I'm not from here, as you know. But I don't come on here and bash Sacto every chance I get. Not saying you do (just your post set me off there) but there a lot of transplants that sure (censored) a lot about how much they hate everything that isn't bay area.

I came from the edge of the bay area, and now I live on the edge of the Sacto area.
Folsom reminds me of Livermore in some ways. I hate living in real big cities, but I do like being close to take advantage of some of the things they have to offer that smaller towns won't have. I don't miss the bay area one bit. I'm closer to the Sierrras here in Folsom, but I don't live in the snow, so life is good, very good.
I would rather be Backpacking

I have such a hard time watching Brandi Hitt on KOVR13. I just can't get this image of her being the great granddaughter of Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy fame - some of you are far too young for this). Watch her and tell me if you agree.

I like KCRA for its quick, 30-minute overviews of top stories, but for detail, it's KOVR13 and Stan Laurel's great-granddaughter (although she is distracting with that Laurel chin).

Uh... Actually I was born and grew up here (well, Carmichael) and *do* remember when local radio stations had regular Sacramento news and traffic.

I just don't understand why the news has gotten smaller and less useful as the population around me has gotten much, much bigger.

So what part of Sacramento are *you* from? smile.gif

Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto is the "measured" market and it has gotten smaller... we were market 19 at one point and are now at 20

It's also frustrating to tune into the local news out of a desire to see local news only to find the local news program allocating a substantial portion of their time covering national and international news. I can watch other news programs on their networks and other networks for that coverage.

I think filling a full hour's worth of news with just local stories would require a lot more resources than stations in this market have. Most of the local stories will be around the first 5-10 min of a show and roughly 30-35 min in the show.

I am all FOX for news...

My son and I watch it in the AM...we miss Michael? was that his name?? no Even... hmmm he had brown hair..

And we liked it better when they had a main desk, and Natalie Bomke was more of a MAIN person. Seemed more organized.

Seems a little chaotic now.... like they make it up as they go.. "Hey stand in the middle of the room... and I'll stand over here, and then just read... ready, GO!"

OH, but our FAVORITE is CHP Officer Rich Wetzel!! My son was pretty young at the time, and was calling him CHP OFFICER Stitch Pretzel! I think he was my sons Idol for a few years!

Funny, I can't stand this guy. All of his sentences run together and he talks with a mush mouth -- making him hard to understand.

Yet they waste their resources by sending reporters to stand in front of buildings or crime scenes at night -- when nothing is happening and there's no one to interview... just for the sake of being there. Honestly, I don't need that to appreciate the story.

The majority of times the reporters don't have time to come back to the station as they are working on their stories up untill the last minute. Sometimes we don't get our top story untill 9:50-9:55

In fact the majority of our packages come roughly 10-20 min before the show starts. I would say this runs true for other stations and they aren't wasting their resources...we just don't have anyone to send to other stories that develop sometimes

But, the times they go just go to...stations have to deal with a double standard...go to the scene/relevent place of interest or do a live shot outside the studio and have people think you're cheap

Either way, I would say sending someone to stand out in front of a building "just to be there" is not a waste of resources becuase there would be such little time to work on a different story once they are done with their package.

I would also like to mention at the place I work I have no power/decision capabilities as to where/how/why we cover a story. I am just a peon and my comments are just my opinion =)

I wanted to throw-up when I saw a segment on Good Day Sacramento when they were in Modesto....They had a segment about people from the 'Hood and some old lady was throwing gang symbols....All of this before 9am in the morning....Nothing like watching hoodrats from Modesto in the AM...
BTW, I don't think the demographics for Gday Sac. is blue collar; I think it's no collar; think "highly" unemployed. They are the only ones home all day to catch the 4 stinking hours it's on.

I agree 100%.

I skip around the local news channels a lot. I try to watch News 10 to support our local girl Christina Mendosa.

I also enjoy Good Day Sacramento for pretty much the same reasons John cited. I'd rather have a little silliness in the morning than political blather first thing. I miss Michele Kane since she left Good Day(she was a Folsomite, too.) Even my no-collar self finds it possible to only watch a half hour or so before I drag my knuckles over and hit the off switch on the remote.

To each his or her own. I agree that some of it is stupid, but that's when it gets switched. I don't sit in rapt attention to the whole show. I more listen than watch. I just like that they are upbeat, especially Marianne McClary. I don't like the constant negativity and gloom and doom of the East Coast channels first thing in the morning.

lately I have noticed that Channel 13 has some reporters that really take a sensationalized view on the news. With the Sandra Kantu story, the reporter was almost excited about being there, videotaping the drive between her house and where body was found, interviewing people with no connection to her about her death. It was voyeuristic (sp), rather than reporting. I have also noticed that they (meaning all of the Channel 13 news folks) use the term, "You guys" way too often to be professional. They were doing it five to 10 times per news hour last year to the point where it was obvious and obnoxious. They do seem to have toned that down a little. On the upside, I get their HD signal loud and clear and they all seem cheerful, which is a plus. Love the weather guy.

Channel 10 seems most positive overall. Channel 3 seems the most professional, but I do miss Dave and Louis.

I forget which channel it was, but one of them was having teleprompter issues all night last night! It was hilarious to watch them blindly read what was written/spoken in their ear.

I think the Fox 40 News has gotten much more professional in the past three years. Five years ago, it had a hip-hop feel to it, like they were shooting for a younger demographic. It was pretty bad. Now its one of the best. Of course, I only catch the 10 pm news, but they do a great job, from local to national right down to the weather. Much improved, very professional. Love Donna Cordova and Jaime Garza, both great.

If you ever watch the news on the weekends you see a lot of that. I've seen some pretty funny things on Saturday and especially Sunday evening news.
