Yes, I was being sarcastic.
The USA, sadly, doesn't have the best health care system.

What brought me to this topic is I actually knew the girl (Beth) who died.
I was following her status in the hospital via her facebook when she first got sick (her roommate was updating her page).
It was very sad/scary that she was in UC Davis because I too have heard horror stories.

This was an update BEFORE she was actually dianosed with the swine flu...
"was moved to the ICU yesterday. They have her on a temporary ventilator and have her knocked out. She's not doing very well right now. We're all waiting for her to turn around. She's in the UC Davis Medical Center."

Then another after the diagnoses...

"Beth's taken a dip, her stats have lowers, her blood pressure has risen, and her kidneys are having some problems because of so much antibiotics running through her system. "

Then one of the final updates...

"Outlook is bleak. She's on an ECMO which is oxygenating her blood for her, still on the ventilator, she's on dialysis now because her kidneys aren't working. Doctors are giving her about a 5-10% chance of pulling through."

So sad. sad.gif

Maybe you can put to rest the statements about her having some under lying health issues.

What is the real story about that? Did she actually have some other health issues when she got the Swine Flu?

If she was a friend of yours, I'm so sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences. sad.gif

Thank you.

According to what I heard she got sick while on a trip to Las Vegas in early June and her health deteriorated from there.
All I have read indicates that it's just like any other flu except this is a horrible, horrible version of it.

I am so sorry about Beth. She was a very pretty young women with alot of life ahead of her.
It is so hard to put in perspective, why her, why this? I just wonder if she had been sick for any amount of time or it was just the way the virus hit. It is funny that no one around her contracted it either. Maybe they were treated. Anyway, you are right and we do have horrible care in California. I was just in the hospital myself 1 month ago with pneumonia due to a virus that hit me. I have never had pneumonia and it hit me so fast I could not even think. I am 58 , but do have a history of severe asthma. They have no idea how I got it or where. I asked Mercy to test me for swine since I had 102 temp, trouble breathing etc. They would not do it. It took me a month to get out of it and they gave me the strongest antibiotics possible and what kicked it was Zithromax. I had to take for 10 days straight,at a higher than normal dose. All I can say, it was not my time, I guess. I remember when I was at Mercy Folsom thinking, this could really kill someone if you were not strong. Sorry, just wanted to give you a background and I am truly sorry for the death of your freind. Her mom
keeps saying to wash your hands. thats all I do. Thanks for sharing with us I know it was probably very hard for you.

Shhhhhhh!!! No negative info on this forum! This site is for Pollyannas only.

And in case you didn't hear... the economy has recovered, health care is fixed, social security is solvent, everyone's marriages (straight and gay) are happy... and Folsom has found a way to make dog poop vanish instantly! What a wonderful world!!!

You are very rude and offensive. I do not know you and I hope I never do. You obviously a person with some issues that have to be dealt with. This forum has some troublemakers for sure. Your are right up there with the others that have been kicked off the forum. Try tommorro to have a better day and be more positive.

???????

At least I can hear two sides of an issue without feeling threatened.

Some of us didn't realize (until it was too late) that only ONE side was welcome in this thread.

Wreathlady,

I am sorry if my posts offended you. I enjoy a spirited exchange of ideas... and I'll admit, I can tend to be a person who is always saying, "But what about...??!" I also tend to be a worrier about things like swine flu!

My last post was meant in good fun -- intended to (gently) tease those who (unlike me!) always look on the bright side of everything.

I don't think I can promise to turn into an optimist for you... but please accept my assurance that I did not intend to hurt your feelings.

Thank you for the apology. I do not like confrontation. It is just not worth it.

Yes, one child had a mild case of it. He was in Mexico and attended the private Fair Oaks school. He live in ARC and the doctor who treated him is my daughter's pediatrician.
I wasn't surprised when the woman died at UCD..It's the most filithiest hospital I have seen....It's mostly ran by students with a head doctor that reviews the cases. In addition, many of these residents are some of the most unskilled students I have seen when they took care of my father. They were incompetent and he never did get to see a neurologist after a stroke...Instead, he got a resident who relayed the info from the neurologist who was probably playing a round of golf...PEOPLE SWEAR by UCD...I SWEAR AGAINST IT....I mean the hospital, not the clinics....It is run haphazardly and they have the worst continuity in care I have ever seen in a hospital..How do you know she didn't get an infection in the hospital besides the flu? That happened to my dad and if I hadn't noticed the degrading of his condition he would have died from a secondary condition....

It is unfortunate that you've had such a bad experience in regards to your father...but it could have happened at any hospital.

Mercy Folsom ER Department flat out refused to admit me (on two seperate occassions 5 hours apart) in 2007. When I was finally admitted 24 hours later by my surgeon, I had severe cellulitius of the foot, ankle and leg from a subcutaneous post-operative infection. I was told if I hadn't gotten admitted when I did, I would have died the next day...when they took me back to the operating room to clean out the infection, my surgeon was on the fence whether or not to amputate my foot...thankfully he gave me the fighting chance, and let me keep my foot. It took almost a year for my foot to heal well enough to be able to go back to work. I still have problems with it swelling and I have to have cortisone injections...but at least I have my foot.

Neither ER doctor wanted to take on the responsibility of admitting me, even though I was clearly in need of emergency medical attention. When my Surgeon saw my foot after leaving the ER for the second time, he became white as a ghost...he knew I was in bad shape through no fault of my own.

As far as UCD Med Center goes, INHO, both my step parents go there for treatments for a brain tumor and Chrone's....both get excellent care by the residents and the doctors...so again, each hospital has it's miracle stories along with it's horror stories.

Hi Boardercolliefan!

Your last post made me laugh because it reminds me of my husband - it's something he'd write also...not out of spite or malice...but just to try to lighten the mood of everyone. I am the optimist in our relationship and he is the pessimist (or as I like to call him, a 'realist')...it works for us.

Anyway, I wanted you to know that I understood the meaning behind your post, even if others didn't.

Does anyone know if Foslom or EDH has seen alot of influenza type symptoms? Has anyone been really sick on this forum lately.
I am very scared due to the death of a healthy young women in Sacramento and a 53 old with no history either who died.

Need some reassurance.
Thanks

I caught it in March of this year - my friends from New York imported it. Evidently the rate is/has been higher on the East Coast.

It started off with relatively minor symptoms and then BAM - fever and chills for 5 days, terrible sore throat, chest congestion, weakness, etc. I was hammered for two weeks.

BTW - I'm 52 and in good shape.

I think I'll hole up at home all of fall and winter this year. Some authorities say the Swine Flu will make a come back then, and with a vengeance.

I hope they are wrong, but have a feeling they aren't. Let's all hope for the best....that's about all we can do, besides the usual washing of hands and maybe wearing some masks....gloves?

This is very scary and I guess we have to see what happens. Why the government does not do anything about animals and testing is beyond me. But now we have a huge problem, so I guess we will see who makes it thru this horrible chain of events.

I'm more afraid of a hastily produced vaccine for this thing. The one in 1976's versions of the Swine Flu ended up causing more problems than it solved.

Good luck for all the Folsom People here. If the swine flu does come back, Folsom ER cannot handle it. They can barely handle anything. I had a perforated colon and it took 3 hrs for them to see me. Luckily I made it, but I went in right away, if I had not, and if it had not been for a great ER MD who finally saw me and a great Surgeon, Craig Thayer, I would not be here. I think Mercy has a great facility, but too overwhelmed with the population here.
