There's a difference between censorship and enforcing site rules. There's a difference between censoring someone's opinion and encouraging people to express those opinions without personal attacks and trolling.

I've been censored because some one thought a word I used was "too nasty" despite it not beind a cussword at all.

I've been censored for what was deemed "in poor taste" when it wasn't a personal attack at all. Even when I agreed to "censoring the one line that was meant to be funny, but a moderator didn't see it that way", my whole post was deleted and I was told to, more or less go away and shut-up.

And when I pointed out that a certain moderator violated the rules and called me an "A-hole", to the best of my knowledge, nothing was ever really done about it.

So I've come to accept the fact, the rules will never be enforced fairly.
It's up to the whim of the moderators. I try to make sure I don't post things I think will be deleted.

I even had a joke deleted for being "too vulgar", even though it didn't have vulgar words, just vulgar thoughts, yet many a moderator has used "modified" words to cuss on the forum which is just as vulgar or more so. (like my use of the A-word above or using Eff for the F-word, etc...)
I would rather be Backpacking

he is one of the most level headed, FAIR, and thought provoking people that I know. I may not agree with him 100% of the time, but I respect the heck out of him.

You've got the right attitude about rules being enforced fairly, this is no different than everyday life. I feel you add value even when we disagree.

I agree. I hope these changes encourage more people (including me) to be more active on the forum again.

Well, in my humble opinion, I think that the negativity is started when a poster is allowed to say things that are offensive, and nothing is done by the Moderators. It seems to escalate into a brawl, of sorts and one wonders why it isn't stopped before it becomes a mess.

Things should be nipped in the bud, so the speak and then they wouldn't get out of hand. One example I can think of that recently happened is when a poster was allowed to open a thread for the sheer purpose of bashing another poster. That certainly wasn't anything that added positive content to the forum, and it was allowed to go on for too long.

I think a good way to post is to criticize the idea or opinion, not the poster posting it. Although this has been said many times before, it seems to get lost on many.

And then there are those who post with only one purpose....to support their party's ideals.
I don't have a party, so can't relate to those posters. But I also can't relate to football fans that argue over why the other team is bad and theirs is great.

Guess I'm just not a TEAM player. unsure.gif

Seriously folks, this forum is very tame compared the rest of the wild Web. Check out the comments on Sacbee or even Fark - the Internet encourages cruelty.

I agree. I have seen forums were the rules are stricter with everyone signing each post with their name as to curb negative behavior.

Has anyone seen comments on youtube and such? Those can be really bad.

+100.
By praising these new steps, some people have bashed the moderators for not doing enough or putting a stop to something sooner.
Lets NOT get too carried away singing Koombayah and its a wonderful world as we try to sanitize this and steer this ship wayyyy to much to the other side. The root word of a moderator = moderation.

Thanks puppylover and palango, but I don't have much in the way of political aspirations.

I think you have to make too many compromises and you end up with 49% of the population hating you, or at least, accusing you of being incompetent.

There's the reason right there why you won't make it in politics. Your combination of smarts, common sense, and ethics will hurt your chances.

Endless cycle......

This kind of stuff happens in all 'net forums. You think it gets bad around here, you should read some of the stuff posted on trumpet player forums. We get posters who bash everybody, get personal, crazy and then when they get banned, they appear again under a different name a week later. They try to fit in at first, but after awhile they can't help themselves and self-destruct again.

It's nice to be nice. rolleyes.gif

Great forum, thanks for helping to make it readable. Give yourself a raise.

I'm on a rampage to clean up some of the negativity on this site. Undoubtably, I will anger some posters, even regulars. However, I hope it will beneficial in the long run.

In the past, if you haven't broken a forum rule I personally let it slide. Now, if you post something that's not beneficial to the site or the community, please expect it to be edited or deleted entirely. You can also expect a PM from me explaining why I did so.

If you have a problem/complaint with me, please take it up with John or STD.

If you have been lurking, afraid to post because of fear of the stupid backlash, please take this opportunity to make yourself heard.

Please note that I do not read every post and will not catch everything, but I hope to at least make a little impact before I get booted wink.gif
