Its such a shame that the news wasnt very accurate about portraying the devastation that happened in this drunk driving accident, they reported that the worst injury was a broken arm. However, I know someone who was injured. A young El Dorado Hills girl who was to start nursing school in two weeks, was struck by the driver who crashed into the patio area. Her L-L-12 back/vertabra is broken and both her feet. She is expected to recover but will be in a body cast.
My sympathies to your friend. The news does down play any injury that is not considered "life threatening", but sometimes the injury can lead to infection, which causes death or complications which alter the quality of life or the ability to work. People often think being alive is all about being able to breath, but it is so much more to many of us. We want to thrive, not just exist.
Foot injuries are touchy to heal. I know because I had a slight foot injury once and even though I broke no bones, my foot still hurts now and then. According to the doctor, the ligaments often heal but are never the same. Sometimes several surgeries are needed and then there is no guarantee the injured foot will be like before. My doctor says the foot is a very complicated area of the body, with so many small bones and ligaments.
I've had a back injury too, which is another tricky thing to be injured. My back has never been the same and others who have had back surgeries tell me they weren't worth it. Their backs still hurt and there is no easy and 100% fix. I pamper my back and often use heat packs sold in the store, to get over periods of pain from just moving the wrong way or over doing.
My best friend was a nurse for years. Nursing takes many long hours on your feet, a strong back to lift patients and requires lots of bending and stooping. Your friends injuries could well keep her from that goal. Rather than try to continue down that path, she may want to reconsider her goals towards a profession that wouldn't require so much from her body.
Doctors will tell her she will be all well with no problems, if they want to do surgery, but she should look into the results of any surgery as well as her long term condition before deciding what's in her future. Scar tissue and other problems sometimes last a life time.
Again, I'm very sorry to hear this about your friend and wish her all the luck.....what a shame. (Hubby and I now sit far from the front windows of any place we dine, if there is parking there.)
