effects in the products you buy, insurance you pay, etc.
As with any criminal who can't respect the rights of others, they should be compelled to pay for damages and appropriately separated from society. And don't get me started on this artificial age limitation in trying criminals as children or adults.
