My wife and I went to Manderes last night. There was some good, some not-so-good. We were shown to our table by the waitress, but she didn't provide us with menus for at least 5 minutes. There were about 20 customers in the place with just the one waitress along with the bartender. He soon came over to help us choose from their very impressive list of beer on tap choices and wine list. The sample of the beer that I chose had a really nice, smooth, rich head on it that tasted a bit like roasted caramel, but I was disappointed when my choice arrived in a room temperature glass and with no head on it at all.
Since it took nearly 45(!) minutes for us to receive the entrees we ordered we had more than enough time to take in the "ambiance". The room is okay as a place to have a beer with friends, and watch one of the 3 TV screens (only viewable from half of the seats and the closed captioning was not on), but as a place for a nice meal the ambiance was below average. Y2Yan has turned a very similar space into something with a nice enough feel, but at Maderes the room is pretty basic.
We were tempted to try the Angus beef burger but instead we ordered the Korean Bulgogi Beef and the Jumbo Black Tiger Shrimp with wine, garlic, lemon and butter sauce. The beef had nice seasoning and was good-quality meat, and not overcooked, but it was a little on the dry side for Bulgogi and didn't come with the sauce we have enjoyed many times in Hawaii.
The sauce for the nicely-cooked shrimps (normal size, not "jumbo") was really basic, and not exciting at all. The sauce could have used some herbs, or maybe some mild seasonings, especially because it was served with a portion of plain white rice. The vegetables served with both dishes were cooked just long enough to heat them and retain their slight crispness, but since they were simply tossed with butter and no herbs or seasonings the vegetables were just something else on the plate.
By the time we got change back from paying the check we had been there more than 80 minutes. Including tip, entrees, and 1 pint of beer and 1 glass of wine, $50.
We say... Ambiance: 3 of 5, Service: 3 of 5, Food: 3 of 5. We both agreed there were at least 10 other places in Folsom in this price range that we would return to for dinner instead of Manderes. As a place to go for a good choice of beers shared with friends, quite possible, except the ambiance is plain.
