If you have the time and want to see something we haven't seen for a while, walk, jog, or bicycle over the dam trail where more spillways will open today.
any idea what time they will open ? We do no want to be there too early...

Another great day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

Sorry, folsom500, but I think they opened more at 7:00 this morning. It will still be quite a sight. I would go, but I have to get to work soon.

I used the wrong terminology. I should have said more floodgates will be open, not spillway. The floodgates haven't been opened since 2012. They already had three open, but they were supposed to open more this morning.

I got there around 11am and it was fantastic... 5 gates open -- Flow was increased from 8000 cfs at 8am to around 14,000 cfs at 11am.
Film and pics soon...
Lake level 439 ft- 702900 ac ft
I am still upset that we are dumping too much out but will see what happens in the next 2 weeks...

Thanks so much for sharing, folsom500, especially video with sound, for those of us that can't make it up there! When you see the water rushing down below the gates into that narrow channel it makes you wonder how that will work if they ever had to open the new emergency spillway???
I feel the same way about the water being released, but might as well enjoy the sight.
Like bordercolliefan mentions, it would be nice if Folsom had a way to store their annual allotment and take it out now instead of watching it wash away.
In the meantime, I am taking advantage of this period where the lake can't be allowed to get too full. During those dry weeks we had I did home maintenance things we have been prohibited from doing or tried not to do because of the drought, things like pressure-washing the driveway and house, planting to replace things lost in the drought.

I wish we could build another reservoir so we could keep all the released water. I guess there is no place for one now that the area is so built out?
That would be a better project for S50 than new homes.

Too bad we don't have much of a water table that we could do aquifer recharge: https://www.epa.gov/...ge-and-recovery
Maybe build more water towers?

Yep, only in California do they embrace the worst possible alternative: "Hey, let's just waste perfectly good, fresh water and send it out to the Delta and out into the ocean!! Yeah, that's the ticket!"
These fools have had years to create more water storage here. What have they done? NOTHING! Money shouldn't be an issue, given the high taxes and fees we pay on damn near everything we do. If we wasted money like these Govt clowns do, we'd all be homeless.

Not that exciting if you've grown up seeing Niagara Falls. Not only do they create and harness the power, the water is also used as a natural resource. If you want to see what real lakes look like, take a trip back East and check out the Great Lakes. The point being made, is that they don't waste the water.

Its not money rather the environmental natzi's in this state that have held back building of any reservoirs for the last 40+yrs.

Remember last summer, when people were worried that the taps would run dry by October?
Quite the opposite - now the "taps" are wide open at the dam.

KPBS has an interesting question for Californians?
Should Reclamation be using WEATHER FORECASTs, instead of relying upon 65 year old rule-book?
Check it out:

My vote is for using WEATHER FORECASTs, and stop draining down Folsom Reservoir NOW.

Groan, Nestle is allowed to keep taking our water to bottle and sell.
Stupid, US Forest Service -- 5 more years of selling public water for a profit?????
http://www.nwaonline.../?news-national
http://www.fs.fed.us...ency/contact-us
Last fall, three environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit demanding that the Forest Service halt Nestle's water withdrawals until a special-use permit is issued.
The forest supervisor is proposing to grant Nestle the special permit but require the company to conduct studies and modify operations if the studies show that water extraction is harming the environment. The Forest Service is accepting public comment on the proposal until May 2.
