150 GB bandwidth cap is coming to AT&T U-verse in 2009. After 150GB, the charge will be an extra $5 per gigabyte. That would be an extra $100 per month to match the 250GB cap on Comcast HSI.

I have Comcast - and can stay statefully connected to VPN's, SSH Tunnels, IPSEC VPN's, Reverse Proxy's, etc... solid my entire 9+ hour work day. I have had no issues with this.

I also have MUCH lower LAG than my ATT Friends in the same games.

I've had ZERO issues with anything I do on the "NET" and I live on it and work on it.

Current BW from Comcast:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 19905 kbps (2488.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2151 kbps (268.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
20MB dn / 2MB up.

So everyone's mileage vary's......

I've been a network engineer for 14 years. I even ran my own ISP (in dialup days). I know how the bits get split. Comcast has real "outages". Actual lost routes, dropped packets, etc. that cause greater than an annoyance if you're doing anything besides TCP 80 web browsing. Try maintaining an SSH session through that much loss. Or for the gamers out there watch your ping and lag. It's Comcastic!

My issue is less about the technical infrastructure. Having seen it in the early days, and understanding what they use today, it's technologically sound. I take much greater issues with their lack of customer service, lack of decent change control, and general lack of serious network management.

Overall, as highlighted by their recent packet filtering activities, it demonstrates a complete lack of concern for their customers. They don't care if you're happy. They're a big monopoly that just wants your money and doesn't have to offer decent Internet service.

wow, first I'll guess you have power boost.

2nd guess, Comcast hates Mylo and screws him whenever they can.

Everybody has power boost, it kicks in temporarily when you are downloading files larger than 10MB.

sounds reasonable to me - make the bandwidth hogs who download all day pay for their extra usage

That explains why that 73MB file I downloaded started out at about 100KB per second and ramped up to >200KB per second. I thought power boost was something you had to pay for as extra.

Careful there. With the amount of legitimate streaming media and more HD content available everyday, those caps are going to seem awfully low in the not so distant future.

Also, am I wrong in assuming that since ATT serves up it's television programing via TCP/IP? If so will this usage be counted in the bandwidth calculation?

That sounds slow to me...
I consistently get 600+ KB/s with AT&T DSL.

that may change as more people switch, and maybe my transfer rates will go up.

Not reasonable. It seems they want to limit/discourage people from streaming Netflix and AppleTV and Amazon Unbox movies and pay for cable Video On Demand though them instead.
AppleTV, Amazon Unbox and Netflix are starting to offer HD content for instant streaming and it will not take that many HD movies, HD Television programs and HD video podcasts streamed/downloaded to reach these caps.

After you add online data backup and restore services to this, you have an even bigger problem.

It sounds reasonable, until someone hacks your wireless internet passkey and downloads way above said limit and you're stuck with the bill.

Happens WAY more often than you think, only way to prevent such an occurrence is to disable wireless completely.

Yes, Comcast is riding the coat tails of broadband cable Internet that @Home helped bring to the masses.

I had @home back in '99, and it was the best ISP i've ever had. I feel like every ISP i've had since then has been worse.

Comcast did me a favor recently.

Called to try and get my $59/mo rate reduced. No can do. I mentioned ATT UVerse is in town now, and told them I was considering switching.

They offered their top tier service to me for the same cost instead.

Went from 6mbps to 16mbps DL and 512kbps to 2mbps UL.

I can DL a 5GB linux ISO in about 30 minutes.
