JUST A REMINDER - there has been a temporary Mosque and Muslim worship services in Folsom for the LAST 12 YEARS at LEAST !
This is only a new formal Building....

I'm not opposed to the mosque as you all know, but I'll make a prediction. It will never get built. I don't believe they'll ever get enough money together.

Just my thought.

That's an interesting point, Terry.

If they do build the mosque, some of us will be left wondering where they got so much money. I have not seen an estimate of the cost, but I would assume a parcel of land that size in Folsom would cost well over $1 million. Ditto for a 31,000 sq. foot building done in a classic, Islamic style. I would think $2 million is the minimum such a project would cost; the actual cost is probably several times higher.

Assuming $2 million, that would require a contribution of at least $10,000 from every one of the mosque's current 200 member families. I doubt there are many religious groups that could achieve such a level of commitment from their members.

--Unless, of course, a major portion of the mosque is funded by outside groups, as was initially reported in the Bee. Perhaps some day we will find out what outside groups are so interested in building a mosque in Folsom...

Well, now that you mention it, I've wondered this whole time if Intel is involved in any part of the funding, since apparently the bulk of the congregation are employees, and this would make employment there attractive to future employees. Of course, I'm just thinking aloud, have nothing to base that on, and they would be in weird territory paying for employees' religious pursuits.

Why Al-Qaeda of course! Isn't that what you mean to suggest?

Actually Muslims across the U.S. are notified frequently during Friday prayers that X Muslim community in Anytown, USA is building a mosque and needs financial support. The members of the congregation than donate/contribute whatever they can afford to lend support to their brethern. Charity is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Nefarious huh?

I'm not "suggesting" anything. I am wondering.

I doubt it is going to turn out that what the Bee was referring to is collections from other mosques; if this is what they meant, they could simply have said so (as could Mr. Siddique). I do recall that Mr. Siddique specified that the "outside groups" do not have ties to foreign countries... revealing that Mr. Siddique, at least, is aware of the controversy surrounding some American mosques funded by Saudi Arabian interests and groups with ties to terrorism...

Still, Mr. Siddique's coy statements beg the question of who the "outside groups" are.

Why all the secrecy??

O goodness.....

Harsh judgement? Because people were calling them Muslims instead of Muslim Americans? Are you really getting your panties in a twist over this? Sorry for you....

You know, i always did think it was funny though as to why people are concerned that these "outside groups" are terrorists cells. Yes, people, terrorists really want to infiltrate Folsom...that Mels looks like a great terror target! Or hey, why not blow up light rail?

O wait, maybe not light rail, no one is going to use it anyway....

read the rules...not sure how I crossed any lines...hateful, slanderous, obscene, knowingly false...or was it my lack of large cutesy pictures that prompted this?

It was either calling people "idiots" or the "going to heck" thing. I can't say for sure.

Large cutesy pictures are desirable, but not a requirement. For example, here's a picture of a monkey dressed up like a rodeo cowboy riding on a border collie. You will need to drink more coffee for this picture to make sense.
