I'd like to drink, but I'd also like to not be the cause of fish species going into extinction! We're not the sole owners of this planet you know. I'd like to drink, but I would happily have a dead lawn to protect our fragile eco systems.

Goodness, what would you have done if they had never built the dam? The water would dry up all together in the summer. You'd have to go down to the river with a really, really big bucket of water for the fish. Before the dam was built our "river" was often a muddy creek.

Actually, Folsom has rights to some of it, pre-1913, plus the SoCal contract. Besides, if they let it all run out to the ocean nobody can use it.

its not so simple as that. if fresh water doesn't flow into the sacramento river, then salt water begans to intrude into the delta. that effects numerous species and also stops delta farmers who pump water from the river into their fields.

the american river and sacramento river were never muddy creeks, even in summer. there have been historically low snow falls in the last few decades. in the old days (like 1980s and before) there would be a huge snow pack that would keep a continuous flow in the river during summer. it was enough to keep species alive until fall rains returned.

I'm not being clear. I know that the ENTIRE flow of water can't be stopped to the American River. I just wish on dry years like these the BOR could ignore their magical flood danger date of April 9 or whatever it is and let 'er fill up.

The outflow is at its near minimum... 900 cfs.

I don't think they are near their flood reservation space right now. So its not like they are releasing water because they are surpassing their necessary flood reservation space needed at this date.

Thanks. Good to know. Do they consider modifying that in dry years?

Don't know for sure... but I would hope that they just don't follow the book... no matter what.

There are going to be a lot of brown lawns around town this summer. We'll know who isn't complying with the restrictions... they'll have the green lawns. tongue.gif

Goodness. I'm a boater and a water-skiier (well, now that I don't have a boat, I am when I can hitch a ride) but the lake isn't there for us and recreation! Call me a tree-hugger if you want, but I think a whole waterway's ecosystem is a bit more important than making sure my not-appropriate-for-our-climate-lawn is green or that I get 15 minutes in a shower twice-a-day, every-day or a slalom run.

Geesh, our culture is so self-absorbed!

We are in the process of building a huge vegetable garden with raised beds. I have no problem using water to grow healthy foods that will nourish both my family and the atmosphere. I won't be washing my car or wasting water if at all possible.

I keep large plastic containers in my kitchen and whenever I need to run the tap to get the water hot, I save the water to use for watering.

You should install an undersink instant hot water dispenser. We can do that for you!

Yeah, it would be nice to be able to go boating, but that's not what I'm worried about. I like to garden. I'm gradually reducing the amount of lawn I have and don't mind letting part of it go brown, but I want to be able to have a vegetable garden and keep my mature trees alive and I don't consider that self-absorbed. I like to keep my pond full to keep the plants and fish alive. My pond also attracts a large variety of different birds as well as the occasional squirrel for water. I like to take showers and drink water. That's why I want to see a full lake.

Which fish are you worried about? All these lakes are manmade.

About $150 for the basic model at the Lowes or Home Depot. About $80 for installation, but I hear Darthvader occassionally runs a special for less.. You will need an additional hole in your sink, like an unused soap dispenser.

Thanks
