The Bee reported that Wal-Mart will also build a Supercenter just above the Costco and the proposed Circuit City. If you have never been to a Supercenter, check it out. They have better products than the old stores and great savings.

The shopping center and the existing Wal-Mart is being renovated. I understand that Wal-Mart has abandoned the old blue facade architecture for really nice buildings. This center is one of the oldest centers in town. It is about time to upgrade it.

First let me say, welcome, Newbie.
I'm not sure where you are getting the information that this is one of the oldest centers in town. To many of us it is new. I remember when the lot it sits on was nothing but dredger tailings. I agree it needs renovating, but, most of all, it needs businesses before blight sets in.
I have been to the Super Wal-Mart in Carson City, NV. Can't agree with you about how great it is. Same crap, bigger building. As much as I would love for all the Wal-Mart traffic to head out by the freeway, I worry about what will become of the current center.

Does the city wonder what is going to happen with traffic when all these places are built. It is already bad enough in that area (especially E Bidwell and Iron Point intersection). Maybe they should consider improving the infrastructure first.

If a Super Walmart is built... the old one will close. There are not going to be two Walmart stores in Folsom. This city isn't big enough to support two. This will add little if any tax revenue to the city given the fact... it is just one business relocating... not a new business. As stated... it will be the same old crap... with a grocery area (and groceries aren't taxed).

You are right about not being able to support two stores, especially if Orangevale has their own Wal-Mart.

Three if you count Sam's Club, which is already in direct competition with Costco. I'm not sure why they feel the need to now put a Super WalMart within walking distance of Costco and Sam's Club.
Maybe there's some huge demand for mustard in 5 gallon containers that's going unmet over by the freeway or something, and the Super WalMart will pick up the slack.

And yes... according to the story... I was wrong when saying the old WalMart store would close. As of now WalMart is stating they are going to refurbish the old store to make it more appealing. I still won't concede that the old store on Glenn and Riley will close. I could see WalMart using this as a tactic to get their supercenter built... and then close the old store right after the new one opens. Who is going to stop them from doing it.
Note to the city... you better improve the infrastructure in the E Bidwell and Iron Point area! The traffic there is already horrible...and just think what a SuperWalmart or any other new retail will do. Plan before acting... that's all I ask.

Interesting that Walmart didn't mention the Sam's Club? I would imagine that it has to go being that close to the new location.
I agree that something needs to be done about traffic and especially that horrific dip on Iron Point going Eastbound after you cross Bidwell. And those homeowners that live off Iron Point up the hill a bit probably didn't plan for all this.
Competition is good.
IMHO of course.

Wal-Mart plans first Supercenter along Highway 50 corridor

Confirming one rumor and blowing up another, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Friday that it plans to build a Supercenter, complete with a full-scale grocery department, on Iron Point Road above Costco in Folsom.
The world's largest retailer also announced plans to remodel and expand the city's existing Wal-Mart, on Riley Street, by 28,000 square feet. The remodeled store will not become a Supercenter but will include an expanded grocery section, spokesman Kevin Loscotoff said. When rumors of the Supercenter surfaced, there was speculation that the existing store would be closed.
The Supercenter, almost half the size of Arco Arena at about 200,000 square feet, would be built on slightly more than 25 acres owned by Elliott Homes between Iron Point and Highway 50. The store would be east of a Circuit City store that is planned adjacent to Costco.
Wal-Mart officials say the Supercenter will employ about 400 people. The Riley store employs about 220 people and will employ at least 375 after the expansion.
Folsom's would be the first Supercenter, which sells deeply discounted merchandise and groceries, along the Highway 50 corridor. Wal-Mart has more than 1,700 Supercenters nationwide, but only a handful so far in California.
Amy Feagans, Folsom's neighborhood services director, said the approval process for the store probably would take nine to 12 months after applications are submitted to the city. Loscotoff said construction time typically is 10 to 14 months after approval.

To read more click here for the sacramento bee article. It should be interesting to see what is going to happen.

One is a supercenter and the other an expanded 'regular store". Within 5 miles from each other. It doens't make business sense to me.

This is the third time I've merged Walmart threads in the past two days!! -- Let's see if we can keep the discussion contained to one thread. Thanks.

live right by Costco, so I am worried about the traffic, but it goes further than that. I think
Wal-Mart is not an ethical company. They treat their employees terribly, paying just minimum
wage, and encouraging them to apply for food stamps. When a Wal-Mart comes to town, many
small businesses close. Why? Wal-Mart has the buying power to purchase goods at such a
small amount, and then sell it for at cost sometimes, the local business owner cannot compete.
This Supercenter will most likely have an impact on the local grocery stores. A couple of stores
have closed lately, and I fear that more will after the Supercenter opens. Personally, I like
going down to my local Bel-Air, (and this could be any other grocery store in town), being greeted
by friendly employees, have the freshest produce, meat, and dairy available. If I can't find
something, there is always an employee around to ask. Would I find this at Wal-Mart? No.
I am not rich, far from it, but if shopping at Wal-Mart would save me $20 a week, maybe even
$30, it's not worth it.

The city should really look into this if refurbishing the old store is going to be part of the approval process. Also... they should consider making WalMart pay for all the infrastructure improvements to make sure traffic doesn't become a bigger problem. Its already very congested in the E Bidwell and Iron Point area and everything isn't built yet.
