Outside of Japan, I've never had a steak in a restaurant that I couldn't cook just as well at home, including the ultra-expensive Cut in Vegas (disclaimer -- since I learned to cook; when I was younger, I was completely dependent upon restaurants for well cooked food). :)

That being said, there are other reasons to eat at steak / rib places -- Bone Daddy's in Texas comes immediately to mind (hint - it ain't all about the food). :)

I rarely eat steak anymore, though I've had my "phases" when I do. Best I've ever had were in Buenos Aires (in restaurants) and in Iowa (from the store). Better than Texas, I thought. I don't remember having steak in Japan.

Plus I have to admit, I'm not big into beef so steaks are not on my home menu very often, not because of cost, but just because it's not something I like to eat very often. Salmon, Ahi, Halibut and whole chickens are always in my fridge and on the menu weekly.

Same here. That's my preferred menu as well (except I get chicken breasts, not whole chickens).

Fully agree, I've never been to any place that can make steak better then I can at home, that's why I have a very hard time paying big bucks for someone to cook it for me for 5x's the price of just buying it and cooking it myself.

But then again, it's nice sometimes not having to deal with prep, cook and cleanup....

Any recommendations on where you get the Salmon, Ahi, & Halibut?

The Nugget has a good selection and I recently discovered the Sacramento Farmers Market has outstanding selections.

Went last night. It's great to have a joint like this in our hood. Folks at the front were very friendly - as they told us about an hour wait. No worries, we expected that and wanted to check out the bar anyway. The place was absolutely packed and hopping. What recession? Wife and I both order martinis and within a few minutes were able to find seats at the bar. Good cocktail with blue cheese stuffed olives. I can definitely see just coming down for a cocktail and app at this very nice bar. After about 30 min, just as we were finishing our drinks, our table became available. We got a nice table up top. I guess the dining tables all around the bar are first come first served - but its a little crazy in there, so we were glad to get a table up top. Waiter was very prompt and nice - even though all were very busy. I like the menu - simple but good selections - with wine list on back. Started with oysters and a wedge. The oysters were not chilled - almost room temp. Wedge was OK, but needed more dressing and fixins. I ordered the center cut ribeye and the wife ordered a Mexican albacore fish special. My steak was awesome. Had never heard of a "center cut" ribeye - as it turns out - seemed like a nice filet to me. It was cooked to perfection and very tasty. Came with au gratin potates, which were also great - but need salt/spice. Wife's dish was creative and good - but the fish was overcooked - almost dry. Ordered a side of grilled asparagas to share - which were good - but only comes with 6 medium sized spears. I guess you really only need 3 or 4 - but seemed sparse.

Overall a good, not yet great, experience. All the staff were very friendly and competent. Being very new and extremely busy, we cut them a little slack on this visit. Look forward to more dinners at this very nice ER neighborhood place.

What was the noise level like? Could you go there with a group of say eight and be able to hear one another from one end of the table to the other?

Pretty loud in and around the bar. From where we sat it was fine - about as far away as you can get from the bar. A tabel nearer the bar could be pretty loud.

Took the wifey Saturday night ~6PM for our anniversary and had a great dinner. The restaurant was full (bar not so much) the whole time we were there. Food was great, I had the Ribeye and wife had steak and lobster. Service was top notch. We'll definately be back however I suspect only on those special ocassions. $$$

Do they have a surf and turf option now? We went soon after they opened and I was surprised that it wasn't on the menu.

I went last night with my brother & his wife. It was very good. We got there at 5, before the crowds arrived & sat in the bar. The bread was fresh out of the oven & was delicious. I had a side salad & the NY strip was cooked to perfection. It melted in my mouth. The peppercorn sauce was flavorful. I had the delicious au gratin potatoes. My brother had the salmon & macademia rice pilaf. He was very pleased with his choice. My sister-in-law had the giant prawns, which were good, but she wasn't as pleased with her potato dish. Overall, the food & service were excellent.

We hit Land Ocean Friday evening for Happy Hour. I was very happy. They had a great selection of food and drink on the Happy Hour menu. I got a great glass of Pinot Noir for $6.50, all beers were $4 and they had a great selection of micro beers and great food for $2-$5. We had the prawns ($2/ea), blue cheese dip ($3), cheese bread ($3), Egg rolls ($5), chicken, pork and beef sliders (the beef was the best) ($3/ea) and beef wellington ($3) - all of which were very good.

The food cam out timely, despite a packed restaurant. The bartenders were doing their best, but it was pretty busy and they fell behind a bit. Sometimes you had to flag them down to order. Once it calmed down closer to 9, they were able to start being more attentive.

The atsmosphere was nice - quiet, understated elegance. The only thing I didn't like was the big picture of the cow. I don't like to be reminded about what I'm eating. But that's just the softie in me speaking.

I didn't get a chance to look all that well at the regular menu, but it seemed to be fairly priced and had a good variety. The place was packed, so it appears to be doing well.

All in all, I will back, this might be a new favorite for us for an affordable evening out. Or a quick bite before the movies.

They've been a hit for me and Mrs. H, with good food and friendly service, and they've let us use their patio as a fund raiser for a local charity.
