I've lived in and around Folsom since the early 1970's. Just like in any situation that involves the ER, you have to wait as they take each patient on the basis of how urgent you need care. I've always been seen...sometimes within minutes, and sometimes having to wait a few hours.

I've always received excellent care for my daughter, who has cronic strep. They've always keep excellent records, which has helped the process of documenting the need for a tonsilectomy.

I have a wonderful family physician, OBGYN and an Urgent Care that sees me when my family doctor can not get us in.

Every health insurance agency, hosptial, and provider has their negatives..such as the tragic story of Candy328 (I'm so sorry to hear you lost your baby!), but I'd say overall the medical facilities in and around Folsom are more than adequate. UC Davis is just minutes away by helicopter in case of critical emergencies that can not be handled by Mercy Folsom, and Mercy San Juan has always provided me great care as well.

My mother, who passed away in 1989 recevied wonderful treatment at Kaiser (Morse Ave), both in their regular facilities and their Hospice Center.

I'm sure that you and your family will be well taken care for, both in Folsom and it's surrounding communities facilities, most within 30 minutes of Folsom...if you decide to move here.

Well, from my experiences Mercy Folsom is pretty much a glorified clinic, and that's it. They do not have any type of a pediatric ward, and if they receive a person with anything more severe than a common cold, they panic and lose their minds. Some of the physicians, Brazell and Johnson to name a couple, are pretty good, both of my daughters have been treated by them. A small handful of the nurses are pretty nice, but it definately seems that the older ones are either burned out, or they hate their jobs. I dunno.

The hospital is woefully inadequate to handle not only all of the Folsom people that depend on it, but a lot of the EDH people that travel a few miles to see an emergency physician. And from what I have heard, the emergency room expansion has been tabled for now. I don't know the specifics, but I do know the project is on hold.

Kaiser is supposedly building a hospital in Folsom in a few years, but take Kaiser insurance at your own risk. Basically it's probably better to just use old time methods and sip grandpa's cough syrup before going to bed...???

I've only had to use Mercy Folsom ER once when my daughter cracked her head open on the coffee table. Aside from a long wait, I thought the care was quite good. I'm not sure of the doctor's name, but he was 'youngish.' He was really good with my very scared daughter.

However, on another occassion, when I thought my daughter may have appendicitis, I called my pediatrician. He adviced taking her to Mercy San Juan rather than Mercy Folsom... that says a lot.

Well, this has been sure been a thread that gives some feeling of apprehension to Folsom Health Care. It sounds like the initial emergency response teams (Fire Department, paramedics, etc) seem very good, but there are a lot of mixed feelings about the local hospital. This is very surprising. I figured that an upscale community such as Folsom would have top notch health care, doctors, nurses at every level.

Another issue to consider.

Thank you.

Yes I would also agree that the Fire/EMT is fast and competent, but the hospital is not. Folsom Hospital can handle straightforward problems, but for anything unusual or nonstandard, they will generally transfer you to Mercy San Juan (about 15-20 minutes away). Mercy San Juan has many specialists onsite as well as a cardiac center.
I have been to the Folsom ER 3 times over the past 10 years and each time was a disaster and disappointment. EXTREMELY long wait times-even when only a few people are in the waiting room. One you get a bed in the ER dept, they spend a VERY long time asking you questions and verifying your insurance--while letting blood run down your face and not doing a single thing to stop it. How long does it take to apply some gauze or antiseptic???
If your insurance allows it, Sutter Memorial in Sacramento or Sutter Roseville are the best hospitals around and both are only about 20 minutes away. Folsom is a great place to live, but the medical care is very substandard.
