49ers!

A couple of things to keep in mind, the game was pretty much over and no doubt the Texans were playing a different strategy. The Texans weren't prepared for the spread offense and they were playing a bend but don't break defense, so it was a good time to make this switch.
The change to Smith and the spread offense, did give us fans a glimpse at what could be. I don't know if teams can change their identity week to week from a run smash mouth style to a wide open spread style?
It will be interesting to watch the evoulution going forward, but the 9ers record is about where I though they would be right now.

I was thinking along those lines, wondering if their success was based on the fact that Houston was not prepared for such an offense, and that the Colts have a week to do so.
Also, there could be the belief that Smith felt he had nothing to lose, so was much more together than if he had started the game.
We'll see.

But take heart 49er fans, at least they aren't as bad as the Raiders...or the Kings.

The main question is how much of an improvement (record wise) will they be come week 16/17 over 2008 season?

Singletary makes switch, names Smith QB starter
Mike Singletary says he doesn't want "a flavor-of-the-month-type thing" at quarterback. But he has decided to switch toppings. As expected, Singletary named Alex Smith the quarterback starter for Sunday's game in Indianapolis, the 49ers' second straight against an AFC South opponent that can put a lot of points on the board.
Another great day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

Good observation. I agree and am a big fan. Arizona looks like the team to beat in the NFC west right now. The niners schedule gets easy during weeks 16 and 17, but it's going to be tough to win the division.
Not sold on Alex Smith. He entered the game with a nothing to lose attitude. We shall see if he can be as productive on Sunday.
Anyone else notice that the niners still are terrible at clock management? They can't seem to get the offensive plays called in a timely manner. The QB has a hard time reading the D when their is only 3-4 seconds on the play clock when they get to the line.

Its not uncommon to have your back QB struggle with the playclock. The team should be at the line with 10 seconds left to snap the ball so the QB can look over the D to change the play if need be.
Maybe with time Smith will get better running the team. Smith did look good, he made the right reads and threw the ball well.
Indy's D will be a lot more complicated, so it will be a better measuring stick.
All in all I think the 9ers are going in the right direction. If they can expand on their passing game to stretch the D, it will open up the running game.
I still think the 9ers will win more games in Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec of 09 than the Kings will.

The playclock and clock management issues have been going on since Nolan was coach. This problem has been ongoing for the past 3-4 seasons.

This is true.
I remember how the Walsh-coached teams were always so well prepared that they knew what to do in each situation. They knew that if this happens on the play, we'll do this. If that happens on the play, we'll do this. They guys were trained to be alert and think ahead.
It's kind of like a baseball player knowing where to go with the ball depending on what side of the infield the ball is hit, behind or ahead of the runner, fly or grounder, etc.
The 49ers, all to often, seem to complete a play and then go, 'now what?'
I also remember how the Madden-coached teams would hustle back to the huddle because it gave their quarterback more time to prepare and because it demoralized the opposing team to see these guys full of energy while they were sucking wind.

On one hand, I admire their attempt to win the game, yet it was these 2 incompletions that gave the ball back to Seattle. Seattle only needed 20 yards to try a long FG to win the game and had 2 of their T.O. left.
I thought it was poor strategy to give the ball back To Seattle that late in the game when Seattle had Field Position.
Granted if the 49ers would have scored the coach would have looked great, but it seemed to me at the time, the smart play would have been to run the ball for a first down and/or at least make Seattle use their T.O. to stop the clock.
I did say this to the TV while watching the game, but I guess Singletary didn't hear me.
