I believe the Maidu indians are native to Folsom.

They, however, did not order their lattes "venti", but did prefer their mochas "no whip"

Oh yeah, that reminds me: they'd have *real* whips there too

Is there any city plan for this neighborhood? What's the goal of the historic district? Do they want to attract tourists or residents? Has it been determined what is missing in the area? For instance, if they want to increase the number of residents in the area, is there a local small market to serve them? If they want to serve tourists, what retail establishments are needed?

Going at this in a piece-meal fashion and expecting it to be a cohesive effort isn't going to work.

Many of these questions have been answered via the Historic District Revitalization effort.

Key Stakeholders from both residents and businesses within the HD have been meeting for months to bring the plan and goals of the region forward.

Sadly, a psychiatric center and starbucks I believe were lowest on the list, but seem to be the first developments happening.

Among the challenges to the revitalization effort is the fact that unlike Old Town Sac, Sutter Street is surrounded by residences.

Many of those who live in the neighborhood are against development, as it brings more traffice through their neighborhood, cars parked in front of their homes, and the noise that comes from the partying.

More dissapointing news on the Historic District

http://www.sacbee.co...ory/101591.html

I think these recent developments (starbucks and low income housing) are tragic to the momentum the Historic District Revitalization effort has attained.

We call this area the "jewel of the city", and yet it's apparently becoming another strip mall and dumping ground for the housing nobody else wants.

My thoughts exactly!

Jerry and company are selling out Folsom's Historical district and turning it into strip mall!

I listed the goals of the historic district commision (from the Folsom city website) in a previous post - but it sounds like the developers are not following any of the plans and just doing what they want. Money must be speaking louder to Jerry then the city's goals for that area.

I always assumed old town was intended for tourists to visit and for citizens to enjoy some local history and some nice restaurants and business' that are unique and fit in to the area as opposed to chains

The goals of the commission are seperate from having a plan in place for development. It's like heading out with or without a map, but with much bigger consequences!

Isn't the commision tasked with managing developement plans?

It seems the bigger problem is with lack of cooperation from Jerry, old towns only(?) developer....or at least he's the one who appears to have the most money.. and power and influence there. So its either Jerry's way or no way

Where is Jerry anyways? If he gave a hoot about the city he'd be part of the commission or concerned about citizen feedback - which can be read on that redevelopement website

From what I've read here and elsewhere, Jerry only has his best interest in mind, not the city's at all so he could turn old town into Disneyland if he wanted too

Let me clear things up here. Jerry Bernau and Sutter Court LLC were never partners or never planned to be partners in Lockdown. They are building owners that were going to lease the space. They were to be landlords and that is it.

4thgen states it correctly, it is a business decision that needs to be made by each side. Unfortunately, the decisions on each side could not forge an agreement. Nothing more. We wish Sutter Court the best.

We are far from giving up. We will find that location that will work.

We appreciate the suport and enthusiasm for our concept. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going. By the way, the golf tourney will have its 3rd annual in June.

Robert

I am re-posting our (Myles and I) oriniginal post in response to questions/accusations highlighted below. Nothing personal, it's just business! We still support anything that breaths life into the Historic District. We are both residents of the district.

Also, with all due respect, I do not think it is fair to single out Historic Folsom as "a bunch of drunk twenty somethings" being on the street shortly after lunch. IMO you can find that, or something very similiar, in any district that contains restaurants that serve alcohol.

I have to say that it sounds pretty funny to hear you all complain about a bank and a coffee shop when it's yet another bar you wanted. Another bar?! Come on! Is Sutter street supposed to be the next great place to find hundreds of people at a time all gathering in one area to get intoxicated or is it supposed to be a place where families want to come and spend time enjoying the history and unique shops? There is already too much alchohol there, thank you. I don't need to take my kids for a saturday stroll down the old streets for lunch, a visit to the museum, an ice cream cone and to watch a bunch of drunk twenty-somethings hootin and hollerin.Very nice, very classy, another bar. No thanks.

The toy store will be very nice, a bank and starbucks is basically innocuous. And speaking of shameless greed (since you brought it up in a previous post), who's doing the whining here? The guy who didn't get to put the bar in? His friends? I doubt it's the other local merchants or families who patronize Sutter street.

I never said it was, I suggested that yet another bar will lead it in that direction. Same thing happened in Old Sacramento for a while, too much nightlife. It bled over to weekend days, not a great atmosphere for families and tourists and the property owners made changes.

Have you seen the television commercials for the bar/nightclub in old town (sorry, the name of the place eludes me at the moment)? Pathetic! Drinking and sex. Personally I have no problems with those 2 subjects, but I don't find it in good taste or smart business to place it in the sameplace with family oriented destinations. I just think money and not revitalization is reason for the establishments promoting drinking in old town Folsom.

Hopefully the new building owners at the west end of Sutter street took this into account when they made their decision.

There is a sign in the window of one of the new shops in that building for Mind Over Matter Toys coming soon. I applaud that decision!!

That is sad.

I was in the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco today, and along Jefferson Street, where independent businesses once stood, there's now a Starbucks, GAP, Rainforest Cafe, Hooter's, In and Out Burger, and there was a sign announcing a 'Sunglass Hut'.

I suppose Sutter Street will look the same before too long.

I'm ok with a Hooters near Sutter Street! lmaosmiley.gif

Hehehe exactly! and the Starbucks coffee should be brewed over an open fire and served in tin can cups. Course it needs to be strong enuf to grow hair instantly too hahahaha!

hey I like that idea of a dance hall, maybe add a vaudeville theater too!

Someone mentioned a toy shop, that'd actually be a neat store to be there.

Interesting that you mention a dance hall and a vaudeville theater - both of those were on Sutter Street into the 60s. And the drug store that was there had toys!
