Wish I could have made it over to Aloha for the Ichiban (my all-time favorite).
Last night was my first try at Taiko and I was underimpressed. First off, I showed up late and missed the TNT. The fish was fishy and the Hamachi left a very fishy aftertaste in my mouth. ICK The Taiko Folsom roll was my favorite, but paled in comparison to my two favorites at Aloha.
The fact that there was food left on the table that we didn't eat by the time we left said a lot, IMO.
What bothered me the most, though, is that two of the rolls had cream cheese in them. I'm not a sushi snob, but that's really not authentic at all. I love cream cheese, mind you, but in sushi is just covers your taste buds and hides the other flavors.
Regarding service, I wasn't impressed though I did like that the server said the kids' dishes were big enough to split. He also offered to bring a side of tobiko (fish eggs) for the kid's California roll since they love, love, love it. (It was a little sweet tasting, which I thought odd. Didn't stop my kids from eating spoonfuls of it, however.) After my kids were done eating, I asked his help in clearing some space on the crowded table so they could use the coloring books we brought. After a couple of times at our table, he just dropped a box off and didn't clear away anything. It was obvious most of the plates were done with (empty) and we cleared the table ourselves.
My kids weighed in with their opinions, too. My son didn't think any of the maguro, hamachi or hirame smelled at all. My daughter thought only maguro didn't smell. They both liked the maguro. However, on her own without prodding, they said the gyoza (dumplings) are better at Aloha. The tonkatsu (fried breaded pork) was flavorful, but dry and stringy. The miso soup was really good, however, and had lots of cubes of tofu.
All in all, my experiences at Aloha were better and I'm looking forward to next week.
