You might as well make that line a sticky because it can be used in half of the threads here.
How many therapists does it take to screw in a light bulb? Just one, but the light bulb has to want to change.
If the train wasn't safe my wife wouldn't ride it and neither would all of the other fine folks from the Folsom area who are on it each morning. My wife estimates there are 40-60 people on each train in the morning by the time it leaves Iron Point Station, and it's SRO after the Sunrise Station.
Sutter Street station collects all the folks from Granite Bay and parts of Folsom and Orangevale. Glenn stations collects folks from Folsom, and Iron Point collects mostly folks from EDH and further up the hill. So, what kind of folks get on the train at those stations?

What kind of folks get on it in Rancho? Or further down the line?
The fine folks from EDH, Granite Bay and Folsom aren't the only people riding that train, you know.
But as far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier! When people are riding it, that means they are buying tickets and that means maybe it can be self supporting.
Yeah!!!!!
Merry Christmas!!!!

6-9 am weekdays from Folsom: quiet, polite working people, capacity filled, an enjoyable ride and an asset to Folsom
10 am -3 pm anyday: stinky, dirty, better put your IPOD buds in if you don't want to hear the worst language you've ever heard, kids skipping school to go do drugs, talk about the latest crime spree, child abuse, domestic abuse, and some downright sad individuals in sad situations
Both happen everyday, it's a fact.

Very well said Warren - and its really nice to hear from someone who's ACTUALLY been using light rail instead of being all freaked out and paranoid about it.

thats true for the most part - just look at all the posts here by people freaked out by it.
I've taken busses and trains to get around since I was a kid, in fact (you'll like this) I was riding busses in Chicago going cross town at age 12 to get to the lake when I used to spend my summers there. Never feared anything, my cousin and I (who was the same age) even took those Chicago busses at night to get around town and hit the movie theaters. Never once had a parent with us, never once had any problems.
Back here in Cali when I lived in So Cal I used to take the train to go to work - it was a 60 mile one way commute and I absolutely loved being able to get on the train and relaxe the entire way, read the paper, drink my coffee, work on my laptop - sure it took a bit longer but heck it was great and I always enjoyed stopping at Union station to switch trains - its such a grand place and it was cool getting off the train and checking out Olvera Street sometimes, its the heart of Los Angeles where the city really first started out way back when. (check it out http://www.olvera-street.com/)
I also took trains every where I went when I was in Japan - they have the best public transportation on the planet there - its like utopia, they even had a monorail - they really know how to do it right and the people aren't afraid to use it
I really don't get why some folks here are so freaked out and paranoid about light rail - and ironically I bet every single one of those folks freaked out about it has never once been on a train or any kind of public transportation

I drove past the Folsom light rail stations the other day and sort of counted the cars. I never knew that there were so many dangerous people in Folsom, and such nice cars they have too. But some of those SUV's did look big enough to live in.
I've heard rumors that in some countries people actually prefer to ride the trains around the cities. My wife says that the trains in Paris, Prague, and Rome are pretty good, but in Venice, not so good.

this is true, when I was in Japan more people took trains then drove because it was very expensive for gas there and the public transportation was actually more convinient then driving was. I spent several weeks there and did not step in a car once the entire time - took trains to all my appointments, going out etc - they really do have public transportation down to a science
and another neat thing about it was that they had legions of people constantly keeping the train stations neat and tidy and plenty of officers around to keep the peace - it was a very pleasant experience and I hope someday we can have as good as public transportation as they have, then maybe people won't fear it so much

Some people like things perfectly safe. Like being surrounded by 2-ton hunks of metal guided by people talking on their cell-phone while they shave or put on make-up. And those things aren't appreciated on a train.

Both of my daughters and their friends have taken it to the K Street mall with their friends and have had no problems.
If you look back on the threads before light rail came to Folsom, we had people predicting crime sprees, homelessness, and gangs in Folsom.
One claimed that the gangs will come up from Rancho to 'wreak havoc' on the community, as if they've been waiting for a way to get to Folsom for years, but didn't have cars and weren't going to steal them.
Another claimed that burglars would take light rail, then hit the homes around the station, and make their escape on ligh trail. I guess they'd be sitting on the bench with TV's and computers on their laps.
One claimed that all of the homeless would move up here to get away from the City, (abandoning the streets they knew, the shelters, soup kitchens and health services they get there.)
One even claimed that a cop she knew had purchased one-way tickets from K street to Sutter, months before the station was open, to get rid of the homeless there and make them our problem (didn't matter that tickets for Sutter Street weren't on sale yet).
More than one said they would sell their homes and move further up the hill.
None of it made sense, but since when does irrational fear make sense?
