This is very scary and I guess we have to see what happens. Why the government does not do anything about animals and testing is beyond me. But now we have a huge problem, so I guess we will see who makes it thru this horrible chain of events.

What do you mean about animals?

I mean the horrible way they have them all put in pens and the mistreatment of them.
This has been going on for years. Now the pigs are getting flu from the humans in certain countries. This really should be evaluated.

I'm more afraid of a hastily produced vaccine for this thing. The one in 1976's versions of the Swine Flu ended up causing more problems than it solved.

This is a very big concern. I think the government knows, but there is a lot of money being put out there for this vaccination. I do not know if 2 mos of testing is enough. It is like Gardasil. There have been deaths and many many lawsuits due to adverse reactions. This one should be pulled in my opinion. Again, there was just not enough research done on this one either. They just thru it out there but still say it is safe.

This is a very hard call.

If swine flu gets worse in the fall (as many predict), of course we will hope for a vaccine. Now they are saying they may start vaccinating school age kids, because that age group is particularly susceptible to swine flu.

There is just no time to wait and see the long-term effects of the vaccine -- what happens in 6 months, one year, twenty years...

It is a massive gamble.

Yes, I totally agree. I wont even let my husband get it and he is over 55. I understand this is really severe, but when I went thru the 1957 Hong Kong Flu I was only 6 and no vaccination for us. I am still here as our my siblings. This is a huge decision for sure

I think that Folsom should wait another month and let this kind of die down. But i have nothing to say about this. Just my opinion.

I'm fine with moving it back to after Labor Day. Wish they never changed it.

We are fairly new to the area and our schools all started after Labor Day. I sure hope the Folsom School Board has given this some decision. One month may prevent school closures in the following months. It is a hard, no one expected this.

CALIFORNIA: 2469 cases 287 hospitalizations 32 deaths

These are the current numbers from the Cal. Dept. of Public Health.

Hospitalization rate is about 10%. Death rate is about 1.5%. Of course, there could be lots of cases where the person never even went and got tested because the symptoms were so mild... let's hope so.

Personally, I find the above numbers concerning. We certainly don't have hospital beds to accomodate even 1% of the kids in Folsom (if the virus starts flying around the schools), let alone 10%. Of course, not all the kids would get it at the exact same time, but we also don't know how long the typical hospitalization is.

Here's an article about trying to stop swine flu at summer camps:

http://www.slate.com/id/2222549/

Apparently, this is a significant problem at east coast summer camps. The physician-author opines that the way to address this is to quickly get all the kids on Tamiflu once one kid gets confirmed for swine flu. It seemed to work in this case... but I'm sure the CDC would worry about resistance...

Yikes. It could be a scary fall. Especially for someone like me -- I have a tremendous fear of hospitals... even if everything turns out fine in the end, the thought of me or a loved one being in a hospital absolutely terrifies me.

No one knows yet, but the media sure has it going and there is evidence out there for sure.
Lets hope it does not get to that point. I hope Mercy Folsom is gearing up like other hospitals. But we are in California and Arnold is laying off Health Service Workers and we cannot pay our bills. So we are in good shape. I personally have been in Mercy Folsom twice, and had to wait hours, one time could have been a matter of life or death. It was a perforated colon. This was back in March and flu was around and they were busy for sure. they did not even offer me a blanket as I had a 103 temp due to the infection. All I know is I have worked in hospitals and they are all the same. I hope this dies down and just does it spread and be done with the whole thing. My kids told me to stay off the internet. I am just making myself sick and stressed. Why cant we ever hear of happy things!!!!!

Just an update with 23 deaths in the last week in California alone, does anyone know if they know of anyone who has h1n1 here? Just curious and scared.

Yes I know of a family from school who had a daughter with the illness. She was very ill for a while but is fine now. She is a Folsom resident.

Lately there has been a flu or something like it going around. It lasts for three to four days with a lot of aching and weakness.
My son had it last weekend and mostly slept, took Tylenol and it pasted. Odd it being in the middle of summer.

I think it was swine flu, but he didn't go to the doctor and wasn't tested. What else could it be, having those symptoms in the middle of summer? He didn't have much congestion, as with a common cold.

Anybody else hear about, or get this?
