How about every say the 1 - 3 reasons why they come to MyFolsom?

1) Referrals -- various types of contractors, service providers. I'd love a living thread for various things -- eyecare, AC repair, car repair, auto tinting, plumbers, yard care, yada yada.

2) Community news -- new businesses, business closures, special events, etc. I think some suggestions above along these lines are good -- maybe work advertising deals w/ local biz and provide them a special area / category where they can list their events. Live music, food specials, yada yada. MyFolsomites can reinforce this by indicating that they patronized the biz because of something they read here. Folsom is small -- we know what biz are here. It'd be nice to know what the evening special is at BSB or Lotus 8 when deciding where to go for dinner. Or which band or what type of live music is at blah blah pub. One stop shop for what's happening around town. Farmer's market vendors -- what's special this week -- particular fruit? Veggie? Copper River salmon?

3)

I keep coming back because:

  1. It's the best place to get up to the minute Folsom news.
  2. I would miss a lot of Folsom events (even if I don't go to all of them) if I didn't check in frequently.
  3. I like to make sure the POV of bicyclists and pedestrians is presented when appropriate.
  4. I like Steve's sensible opinions!

Steve,

I've been pondering some ideas concerning the moderation team. As you know, this has always been a beef with people.

I've also been playing around on some other popular forums, and have seen some things out there that may be a good addition here.

I'll send you something later when I have a chance later this week. :)

As the new, I don't know what I want to call myself; Owner? Webmaster? Grand Poobah?

BTW, I like Grand Poobah. :)

I have always thought the mods could be a little overbearing.  Sure there are posts that were over the top, but some things seem to be censored just because the mod may not have agreed with it.  Ultimately I think that chased a lot of people away.  We're all adults here, and if your skin is that thin then maybe you should go over to Super Weenie Hut Jr's.

Yes agree, there's one in particular who is very heavy handed and seems to take the job way too seriously. Even the grand poobah has edited a lot based on personal beliefs. We're all adults here and were all entitled to our opinions. Mods - please don't treat us like children and don't delete our posts just because they don't 100% align with your beliefs.

This has been a problem since the beginning of this forum. Moderators are tasked with editing, deleting and even banning members for making offensive posts or posting things of no value other than to continue an agenda. When that happens, some people will thank them (us), while others will be offended. It's a difficult balancing act.

We get messages like, "If you don't delete/edit that post, I will leave. It this kind of stuff that's driving good people away!", then, "Why did you edit/delete that post? It's this kind of stuff that is driving good people away!"

"All of the moderators are Liberals and I can't stand it!" or "All of the moderators are Conservatives and I can't stand it!"

Seriously, how could half the complainers believe that we should be editing posts and half say we shouldn't? How could half say we're all a bunch of Liberals and the other half see the very same group as a bunch of Conservatives?"

We must be doing something right, or is it something wrong?

Although homosexuality, racism, religion and abortion can bring out the worst in folks, most of the offensive posts have been about political differences.

What I've chosen to do is to generally stay out of the politics section. I rarely go there, and haven't deleted any posts for probably 2 years. I let the folks there do what they do.

I haven't had any complaints about any of the other moderators in quite some time either. If there are particular issues, please send me a PM.
