We finally got a chance to try it out a couple weeks ago. The food was excellent and the prices were not too bad for what you get. We started with a south-western egg roll appetizer. It was very good. I ordered the pork chop, which was a two-bone cut that I'd guess was at least 2 inches thick and was perfectly cooked with a very tasty glaze on it. My wife had a macadamia nut fish (probably halibut, but I can't remember exactly) that was very good. It came with coconut rice. That was some dang yummy rice! I couldn't stop myself from polishing-off the rest of it when she was done.

My main complaints are the atmosphere. It was very dark in there with only this amber spotlight shining on the middle of the table. It would shine in my eyes if I leaned in toward the table. The amber color only focused on the table along with everything else being so dark just made it difficult to see anything and was a distraction. Especially when the person you are talking to moves a little and shifts from being in the spot light to being back in the dark. It was all just too annoying and an unnecessary gimmick.

I also thought that the smoke from the grill was way too heavy in the room. It's nice to have a little smokey smell in the room, but my eyes shouldn't sting! After leaving, our clothes reeked like we had been sitting around a campfire.

I'd still happily return... and hope that they change the lighting in the future and vent the smoke a little better. Pretty please?!

Haven't been back.

Same here. I always hesitate to say something negative, but in the hopes they can improve...

Seriously, the smell in the restaurant was off-putting.
The food was overpriced for what it was. It's Land "Ocean" so more seafood offerings would be nice. When you advertise that something has mango/advocado salsa, more than a teaspoon on some dehydrated carrots is expected.
The lighting is very annoying.

On the positive side, the service was excellent.

My wife and I have not been there yet. We normally go to BJ's next door.

Should we go and check it out, or not??

Also should I print all this chat and take it to the manager?
Do you think it might wake them up a bit?

Stick with BJs, lots cheaper, nearly just as good and they have plenty of lighting

I can't find my review of this place - I did one right after they opened. I agree with the lighting / atmosphere. Some people obviously like it - just different tastes I guess. I really thought the food was overpriced - my guess is that if people like the atmosphere enough - they'll pay a little more for food. If you don't care for the atmosphere - the food will probably seem overpriced . . . .

Based on what I've read - I'm not likely to go back. Everyone has different expectations and "likes" for restaurants - this place fits the bill for quite a few people - just not me . . .

You can go a step further and go for Denny's, if cheap and bright are what you're loooking for.

To me, BJ's is on par with the Buffalo Wing Joint, Chilis, Black Angus and the like.

Land Ocean is closer to Sutter Street Steakhouse, Ruth's Chris and Crush 29.

My wife and I often go for appetizers at the bar, often during happy hour, rather than full-blown meals. We get good food, good prices and good service. It's easy to get carried away and spend too much, though.

I think you should go and form your own opinion. Just don't expect it to be BJ's. Bad comparison. Land Ocean is a step above and I agree with Steve's comment. My husband and I either consider it a nice, upscale, night out, or if we are not up for the full deal, we do lunch or happy hour.

So far, we have yet to have a bad meal there. I like Land Ocean and am glad we have it in Folsom.

Well, if we want a good meal, we will go to Scott's Seafood Grill & Bar
in Folsom. We have always had great meals and service there.

Birthdays, Anniversaries, etc.

Their entree prices range from $16 to $28, the portions were good, and the dishes were definitely well above your typical chain restaurants both in quality and flavor. I'd put them in the class of places like Scott's, Esquire Grill and McCormick & Schmick's (although they are a chain), not BJ's.

So IMHO, I'd say that the prices were well within reason for that class of restaurant. (Relative to the other options, that is. They've all gotten expensive enough that we don't go to these places as much as we did years ago.)

I would agree, except my rockfish (the special) was overcooked and the rice was the same I would expect from BJ's, and the garnish sauce almost nonexistent. The wedge salad cost $1.50 more than BJ's and was similar. The wine (Zinfandel) was from a bottle that had been opened quite a while ago. The bread didn't arrive until after the salads were served.

I've been to Scott's and Esquire Grill. It wasn't the same experience. Maybe it was just a bad night for them. There were mixed reviews from the rest of the table. Two had sandwiches - tri tip and French dip, which they liked, but weren't gaga over. For a steak place, the meat was fatty. The other diner had the wood-smoked chicken, which looked amazing and smelled good. If I were to order over again, I think that would have been my choice.

I can have amnesia about slow service if the food arrives and is amazing, but this wasn't the case I'm sad to say. The time before we had been for lunch and thought the amber spotlight annnoyance was specific to the booth we had, but it wasn't. The Ahi salad I had was okay, but I'd be just as happy other places at a lower cost.

I really wanted to like it. The decor is beautiful. I even like the cow picture. Our servers were excellent. I will agree the portions were large. I just see a lot of room for improvement.

Finally made it by for happy hour (Mon thru Fri 3pm-7pm...Sat/Sun 11:30am-5pm) on Thursday after setting up the Folsom Quilt Show. Like the way you can order a certain number of prawns, oysters, mini wellingtons or sliders which allows for a great sample opportunity! Beautiful interior and wonderful service...Went back for lunch the next day and had the island chicken salad which was very good...will be returning!
