There's nothing on their website to confirm your conjecture.

If they wanted to straighten out the flightpath they wouldn't make a sharp left turn when taking off from the south runway over the eastern suburbs. They would instead continue south and make a lazy left turn somewhere around Elk Grove.

Maybe because arrivals come over that area near Sac Exec. Maybe they're trying to avoid coordinating arrivals and departures from going nose to nose. Its got to be an incredible logistical challenge for them without additionally having to worry about each town they overfly. I just worry that thousands of higher altitude noise complaints just makes our gov't bigger and slower as they would have to hire an army of gov't employees to sit in thousands of council meetings around the country to address complaints. It seems logical that they focus on low altitude aircraft instead.

History tells us that when the FAA tried to respond to every little request the result was just to push airplanes over poor neighbourhoods who don't have excess time to complain about noise.

Too bad my wife and I just spent ~$20,000 to landscape our back yard. We spend a lot of time out there now. She will retire next year and we had planned live out our lives here.

Look on the bright side. Your hearing is going to diminish the older you get , so in a few years you won't even hear the planes and you will be able to enjoy your backyard like you planned.

I have noticed these new flights over Folsom in a BIG way in the past month or so.  The comments in regards to the planes being to high to hear simply don't hold water.  These planes are running at 100% to get to altitude and are as loud if not louder than the much lower planes coming into land at Mather.

If the OP is still out there I would like to hear if there has been any response from the city on this?

Thanks for posting Sandman. It seems that most here aren't interested in the new SMF flightpath over Folsom so I haven't been coming here often.

I did finally receive a reply from the FAA on my complaint from 2 months ago.

"Dear Mr. Neal:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has received your email sent on March 11, 2015, and appreciates you taking the time to share your concerns with our agency.  The FAA is reviewing your request and anticipates providing a more detailed response in the near future."

I'm hoping the long delay in responding is because the new flight paths are causing a surge in complaints which they may have to take action on.

No response from the Folsom City Council members. I'm not holding my breath there.

Also note that SMF will just blame the FAA as they are responsible for assigning flight paths.

I'd recommend you write your own complaint to the FAA, specifically mentioning the new NexGen flight track policies. They'll need your address and specific details about the offending aircraft noise. WebTrak will be very helpful with this info.

Note that the path is directly over Folsom when the jets take off on SMF's north runway. They usually do this when the wind is from the north as it was on Sunday June 6th. If they use the south runway the flights will be mostly over south Folsom following Iron Point road.

You might also want to mention the increased traffic from SFO (San Francisco). Many of those flights now go over Folsom but they're at 25-30k feet which are mostly quiet. The exceptions are the B74x and A32x international flights which are lower and much louder. Loaded with fuel and passengers, they are at full throttle still gaining altitude. Those literally vibrate my windows. This is also a new thing since late last year that I didn't even mention in my original post.

I can't fault you for trying, but I hope you don't actually believe this line:  "The FAA is reviewing your request and anticipates providing a more detailed response in the near future."
