Did you go and see the world's biggest ball of mud too while you were out Clark?

Btw, the idea that any tourist dollars would come here because of the name of a bridge is crazy talk. How many fans does the guy still have? Places like SF and Tahoe get tourists, not towns of stripmalls and a lake that is 1/2 empty by July 1.

You dont' get out much or listen to much music do you?

I really hate to burst yer tiny reality bubble dude, but Johnny Cash was.. and still is very popular with millions of fans worldwide... and Folsom DOES get tourism, I'm surprised you've not heard of historical Folsom yet... rolleyes.gif

They make lots of movies, it doesn't prove to me that it will draw people here to see a bridge or justify naming it after him. They made a lot of movies about Hitler too.

psssst.... guess what people flock to visit in Austin (and hey its next to a bridge) ?... wont' bother telling you who that is because you wouldn't know him even if I did....

Pssst, Austin is one the hottest, hippest, booming towns in the US, Folsom doesn't hold a candle so the comparison is way off. As for the tourist issues, almost all the things on that website are thing to do around here, such as rafting, gold country, wine tasting etc. If you want to blow an hour and see the Outlet Mall, Prison gift shop, or Sutter Street that's cool but please don't make it out like Folsom is a huge destination getaway.

I personally don't get the Johnny Cash reference for the bridge. Sure, he sang a concert here. Sure, he used Folsom Prison in a song. But in the same song he mentions Reno and San Antone. I'm pretty sure he played concerts elsewhere. Nothing besides using our prison, where he never spent time, as a reference says anything about Mr. Cash's opinion of Folsom. For all we know, he hated the place? Why name a bridge after what is essentially a flash-in-the-pan hit, that happens to have been a recent hit with a movie about his life.

Granite City is at least a flashback to a lot more history than 1 singers 2 visits to our fair town.

Folsom Dam highlights the history of the Dam, of which I understand the bridge will have a great view! The history of the Dam, the prison, the powerhouse, are fascinating parts of this city. The fact that the bridge was built as a replacement to the Dam road, and all the history and political battles that ensued. Personally, I think the Folsom Dam has a lot more connection to this bridge than any of the other categories.

Folsom Lake makes no sense to me. Can you even see the lake from the bridge? The bridge certainly doesn't "bridge" the lake. If you name something "Foo Creek Bridge", I would expect that bridge to cross Foo Creek.

Sorry Mylo, you're way off. As John, Dav, and Stevethedad say the tourism $$$ will roll in once they waste the name of the bridge on world super star Mr. Cash.

Cash is a big part of music history to music aficionados, and that song was the first time I'd ever even heard of the town of Folsom - I'm betting millions worldwide also first heard of Folsom that way too - thats why I personally (just my opinion) see Cash as part of our town's history, that song sorta put this town on the map.

until this poll about the naming of the bridge, I'd never ever heard of Folsom's prior name being Granite City.... I think most people would confuse that with Granite Bay which is nearby

Folsom Dam Bridge is boring, might as well call it 'Dam No. 103'

It's not that seriously important but I say give the new bridge an interesting name, something that will make people think about it.... and Folsom

this is a marketing opportunity, looking forward to seeing what'd decided

That's one reason why I really don't like that choice. Let's at least keep it related to Folsom.

No kidding. I was willing to go another 50 posts before I suggested "Hitler Bridge" too!

Gotta be quick around here.

Hitler and the third Reich bridged France and Romania, just as the new Folsom Bridge brings north and kinda-east Folsom together.

How far out of your way was it? Because I-40 was paved right through the middle of it.

biggrin.gif I miss that country sometimes, my folks had a bit of land between there and Camp Verde that they never built a cabin on...

Historic Route 66 runs right through Winslow. It was right off the interstate IIRC.

I just checked the map. The Winslow leg added about 40 miles (round trip) to our itinerary since we hadn't otherwise planned on going past Meteor Crater.

I think that even the bridge names that were associated with 9/11/Homeland security would have more to do with this bridge than a Johnny Cash name, since it is what actually drove the construction of this bridge in the first place. I'm prompted to wonder too...if Johnny Cash provided such a boon to this city...why don't we have a street or any kind of civic building/statue or anything already for him? And given the bridge's proximity to the prison, it is understandable how one would want to associate the bridge with the prison. But you gotta ask yourself...what would you want your city associated with? A beat up prison part of the ever growing and failing California inmate housing condition problem....or a dam that possibly saved thousands of lives by holding back potentially devastating flood waters over the years (while providing an invaluable recreational asset to the region)?
Are you kidding baby...I put the GRRRRR in swinger baby....YEAH! lol
