No, a 42" TV is just fine for watching TV. But this movie isn't "TV", it's not even really a movie, it's a visual experience.

that's exactly what I thought too after seeing it today, this is not your typical movie to wait and watch at home, its got to be seen on the big screen in 3D with big sound.

While I'm sure this is the case, the commercials and trailer should at least make me want to go see it on a giant screen. They failed doing that for me.
And Bill, since apple software is so scary, you can watch the trailer on you tube if you want. Maybe it will appeal to you.

I've heard EDH is the smaller "fake" IMAX.

Agreed. I was never really thrilled with the whole 3D thing until this movie. It's the best way to appreciate all the effects.

Plus, the previews will fail to bring people to the theater. It is absolutly impossible to do this movie justice without seeing it in 3D. Its the sole purpose of the movie, story line, everything. When you actually watch this movie in 3D you instantly become a spectator in the world of Pandora and you won't want to leave that planet. Whether your a sci-fi junkie or person who hates them like my mom... this movie just works for everybody.
Anybody who waits for a DVD release of this film will never see it how its meant to be. I have a 65 inch widescreen with a killer surround sound system and I can assure you that I'll be disappointed when I'm forced to watch it on that. I agree with other films including some of my favorite action movies can be watched on a big screen tv but this one is built for the theater and 3D projection systems.

They are also showing it in "RealD". That's how I saw it. It was good... by which I mean it had no bad effect. I didn't leave with a headache. I don't know if it necessarily added anything to the move. I think the digital projectors probably have more of an effect. The candy colors of the jungle work really well and might not look as good from a film projection... the same way sports look far better on digital TV because of all the bright contrasting colors, while an old black and white movie looks better in analog because of the smooth shades.
They are also showing it flat. Three options in one theater, hoo

I think the only reason they have a 2D version is for people who can't see in both eyes etc making it impossible to see the 3D.

In case I wasn't clear, they are showing two different 3D versions at EDH. One is IMAX and the other is RealD. And third, they are showing it flat.
The IMAX glasses had yellow plastic frames. Beyond that I know nothing about it - including whether it's "mini". The IMAX theater is on the right hall.
We went left. Our theater was definitely using RealD. I could tell because of the dozens of RealD logos all over everything. The RealD glasses had black plastic frames. We played around with the glasses and found that the left lens would totally black out the right, so it's still working on polarization. But rotating the lenses made no difference so it's not vertical/horizontal polarization. Unless we were doing it wrong, which is possible.
The IMAX one would have cost a few bucks more. It was sold out when we arrived and there was a RealD show 20 minutes later. That was the only reason we wound up in one and not the other.

I have no doubt that this is the biggest VFX movie so far. But I am waiting for a big VFX movie that will interest me, even if it takes a few more years. I would only watch it on DVD because I was friendly with someone in it. I try to watch his movies (but not in the theatre).
