There is a 19 year old that graduated from Folsom that passed away that night, but it is unclear if he died in this accident, or from some other cause.

There was a moment of silence at the Cross Town Cup soccer game Sat night but no other info was given. A friend of mine said a 19 yr old died from a heroin over-dose.

Either way there are too many kids dying these days.

Was the Honda driver a teacher or intel employee? It was noted above that he was a teacher...?

The driver of the Honda was an Intel employee

The Sacramento Bee identified the driver of the Honda as Steven Schwartz, 28, of Orangevale.

He possibly was a teacher until 2009 and then joined Intel so both are correct.

In any case, what a terrible loss for his family, friends, and coworkers.

Absolutely, I just wasn't sure why people were referring to a 19 year old, and if anyone had confirmation of this.

This is the fourth deadly head-on crash in Folsom in 2012.

Jan - three fatalities by DUI wrong-way driver on Highway 50 near the Folsom Blvd. off-ramp. (Driver that was killed was also a designated driver)

The driver of the SUV was a local 49 year old man and a friend of many, including me. He was a good guy. I know nothing of the circumstances that lead to him apparently speeding, apparently with lights off, and apparently losing control. My sadness will become anger if it is determined terrible decisions caused this tragedy. My heart goes out to his friends and family, and even more so to the Schwartz family, as Steven's death is even more tragic and unfair.

You know, from seeing the pics of that accident I know exactly where that happened. When I first drove on that road I was surprised that it was not divided in the middle with the cement three foot high or so divider..... Might not have saved everyone in this case but could have taken some energy out of the offending vehicle as to not kill someone in the opposite lanes. .... Unfortunately it will take a few more of these fatal accidents before we get a center divider there.

Chris, there have been a lot of of these "cross-over killer crashes" in this city with no City Engineer since Bob Blaser was fired. While Bob was in charge, the speed limits were reasonable, and all the medians were appropriate for safety.

Recently the city took control of Public Works Department away from a CA licensed civil engineer as well.

They put the Development Dept guy (with his Bachelor of arts) in charge of Public Works.

Long story short, there will continue to be more and more of these tragic crashes because licensed engineers are not employed by the city to protect us with all the required safety devices and structures. There is a decision to spend money on other things than proper medians and energy-absorbing barriers.

Sorry to say it, but this administration chooses NOT to have Licensed Engineers in charge of these matters.

What a horrific crash it was, with only small shards of metal left after the crash. It was all right next to an unprotected bike/walk lane as well. It is a killer decision to do without engineers.

Another tragedy for everyone. It will continue happening I fear.

This sounds like an easy opening for a class action lawsuit against the city for making bad decisions that are causing traffic fatalities. This is what you get with Starsky on city council

City Engineer or no city Engineer, this is operator error. It is a shame that innocent people lost their lives, but it is the responsibility of the operator to control their vehicle at all times and operate in a safe manner.

snip  I drive a very fast performance car and I assure you I could be at 100+ easy at the top of the hill if I started at the bridge (but I never would do such a thing).

snip I don't know what kind of BMW it was but I am guessing it was the X-5 M version which is very fast, about 550 HP with twin turbos.  .

Fast performance car or not, with too many pushing 60-70 in regular cars and SUVs, a little more pedal would get you to 100+. The road is ok for the speed limit that allowed them to tap into the existing roadway easier but agree it is a bad curve.

The X5 twin turbo is 300hp and the larger 4.4 liter twin turbo engine is 400hp. Certainly plenty of power especially if impaired.

Please do not miss the point Chris made.

There are ways to absorb energy and prevent fatalities when errors are made by humans.

Licensed engineers are absolutely essential to provide us with the best safety measures -- because everyone makes mistakes.

Engineers protect us from human mistakes.

These are the 11th and 12th such "cross-over, no-median or barriers on high speed city streets"

in just the past few years of these same decision-makers.

The Folsom police seem to like to hide out and watch for speeders, maybe the bridge would be a good place for them to do that. People are driving way too fast on there.

Is that bridge well lit at night? If someone's headlights are not on, what is the visibility like?

Maybe what this city needs is slower posted speed limits. Everyone is in such a damn hurry here its ridiculous! Make all the city street speed limits 35mph MAX!

If someone can't live with 35mph speeds than their life sucks and they should move to LA or back to the Bay Area to live closer to the speed ways they crave

I'm sick of speeders in this town, all these deaths prove there is a serious problem and I fault our city leaders for firing the engineers and laying off police and allowing unsafe speeds on our streets to occur!

The bridge is well lit but the road past the bridge that curves upward and to the right is not.
