I've been jumping off Rainbow Bridge and China wall since I was in 4th grade (19yrs ago). It was safer to jump off China Wall before they put up fencing along the easiest section. Before the fence was put up, you had to full-sprint from about 60 feet back, or else you risk hitting the wall on the way down. It's about a 70* slope and 40ft high. Now you have to jump from the side of the fence at a more dangerous less-steeply sloped section. Putting up a warning with names of those injured/killed may deter quite a few that question their own athletic ability to make this jump (not to say that this kid would be in that category). It will also embolden other thrill seekers looking to impress. The fence should be taken down on the premise that people will continue to find places to jump off, but will be forced to try at more dangerous locations along the river. The fence will stay up along the safest section because we live in a state where more lawsuits are filed for personal gain than the other 49 states combined. If the city takes it down, some leftist lawyer will definitely see dollar signs next time someone gets hurt, if not now.

In 2001, I went SCUBA diving at the section where there's now a fence. Below the waterline, it's nearly vertical drop down to roughly 37 feet. There was a white Toyota Tacoma with Nevada plates upside down at the bottom. Not sure if it's there anymore. It's highly doubtful he hit any submerged debris, as you rarely sink more than 10-12 feet, in my experience.

I'm told they cleaned out the bottom a couple of years ago. No corroboration though.

I think the idea of a nice stark monument is a pretty good one.

Maybe if you are knocked out or rupture your spleen or break your back you could have a different experience.

Well said. I really do think the memorial is a good idea, how do we petetion the city for something like that? Im sure a fund raiser could be started and we can do this right and proper. Have any of you seen that big rock that is up at city park with the names of the folsom citizens who died in war on it? Maybe something like that, heck if we wanted we could even have it blocking the only accessable area to jump.

The city is broke. We can't afford a monument. Especially one that needs to be altered every year or two.

I think the property where the memorial would be located is State Parks and out of City of Folsom jurisdiction. They would probably be the ones to approach regarding a memorial. Perhaps if enough people feel strongly enough they would be willing to do some fund raising and a plaque could be purchased from private donation.

I think this is a wonderful idea, however, based on the vandalism done to the plaque commemorating BT Collin's park, my fear is the plaque would be pried off it's granite or concrete slab and chucked into the lake.

I agree - anything manmade is not likely to last. Perhaps a row of large boulders along the rim of the cliff, with poison oak growing over them, would be a deterrant. At least it would prevent anyone getting a running start. Cheap, too - we have lots of rocks around here.

Probably easier to fill in the bottom than cut down the top.

You could leave a few of these things in the way.

no more memorials. then it becomes a wierd site where people leave flowers and other debris. State Parks does not put up memorials anywhere in their parks for this reason. It should be a warning sign saying that people have died jumping from this location and it is a hazard.

I agree, keep it simple and cheap, so when it is vandalized. it's still cheap and easy to repair/replace

I only posted that video so parents would think about talking to their kids.
My older two children only told us they had done this very recently. They're both in their twenties now.

My heart goes out to the family of the young man.

well said.

Of course it is. Classic victim is to blame thought process...

She got raped because of the way she dressed...
His car got stolen because he didn't lock it...
That person is poor because of poor choices...
That kid died jumping off the cliff because he was too fat...

Edit: And as far as the "Its ok though the kids death gave me 900 hits so im not complaining," Don't we also teach to always look for the silver lining????

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying this is what we teach, whether we know it or not.

How about a boulder and since teens visit there, just let them grafitti it....they can write on the rock and it's free.....maybe just put a simple plaque and the rock to write whatever teens write nowadays.....probably not many nice things I'm sure......smile.gif
