Interesting to read the previous posts, hhhmmm I noticed that no one mentioned the Safeway stores? Very interestingly, I met the Manager of Pacific Fresh Seafoods company today, what a great guy.. What I found most interesting was that Raley's, Bel-Air, Safeway as well as Winco all get their fish and shell fish from his company in west Sacramento !! I don't know about you, but have you ever been into the seafood dept at Safeway or Raley's in town? HHMMM and you won't buy meat at Winco? I might have to reserve some sort of disbelief in what might be a reaction to common sense.. The many ! times I have visited both the Safeway and Raley's locations, I can tell you one thing for sure... If it smells like fish... DON"T BUY IT !!! I for one , have never experienced this with Winco,,, you know why? they turn it over too fast... supply and demand... How can you explain to me or any other astute person, how can Raley's charge during a SALE! $6.98 a pound for Talapia, when Winco charges $3.98 a pound for the VERY same product bought from the SAME supplier? Well I was told why, but if you want to spend more money for the same product... feel free to go ahead..

Typical Folsom snob attitude from those who won't shop at a store that doesn't have wood flooring and 2x the prices. Fools. It's an hour at a grocery store and you save tons of $$. I guess CV still has a decent enough job not to have to shop around...yet.

I do hit the Safeway on Prairie City as it's the next-closest store to me after Winco. I do buy fish from Winco, I just ask when they got their last delivery and buy only that day or the day after. It's fine stuff.

I do agree with you cw68, because both Winco and Safeway are very close to where I live, but I for one will ask the person at the fish counter at Winco to select the fish I might buy? and let me smell it first... I know that might appear to many to be (snobbish) but if it doesn't pass my smell test, it sure as hell won't pass my taste test!! hehe. oohh and on different note, the employees of Winco are not affiliated with any unions... like them or not, that is up to you. But the folks that work at Winco are shareholders... perhaps you did not know that... It is an employee owned company.. unusual... yes... but if it works.. well it works... I guess.

So as a closing note will say.. Live, Laugh, love and eat well!!! because we live in the greatest Country in the World !!!

Here's my take on the specific topic of seafood. This is my opinion only.

I have effectively stopped eating seafood. I haven't found any of the local stores to have seafood of sufficient quality to purchase, at least not consistently.

I'm limiting myself to seafood based on watch lists published by the likes of Monterey Bay Aquarium, etc. And yes, that means I no longer patronize sushi bars; but in this area, I stopped anyway so it wasn't a big loss. But I still mostly refrain even when I'm in the Bay Area (will follow but never suggest; and only to those with Japanese trained chefs -- again personal choice so don't flame me on this).

So, watch lists takes out some of the seafood selection. After that, I haven't seen consistency in quality; not like I'd expect from other supermarkets I've patronized when living elsewhere (ie - Draeger's Andronico's, Whole Foods).

I do buy wild salmon - it's one of my favorite times of the year. Copper River. Stikine River. Oh baby yea. And I like buying live crab at the Chinese supermarket.

So, in summary -- not much seafood for me anymore. Can't find the selection or quality that meets my needs around here.

So how do you tell if the seafood is fresh (other than if it smells fishy don't buy it)?

Have you tried some of the frozen fish at Trader Joe's. I like their frozen salmon and ahi.

I'll take Raley's and its higher prices/quality over filthy Winco and its bedraggled meth-addicted shoppers buying gray meat and grade C milk.

That my friend, is why we shop at Winco - we're no dummies, and we know good quality and good prices are a priority over labels.

You can not beat Winco on can food prices - chicken broth, stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce! Why would you buy it anywhere else (unless you are in an emergency situation!). I like their prices on bagels, bread, tortillas and cheese too! I buy all my meat in bulk at Sam's club and divide it up to smaller portions. I try to do my best to watch our food money. We go out to dinner maybe every 2 months as a treat.

I was just at Winco on Sunday and did some stocking up... Spent only $100.00 It will keep us going for 2 to 4 months.. There are only 2 of us so a litte goes a long way...

Did anyone else see that all their sprinkler were going in the rain on Sunday??? Water running down the street and in the parking lot. It seemed like a malfunction but I didn't stop to ask.. I know I should have but I didn't....

What's next, agreeing with Naga?!?

Maybe it is a twilight zone thing because I have agreed with Naga's in the past few months.

I'm right with you there! My husband was checking out some stuff next to the fish counter and I was like - wow - it deosn't smell fishy!!!! That means that things are really fresh! I mentioned it to my hubby and he was pretty impressed too. So, we went ahead and got some Talapia and had it for dinner that night! Very good!

I watched a show on tv (dirty jobs? something like that) that showed talapia as the fish that ate the waste of the bass to get big enough to be sold at the store- after that I will never try talapia.
We get our fish from family in Alaska. Whenever they come down to visit, which is a couple times a year, they bring a tons of amazing fish that they just caught and had cut and frozen into individual portions. yumm.

and yes I know that all fish probably eat waste of some sort- but after seeing it on tv it makes talapia very un-appealing. Doesn't it not have much flavor anyway???

I worked with a guy who used to be a chef at one of the higher end restaurants in this area, and when he first started out in that job, one of his duties was to clean the fresh halibut as it came in. In case anyone doesn't know, they're the great big flat ones with eyes one one side of their body that move along the bottom of the ocean. He said they'd come in all covered in worms and parasites. Needless to say he was off of them for a long time. I can't help but still think they're delicious, but I have a feeling most things are pretty "gross" in their natural state.

Historically, I've bought seafood from the local markets and it's been hit or miss. So, between the watch list restrictions and hit/miss quality, it's just easier to give up the seafood (at least for now). The only thing that has been a consistent hit is the Copper River / Stikine River wild salmon when in season. And the live crab / fresh whole fish (you can check the gills and the eyes) at the Chinese market (but I'm very selective here).

I don't want to offend, it's my personal taste. But no Mikuni's for me and definitely no Kirala. There is one Japanese mom&pop sushi place off Madison(?) that seems pretty good. But I keep forgetting where it is and it's too inconvenient anyway -- I never really go to that area. I go to Japan about once or twice a year -- that's usually enough of a sushi spurge for me.

I've tried the fish at Trader Joe's. It's okay but I don't miss it. And sometimes I worry about the country of origin. Yea, it's supposed to USDA approved or whatever. But they don't really instill a lot of confidence these days.

I love seafood and prefer it to pork (except BBQ Baby Back) or chicken (not beef or lamb) but I'm okay with my choices for now.
