I hope the city isn't planning on moving their softball leagues to this monstrosity. BLD charges spectators and players $3.00 to enter the complex. You get a $1.00 token that can be used at the concession stand or batting cage. League fees are double what the city currently charges.

Very unlikely Professor....the cost for a team to play one tournament at a BLD facility is roughly equivalent to the cost to play an entire season in the Parks & Rec league. Those games will stay at Lembi.

While it may appear that we have lots of fields for sports, I can tell you that is not the case from my perspective. I am on the board of Folsom Lacrosse. Lacrosse is turning into a very popular sport here in the Sacramento region and our club is growing quickly. The problem is we have more teams, than fields available. Trust me when I say there is a ranking of which sports get fields easily and which don't. Not only are there different clubs/teams vying for the fields, Folsom takes fields out of service to "rehab" them, leaving less fields than it looks.

I would be interested in hearing more about the project, and how it might benefit the shortage of fields.

M.E.G.

Good point Mechelle, our sports programs are growing fast and our facilities cannot keep pace.....there is still some confusion about the BLD target market from many of the posts on this topic. This facility is not intended to support Folsom youth sports leagues. In fact, the overwhelming majority of kids that will play on these fields will not be Folsom residents. The city fields support the two Little Leagues in Folsom, as well as our other youth sports leagues (soccer, lacrosse, etc.). There is a growing number of youth travel baseball teams (hundreds in NoCal alone)that are not governed by Little League and participate in tournaments all over the State/country. As a past board member for the Folsom Baseball Club, I was active in the introduction of travel baseball into Folsom. We had teams travel as far as Omaha for tournaments. This is the market that the BLD facility will attract. Folsom has a handful of travel baseball teams (Flames, Thunder), but most of the clientele at a Folsom BLD facility would come from somewhere else. This project is not intended to relieve the pressure on our existing city-maintained fields. BLD has a unique business model and there is demand. These facilities are sold out year-round in most cases, and since these fields are primarily artificial turf, they can support year-round baseball in our mostly mild (except lately) climate.....should be interesting!

A Big League Dreams facility would be nice, but “$450,000” is way too much for just a license. I would like to see the city build facilities that resemble Clarks Field in Woodland, James Field in Auburn and/or Galt Community Park in Galt. These facilities are great for youth programs, attract tournaments, and have a "uniqueness" about them. If the City was smart about it they should design “Folsom’s version” of a Big League Dreams facility without the licensing.

James Field – Auburn

Galt Community Park

I believe you meant THIS place in Woodland?

or the one in Ripon Here

or even Mather Regional Park HERE!

Each of these facilities are booked every weekend with travel and softball tournaments year round and are owned and operated by the P&R dept of the communities they are built in.

These are three examples of great facilities that are maintained by their respective cities....in our case, the issue would be who would pick up the tab to build a facility comparable to these in Folsom. In the case of Woodland, there was a large influx of private money from a certain MLB player and former Woodland resident. I'm not sure if we have that same luxury, but I personally would prefer a Mather style facility to a BLD.

If S50 is developed, then Parks/facilities and trails, should be paid for with impact fees from new development. Its crucial that council adopt impact fees that pay for what is needed there.

I wouldn't be supportive of impact fees being used to build a BLD.

I am currently the president of the Folsom Baseball Club and like luvmycity have spent many weekends over the past four years down in Manteca at the BLD there. Luvmycity is correct in all his assertions, this venue would hold tournaments for youth travel baseball teams. The facility in Manteca is outstanding and is likely the favorite of most, if not all, Flames players. It attracts hundreds of players from Northern and Central California (as well as Reno area teams) and their families every weekend of the year, many who stay one to two nights at local hotels and frequent the local restaurants. Not only has travel ball become mainstream it is exploding with the number of participants. I feel strongly that it will be an economic boom for Folsom. As a Folsom resident and taxpayer I wholeheartedly endorse it.

I have taken my son to several tournaments at BLD facilities....I think its important for everybody who is considering supporting this project to take a hard look. The facility in Manteca is falling a part. It takes a LOT of money to keep this thing going. We should save the money and build a facility like Mather field.

Interesting how this materialized between the second Tuesday of November and December 6th.

Just curious what's happening with this and where it's happening.
All I could find was a $450,000 loan from redevelopment fees done in January 2011 and then in December 2011 a meeting in closed session having something to do with property at Lembi.

Anybody know if there's any plans that can be viewed or have more info?

Check with one of the city council members.

They all have their email addresses under their area.

Thanks, camay.
You should know by now I am very aware of how to contact council members. I've had good results with that and some not so much.
I also can look up minutes from meetings.

Sometimes it's just quicker to tap into the helpful and knowledgeable posters here.(4thgen and Tony come to mind.)

I also thought it would bring out some discussion and opinions.

I watch most of the city council meetings on TV after the fact and remember them
talking about this but don't know what the outcome was. Are they really coming
here or not??

I used to contact some different Council members seeking out answers, after a while I got tired of being misled and used, so I quit talking to most about city issues. If any of them have a worthy cause and need help, they know they can count on me.

All one has to do is go look at the history of the blantant misleading that went on here. I for one am grateful that its stopped!

If I had to make my best guess about this, I'd lean towards the City may be exploring options of privatizing some of these facilities as a way of reducing staff expenses. It seems like a logical option to explore given the citys financial challenges. I don't know if I'd agree with doing this or not, but exploring it as an option would be the prudent thing for the Council to pursue.

My question would be what will happen with the $450,000 if it gets returned to the City, now that the RDA is sorta on hiatus?
