Dumplings sound good in this rainy weather. What exactly is in a Ukranian dumpling?
Doubt I'll have time for lunch today, but if something cancels I'd like to give it a try.

Ukranian dumplings are the same as Polish pierogi and being Polish I've eaten those since childhood. The fillings are varied such as potato and cheddar cheese, blueberry, sour kraut, mushrooms ect. After the dough is made and the filling enclosed it is boiled for about 3 minutes. It's ready to eat at this point or you can saute them lightly in some butter or olive oil and then serve with sour cream. Depending on the filling you can serve them either as an entree, side dish or dessert. I've made them quite a few times but they are time consuming but so worth it. Ok, that's probably more than you wanted to know about Ukranian dumplings. :D:

Try Old Europe

Hey Dude,
We've been to Old Europe since it was called Heart of Europe back in the old location. To us they are more German slanted and also more of a dinner destination place. I'm looking for a little Ukrainian cafe/deli where I can run in and get something to go or grab a quick bite of authentic Ukrainian food. It's what I miss most about SF, the great diversity of cultural food.
Thanks for the suggestion though, cuz we do enjoy Old Europe.

I ate at O! Brot today and tried the borscht. I grew up on beet borscht, so just assumed that was what I was getting. This was a cabbage and beef borscht -- tasty, but a bit oily.

I ate my favorite chicken rice soup today. Had also borscht this week, don't you think it's a beef makes it oily? I, personally, liked it as is, but maybe you can distinguish it better than me.

Well, maybe if it's fatty beef; I use lean beef in my beef and barley soup and it doesn't produce an oily soup. I have found that some European soups use a lot of oil.

Oh, and not just European soups. I used to love getting the tomato bisque at La Bou. One time I bought some to have at home for dinner, took it home and put it in the fridge, and when I took it out I was shocked at how much oil was sitting on top of the soup. I chucked it and never ordered it again.

Had lunch there today. Glad to see it busy but unfortunately, have to say it didn't thrill me. Had the tomato soup which I took two sips of and left untouched. The roast beef sandwich was okay but nothing exciting or interesting. Bread on sandwich was very good though. Desserts looked nice in the case. I might stop in for a cup of tea and a cookie sometime but not to eat lunch again.

Their cakes are from Ettore's, which used to have a bakery there. O! Brot carries some of their baked goods, but last I heard only gets them a few times a week.
