There's a difference between treating people with respect, and respecting them. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect until they do something to change that.

If there is not some sort of respect then you can't treat them respectfully. I do like the part Supermom said about civility is given until respect is earned.

Davburr-
I feel like you and I went toe to toe on a couple of topics here, but I've also grown to respect what you have to offer this forum and to me personally. Likewise, I'd buy you a beer and have offered up cigar night to others on this forum before.
I very much like Steve, but he's one of only a couple of folks I've actually met in person, although I've talked to a few others in PMs.
I agree with what you're saying. it's just as I've stated int he very recent past. If someone is going to be a keyboard warrior, we'd all be better served if they exercised their right to remain silent!
I don't "dislike" anyone here, but I do think there are some pretty annoying people. Follow grandmas advice and when you don't have anything nice to say, just don't say anything.

We all dream of a world of sunshine and rainbows and peace. The problem is some people think this would be a great place to live, while others think it would be a great place to pillage.

debate the merits of the argument and stop worrying about the background of who posted it
doesn't matter if it's Satan or the Virgin Mary posting
if you knew who posted, then you'd likely agree with the Virgin Mary and disagree with Satan
in other words, no consideration of the argument at hand, but rather the poster
as long as that's the case, and arguments aren't debated on their merit, multiple IDs will continue

Just figured I would add my 2 cents in here
I have been a board administrator since before the days of the internet, back when you had to dial in with your 300bps modem to my PC AT that had 2 telephone lines connected to it so I could have 2 users on at once (bleeding edge tech).
The trick is in creating the community with a purpose. Some people will be offended, and they will leave because they don't like the rules. But better that than allowing it to be destroyed by the nasties. Eventually you will attact a host of quality people that respect each other, even if they disagree. And we can have great discussions.
I've made the mistake myself, and ended up pulling the plug on a BBS community I spent 2 years building, due to a few nasties who decided to make my board their dumping ground. I should have just deleted every post they created immediately... rather than falling for the "free exchange of ideas" line. It cost me dearly.
John has every right to edit or remove any and every word written here. It is a privately owned board. There is no such thing as censorship here. My advice, be ruthless in the beginning, and remove any post that contains a name-calling -- or at least edit that portion of the post if there is anything redeemable in the rest of the body. Eventually things will calm down as people begin to understand the "rules"
We board members can help too. Just don't respond to the baiters. Don't post in their threads, in fact, don't even read them. And don't respond to their instigations when inside another's thread. Just realize who and what they are.
I know everyone feels like they need to respond directly to any challenge, no matter how absurd. But you really don't.
I am appreciative of this forum, and I know first hand how much work it is to keep it alive. I'd hate to see quality people leave due to inconsiderate troublemakers.

Did you used to work with Al Gore?

I'm going to try and take a hard line against the negative posters on the board. Chip Shot, as you may have noticed, has been given a 1 week suspension. He wasn't happy about it, but a lot of times the cooling off period works... 99% of the people here contribute in a positive manner... those who don't, won't be welcome.
I have also encouraged mods to edit attacks on the board. We've let it slip too much and it's time to get back to the basics.
"Be cool, or be gone!"
