Opposition to the City's plans for use of public funds to construct a City Gym continue to come in inspite of the fact that many were busy preparing for the holidays. Use of public funds to construct such a facility is not an appropriate use of scarce public dollars.

For all of those who oppose the spending of $4.1 million dollars for the construction of a City Gym and yearly maintenance costs that could easily exceed $600,000 let's express our opposition to the City Gym. Service Levels provided by the City Police in response to emergency calls are still in excess of 7 minutes and yet the City is determined to use funds to construct a Gym.

Here's the Email addresses to the City Council

Steve Miklos themayor@folsom.ca.us
Eric King eric@ericking.org
Kerri Howell corrprincess@ardennet.com
Andy Morin andy@themorins.com
Jeff Starsky jstarsky@folsom.ca.us

I am gathering Email messages to present to the City Council. If you are opposed to the construction of the City Gym please send me an Email or letter of opposition with your full name and address.

Send your Email to adsi33@hotmail.com

City council is supposed to be thinking in advance about the quality of life in this city and how to plan for it. The gym is part of a general plan that had plenty of public input. They were responsible by removing one of the gyms in the general plan because of the construction of others in the city. There are tons of kids in Folsom, and the sports leagues grow beyond capacity every year. I think it's a good idea as long as they have a plan for paying for ongoing operations.

I oppose a city-gym, and I can easily see where the money can be very well used in other areas.

I have sent an email to the above email addresses telling them of my opinion.

Thank you for posting them.

I would just like to put my 2 cents in. We just moved here to Folsom from a place that had nothing, they didn't even water the playing field for the school. We had to fight to put in one little playground even after the moms had raised all the money. Folsom is a great family place, 30 parks, bike trails, aquatic center, lots of baseball fields(that are watered) and you even have a library. By the way our town library was closed too. Ok so I am glad to have moved to Folsom my point is why not add the Gym it just makes Folsom even a better place to live and have your kids grow up. Hey we pay the taxes wouldn't you rather see it put into something we can use. great.gif

If you want to go to a gym there are plenty in Folsom where you can sign up.

We pay taxes for services that we ALL use like roads, bridges, police, defense, etc.

That money should be put to better use. If they can't find a better use for the money, they should be returning it to the taxpayer.

Lets face it they are never going to give the taxes back to us and the property taxes and such are high here. There are the baseball fields, the aquatic center and other parks, I think it would be nice to have the gym so other sports can be played too. A public gym that is open to everyone without having to join and pay a huge price. Indoor basketball, volleyball, table tennis and badminton,etc.. are all good winter games that need a big gym. I think a gym is a better use of our money than some of the stuff they spend it on! (which is a whole different subject) banghead.gif

Maybe a "public" gym would be nice for a limited number of Folsom residents.

BUT-----FOLSOM STILL DOES NOT HAVE AN ADEQUATE LIBRARY AFTER 11 YEARS!!

Should a public gym come before that?

A library serves ALL Folsom residents and many in surrounding communities. However,----Roseville already has two beautiful libraries and El Dorado Hills is getting a 2nd one in a much smaller community!

I do not understand the priorities of some people.

One of the candidates running for CC says the first thing he will do is cancel the library!

They're never going to give taxes back/reduce taxes as long as residents keep supporting wasteful expenditures.

I can see it now, they build the gym and its free for the first few years, then they start taxing us some more because wages for those that work in the gym rise, and the gym ages, needs renovation, more taxes, and so on and so on.... it just doesn't end. We need a bridge! More taxes.

At some point we have to say, STOP! - What the heck are you doing with the taxes that are coming in? Do what the rest of us do when you want to build something - that is, put money aside for it from existing income.

Boy, I wish I could just go to my boss every month and say, hey boss, I need a new car so you need to give me a raise; now I need to renovate my kitchen, another raise please, and so on.

The library IS coming first, Candyapple. Folsom has a HUGE number of kids, and growing. Basketball, volleyball, and other gym sports will need to be accommodated more and more. Better to build gyms and involve kids in organized sports (and keep active fields at Nisenan), etc. than to have the kids wandering the streets and causing problems.

I agree that there are things to be done around Folsom and I realize it all takes money. And I agree with most everyone that taxes are too high but if we do have things to keep our young ones busy, then they are less likely to do drugs and stay out of trouble. So I think the gym is one of those things that will benefit Folsom.

Hey why stop there.

I'm sure a room full of computers would keep kids off the streets.

How about a room full of video games?

Maybe a city sponsored dance club?

I can probably think of a hundred things that would keep kids off the street. That doesn't mean I want government funding them.

So government now revolves around what you can or can't afford? There are families that can't afford a computer or video games. What of them?

Anyway, that's not the point. The point is why stop at a gym? You probably can't afford to build a dance club for kids either and that too would keep them off the streets.

BTW, If you can afford a computer and video games, you can afford a membership to a gym.
