Are digital camcorders allowed in these meetings?

As I understand it, teachers unions like to shout down the speakers that oppose them, not allowing them to speak (so much for teachers supporting free speech), are bullhorns allowed? smile.gif

Again, I wasn't at the Board meeting, but why would the teachers want to shut it down? Wouldn't they want it to continue and cause a scene? Wouldn't it be the members of the Board that would have wanted it over? Just curious.

Why would the teachers want to make a scene? Can't they handle disagreement like adults?

In the past board meetings have gone past midnight, so I don't think the board would have been too bothered by sitting through a long line of speakers. They would have no reason to shut down the meeting. I think they're bright enough to realize that doesn't stop public discourse.

A parent who was telling me about the meeting told me she called the fire marshall when parents started letting their kids climb the stacks in the library. They are not made for that and it was very dangerious.

ohmy.gif [post="17501195.htm"]teachers strike stopped by senate[/post]
I don't know much about how a strike would work, but even if teachers did strike; what about the kids going to school? The reason I ask is because I hear on the news of parents being arrested for their children not being forced to go to school. If a school was not able to function due to a strike, would the school get into some kind of legal trouble?

Ok I know te folsom teachers do not want to strike but I was just wondering.

Parents of kids under the age of 12 can be arrested for allowing their kids to be truant. Over a certain age the child themselves could be arrested. Both Folsom and Rancho Cordova have daytime curfews, so school aged kids can be detained for being out and about when they should be in school. How much would be enforced would probably depend on how long it went on and whether it was causing problems for the communities (kids hanging out with nothing to do and causing trouble).

The schools wouldn't be likely to close as certificated (teaching certificate) administrators would go back to the classrooms and retirees and substitutes would be hired. It's not the ideal but keeps things going.

Personally, I would never keep my kids out of school to support a dispute between the adults who should be educating them. There was a strike in my former district, and I was perfectly happy to cross the picket line and take the kids to school (much to their chagrin). The strikers on the line were quite pleasant about it too. None of the militancy I saw at the last board meeting. They simply made their statement for a few days. We have no reason to believe it will come to this point in FCUSD.

How come I always see kids around town during the middle of the day?

We had lunch at Mark and Monicas last week, and kids were just pouring in and out of the place! That would've had you busted at my school... I see them walking up and down E. Bidwell and all over town!

I even hear the Folsom High kids get Half Days on Fridays?!?! That's just insanity!

Kids go to work experience, regional occupational (vocational training), and school gets out at 1:22 on Fridays because we work longer minutes during the week. There are a set number of minutes per year students must attend school. Scheduling is done by contract negotiation. This timing, along with the two block days during the week, give students time to make up missed assignments and get ready for extra-curricular activities. They go, and teachers go to meetings until 3:03, just like any other day.

Of course, kids do cut school or go to appointments and the like. As for myself, I spent more time cutting class than going to school. I said that I'd never step back inside a school again, such was my miserable existance at school. Some kids know they want to be teachers really, really early and have really great experiences. High school life is a wonderful time for them. Others, like myself, want to reach out to the forgotten, demeaned student and help them get through it without so much misery. It ain't easy, and it ain't always fun, but it's worth every minute when you're certain you've made a difference.

It could be year round kids from other communities.

I was a bad student! I "dropped out" at age 15 via a CHSPE. But there's still no way I would've been caught dead in a bar at 1pm in the afternoon on a Tuesday! and I certainly never had half days on a Friday. Something is wrong, IMHO.

Well, I didn't realize that even if the teachers did strike that the school would be open.
Honestly, I don't see the point of a strike then. I mean it kinda takes the fires out of the fight.
I haven't seen a lot of kids out of school during school hours but most of the ones I do see I tend to automatically think they are homeschoolers.

I just wanted to quickly share a message that I received with all of you. As many of you know, the school board has elected to continue our March 1st meeting on Thursday March 15th at Cordova High School. Some of you have shared with me that you felt the board has moved it down to Rancho Cordova because they don't think, or perhaps want, the Folsom parents to show. Apparently they don't realize that we are the very same parents that get up at the crack of dawn to drive our children to neighboring, and not so neighboring cities for that matter, so that they may compete in a variety of tournaments, meets and competitions. Maybe they don't know how many of us have gotten out the door early, only to stand in the freezing cold and wait all day in a line with other parents just to sign our children up for Kindergarten. How many of us have stood out in front of stores before the crack of dawn to ensure that we got that special toy or game for our child that was advertised not only for a great price, but also in limited quantities? Another ten or fifteen minute drive is not going to keep the Folsom parents away! We are willing to go the distance for our children's best interest.

Board meetings are rotated between RC and Folsom each month. No change was made to that rotation schedule.
