When we moved here 13 years ago, Folsom was regarded as semi-rural.

-Woody's (that's Orangevale though)
-Thrify's, esp for the ice cream and the 80s feeling
-Mr Video (very laid back, friendly video store. I started alot of my collection there)
-skating rink
-Food Source (the employees once let me joyride on the motorized carts! I kept trying to burn rubber by hitting the brake fast, lol)
-open space on Bidwell and other areas
-old stuff inside the Raley's (i.e. they had a TAPE selection left of the front entrance! I still have a Billboard Hits of '85, Amy Grant and Weird Al tapes I got there as a kid)
-lots more I'm probably forgetting now
I'd say there's three basic "areas" of Folsom - 1. the old/downtown area which has been there for many years; 2. the "suburban" part (let's say from the point Bidwell splits off from Riley... like covering the WalMart area); and 3. the "new" part from Blue Ravine out to the freeway.
When I lived there it was basically just #1 and the forming of #2 (it was kinda cool seeing Walmart and Red Robin being built and going there when it was basically new). #3 didn't even exist yet, that was still all fields and a few houses. Best I can tell from Google, that area didn't even start getting developed until 1998ish, and not noticeably until '03/04. Can anyone confirm this?
In a way I got the best mix of rural and city in the early-mid 90s. It's probably a double edged sword, like it's nice to have more variety/places to go, but also sad to see something familiar change - there doesn't seem to be much scenery or open fields in cities in the past few years.

Wow can't believe this thread came back from the dead. Yeah we know Rite Aid has Thrifty ice cream but it just not the same, hard to explain.
but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
"Wow! What a Ride!"

Does anybody remember the Gas Farm????
How about the chinese restaurant next the grocery store when it was next to El Dorado savings...
Finally, there used to be an awesome shaved ice shack in the hill near the Saloon(Powerhouse Pub) lower parking lot accross from the river....

Oh neat, it was actually attached to the store? That might've even been before I lived there, so I probably never went in... I'm pretty sure Lucky's was there by '90/91 but I'm not positive since my parents usually went to the Raley's or the Albertson's in Orangevale.

Wasn't it where Bailie's and now Mooney's is? I'm racking my brain trying to remember the name of it. I want to say Ming's.
We used to like to stop at that shaved ice shack in what is now the parking lot below Sutter St.

The grocery store was the Royal Market and the chinese restaurant was the China Dragon (with the red doors, and the owner's name was Steve!). They had the very best chinese food.
And yes, I remember the Gas Farm, and Yukon Restaurant, and the roller rink all in that same area.
