by law, convicted sex offenders have to register with local authorities each time they move. failure to re-register upon a move is a volation of the law and is punishable by jail.

The last two or three sex offenders caught in Folsom were not on the registry. In Fox Mulder's words "they're out there." Vigilance is a necessity.

Not to turn this political, but how many of those on the liberal side would be in favor of madatory chemical or physical castration for perpetrators of these crimes?

Aye. I don't even care about the efficacy. I'd also favor death penalty if you want to promote that.

I'd vote for it too with the condition that the evidence was overwhelming in all respects.

In the heat of the moment, it can be hard to acknowledge this, but the perpetrators are victims, too -- there must be something in their background or genes that makes them do this. I think a lot of sex offenders have themselves been sexually abused.

That said, we need to do whatever it takes to prevent them from re-offending and wrecking more kids' lives. Right now, it appears the only option we have is life sentences or (possibly) chemical castration.

Hopefully with more research, we'll one day be better able to prevent people from turning into sex offenders and to "cure" them if they do.

I like nhardy's idea of just killing them.

We should really try to be more liberal with our state sanctioned executions. seriously.

The sad thing, Gaelic, is that it doesn't matter where you moved instead. Maybe your new neighbor is one as well. We just don't know these days. Like BCFan said, this family had all of the indications of being a family to trust, yet we know they were not.

Exactly. We don't/can't know where all offenders are -- those who have moved here and haven't registered, those who have offended but have never been caught. We just have to do our best as parents to take what steps we can to enusre our children's safety.

I know I was thinking that as I wrote it. Is it safe really anywhere?

Statistically, there has never been a safer time to be alive in the history of mankind than right now. Is it really safe anywhere? Absolutely, it's safe almost everywhere.

That's also true. Things are much more well-publicized these days, so we can at least protect our children from the known and registered offenders. And we can watch out for everyone else...

That's always a good point to remember. We live in a society of fear and watching the news only makes one more freaked out.
