I say do whatever that sells. Its Capitalism John and this is NOT a .org/free service site.

If the politics was getting heated and was on the border to lose or not gain any new advertisers, then get rid of it permanently!!!!

I can't say I saw negativity or rudeness... but I guess others did. My bigger concern was just the daily volume spewing from a few chronic posters.

I haven't been around much this year on the site, but that's what I remember, too.

Is there a feature that lets you not see the posts of certain posters? Then again, that would exclude the good stuff along with the "spewing".

It would be interesting to know how much traffic is lost because the political thread exists vs. how much will be lost if it gets removed. There's probably no clear way to tell.

Bill Z's analysis is pretty much spot on.

This is a great website which I have put a lot of time and effort in to. It's something I'm pretty proud of. I want other people in Folsom to be proud of it as well. When the site is associated with petty personal attacks and endless diatribes from particular posters, it's no longer something that I envisioned when I created this site.

It was a tough decision - I removed a lot of content. And content = money. I had to remove this in an effort to win some people back and bring some fun back in to the forums.

Keep in mind gang, it's one forum - and it will be back. We just need to cool our jets for a bit and get back to the basics.

There is a way. Go to My Controls, then down on the left-hand side to Options, and then Manage Ignore Users and you can add names. Only problem is if someone else quotes them in their reply you will still see the post. Even so, I found it saved a lot of time on certain posters.

In addition to what Ducky said, there has always been the option of PMing John and asking for the No Politics filter for your account. Several including myself have this and life is good.

as a member first and a moderator second, I just ask that when the forum comes back to take personal responsibility for yourself and your actions and not expect others (moderators) to fix things. Let's not break them in the first place. This isn't the result of any moderator's shortcomings, it's the result of individual people's actions.

Its a new day, let's use the opportunity well.

Well, for those of you who don't like the decision, www.folsompolitics.com is available. As is .net, .org, .info, .biz....

You get the idea.

If you've got the time and gumption to put into moderating the volatility of a politics forum, you could help John out by starting your own site?

http://www.politicalforum.com/

For all your inane political rants that are completely unrelated to Folsom.

Enjoy.

Right, but a few are complaining that it's too global... they want to know what their neighbors here in Folsom think. Hence, my suggestion.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING MY GIRL.

From what I saw of the political forum, before I started boycotting it, was that the worst offenders didn't really seem to care what their neighbours thought. They violently disagreed with them, instead. Perhaps it's best, for those people, to find lively conversation with those that agree with you. Instead of wrapping up an entire community in your trite bickering.

Good call. I enjoy a little political debate once in a while, but that thing was getting ridiculous. I quickly tire of closed-minded people that just want to regurgitate crap from their favorite talking head rather than actually discuss/debate with real thought.

When I first joined MyFolsom, those discussions were usually more civilized and interesting. Looking back, most of the people in the discussions were also people that would actually come to the events and meet each other. So it was more like friendly debate over a couple of beers, not a rhetoric battle of the witless. We could get into a heated debate online, then meet for drinks and pizza the following week and it was no big deal. I doubt many of the recent offenders could do the same.

Maybe have a couple qualifications for accessing the political forum:
  1. Provide an example of at least one topic where you actually changed your mind after some healthy conversation.
  2. Only people that have participated in MyFolsom gatherings (formal or informal, like the MNF group) have access. Miscellaneous interweb tube dwellers not welcome.

I agree with RichT. There is only so much that can be said about barking dogs, pooping dogs, and what restaurant makes the best burritos. It's good for all of us to broaden our perspectives and think about issues of nation-wide and worldwide significance.

If you think "events of worldwide significance" are more relevant to your everyday life than burritos and dog poop, and any less boring and repetitive, then I respectfully suggest you reconsider. The real difference for the sake of the forum is that no one will call you a x-baiting y-loving son of a z over a burrito.

Yeah, plus we all know that La Fiesta has the best burritos.

Right on the money Ken - well said! I guess we've learned that anonymity can sometimes bring out the worse in some people.
