Newspapers seem like they are going out anyways aren't they?
I don't know... Maybe thats you and everybody else's preference which is great but it just seems like it doesn't fit in well as the "6.0" to be listed here:

Anyways, just curious of the logic behind the design decision, not trying to knock it.

PS - newspapers are only going away because people get their news faster online. It has very little to do with formatting.

Just to throw in my 2 cents on this subject, I personally like Folsom being thought of as a historical town with a modern side (not vice versa). Modern towns - anywhere U.S.A., are a dime a dozen, we have significant historical history here which I think sets us apart and I think its good to reflect that in some parts of the website.
I'm just not always into the shiny and new look 24/7, it bores the heck out of me, the history here is what makes this town unique.

huh? not sure its looking web 2.0 at all
Newspapers were formated that way they were because of technology limitations and very limited design. Thats why it seems matching for historical sites to design as such but not even historical famous newspaper websites design that way. They just keep their logo...
Well, you can think of it that way but thats not how it is if you look around. 90% of our city is modern. Far more modern then most. Sure we have a little historical area and plenty of history but we aren't exactly Coloma, Columbia, Angels Camp, etc that are mostly historical towns.
History making this town unique is an attraction to some I agree. But we have a large population and I'm guessing a very small percentage could care less about the historical side. It makes for great banner images and links to the history of the town but to design that way just seems unmatching and can even cause the younger crowd to look elsewhere when I thought the idea is to get even more members and more advertisers based on that. (wow, what a run-on)
Anyways... hopefully the newspaper look works for everyone else : )

no offense, but now you're just being anal. this town didn't start off being known for the shopping malls and whatever else it is you think is "far more modern then most" and all about young people. you may not care at all about history here, but many others do, perhaps far more then you have realized outside of your circle

As for Web 2.0 stuff, it's more about having a clean layout. Right now our layout just looks a little outdated, that's all.

I never said it didn't "start off" being known for history. But folsom currently is more like small modern city with some historical counter parts. I'm not bagging on the history. I love the history and have lived in the area my entire life.
BUT, most people have not lived here their entire lives and moved here because of intel, aerojet, etc, etc. Alot are bay area folks just trying to get out of there and into a nicer area while still having their favorite conveniences.
There is young, old, rich and poor here. I never said folsom is all about young people... I just said there is a balance in design that could attack young as well as old. Being old historical newspaper'ish seems less appealing to younger people and can alienate some. I doubt if a non-newspaper design is going to alienate older folks.
And "anal"... no need to call named DUDE. John posted a thread offering kings tickets for critique on the new thread so I'm giving mine. Doesn't mean they are right or wrong, just that they are what I feel and I'm stating them because they were asked for. Period. So start your own thread if you want to start calling other people opinions on the subject as "anal".

The history is a very important part of Folsom in my opinion. Folsom to me is Sutter Street, not the Palladio. I could go to Roseville if I wanted boring shopping mall. I think a site representing our town should reflect that. As for losing the "young people", my almost 13 year old would vastly prefer something historical/older looking to flashy/modern looking.
BTW, not all of us think newspapers are passé, even those of us who rely on very modern technology for most things.

I think there is slightly more too it then you think. Modern designs are very much a part of web 2.0 from my experience.
Thanks for the clarification on newspaper look John. I think I understand what your talking about more now...

What difference does that make? I live here now and intend to live here for a considerable time.
