I would love to upgrade to sprinklers that turn on and off automatically, but can't afford it right now. that would be where the city might want to spend a few bucks...
hey! I know, let's write a grant proposal for installling automatic sprinklers for city residents!

Coastal Cohort...I feel your pain. Here's my version of automated: Attach sprinkler, turn nozzle, water lawn. But I can carefully control how much water is being used so I don't really mind-we seem to use far less water than the neighbors with automatic systems. And you know the sprinklers aren't ever accidently going on in the rain around my yard!

Let's not. Why should my tax dollars pay for automatic sprinklers for those too cheap to pay for them on their own.

And since when does not having automatic sprinklers mean a person is generalized as "too cheap to pay for their own"? Tsk tsk. Let's try and think outside our perfect manicured yards for a while shall we?

I like perfectly manicured yards... we don't ALWAYS have one, but if we had the time... it would ALWAYS be perfect! smile.gif

So I took a "short" shower, and am turning off the water while brushing my teeth...

And I got my kid to do it too.

Chris said, "I don't care, I am going to water my yard! It is FINALLY green!! I am NOT giving that up!" But then again, we don't let the water run down the street.... and he is very good with the timer. (lawn junkie!)

Not much more we can do to "save water" here though.....

only flush once a day
dry clean ALL your laundry
set up culverts to catch the sidewalk runoff of your neighbors and divert it to your lawn

If someone says they want something but says they can't afford it, then they are being too cheap to buy it. You might think I am being too harsh, but even those who are living paycheck to paycheck in this town, I am sure are wasting money on things that they could do without in order to afford an automated sprinkler system.

for instance, are they buying pre-made meals or cooking from scratch?
Do they smoke? Quit and save yourself $100's of dollars every year.
Gotta have that Starbucks each morning, another $100's of dollars each year.

That's my point, why should my tax dollars pay for someone else to have a luxury item!
I would rather be Backpacking

Smoking and drinking coffee aren't luxury items, they are addictions and people would rather die than give those up in place of a $30 sprinkler timer.

Maybe for some it's not the purchase but the installation that makes them procrastinate.

So, here is a question:
how often and for how long do you run your sprinklers right now?

Here's another question. When you switch to Wednesday, Friday, Sunday will you water twice as much to keep things green?

"You might think I am being too harsh..." Nooo, I wouln't say *that's *the adjective I'm thinking about you now... angry.gif

You are *really* judgemental and make a lot of false assumptions! I was going to ignore your (negative adjective here) earlier comment and let others take you to task as they already have, but this is really too much.

I am not cheap. That's insulting. You don't know me or know my lifestyle.

First, I haven't visited a Starbucks (or any other coffee house for that matter) in years. I don't smoke and we try to restrict our eating out to 1-2 times a month.

I watch what I spend so I can retire in comfort.

I can't afford a $1000 right now for automatic sprinklers as I just bought a house and had to put 30k into making it livable an dit wiped out my savings.

My suggestion was tongue in cheek and frankly I find your definition of them as "Luxury" hysterical.

Why don't you try and have an actual conversation on here instead of the judge-fest and insult-o-rama that you typically post???

If you are watering responsibly then every other day will suffice. Lawns do not need a daily watering and they do not need to be on as long as 'most' of those I see in our hood, Pots do - but they use so little it wont make a difference...
Most other landscaping can easily survive ( with a very few exceptions by plant type) in the summer with 3 times a week watering.
Trees should be slowly deep soaked ( not at the trunk, but under the canopy) as well as other deep root plants. We trickle water to them for many hours but only use a fraction of what many use that runs off and once they are slow deep soaked they are fine for a few days or a week or more...
Your vegies might need daily watering but again that is fairly low consumption...

With are large lush back yard we rotate by zones by day ( we have 5 drip/ low flow sprinkler , plus 4 others that use a manual rotating double sprinkler that I made... they are on timers.. we water our redwoods 2hours- 2 times a week...

Since we have been using a good schedule already , I am concerned about with the rationing by day is that the runoff and water loss may be higher as we would be using more water every other day to cover all the zones instead of rotating to allow soak in on our own schedule as there are some overlaps and this clay soil can only absorb so much water at one time...the rest goes into the french drains.... We will see...

I wish we could monitor our own daily meter ... do they work and how to read them as I have tried to check and have odd readings from one day to the next ...

We do however do shower together so we save water that way as well ...
Cheers
