Here's a good article about minarets, their significance in Islam, and various designs:

Thanks, Terry.

Has anyone seen a drawing of the proposed design?

Good. I drive by there every morning on my way to work. I will be on the lookout for young middle-eastern men with large jackets and/or backpacks......or would that be profiling?

the calls to prayer will only be on holidays a few times a year... they won't have it all the time as it is against city noise ordinances.

I think you'd have to go to City Planning and look at the plans that were submitted and approved. Maybe the Telegraph will print the plans in a future edition.

Does the city noise ordinance trump freedom of religion? I too thought I saw a lawsuit somewhere in the midwest regarding the call to prayer. I just can't find it.

Isn't the Bible full of references to murder? I'll never claim to be an expert on the Bible, but in a cursory online search I found references to murder in the Bible for working on the Sabbath, cursing your parents, not being a virgin on your wedding night, being gay, etc. If it's generally understood that not every word in the Bible is to be taken literally, why is it so hard to understand that not every word in the Koran is taken literally?

Also its location is at the bottom of a hill...

Is it the vacant lot at the corner of Levy and Sibley, on the right-hand side as you travel from Blue Ravine toward Glenn?

That is an extremely hilly lot. The 31,000 sq ft. proposed building would undoubtedly take up most of the lot -- which makes me think it will be built on, or into, the hill. With a 70 ft. minaret on top of a (at least partial) hill, this will probably be the tallest and most visible object on the Folsom skyline, possibly visible for miles around.

I'm still not sure what I think of the plan. It could be a unique and attractive addition to Folsom, similar to a beautiful church. I hope the City Council holds the mosque's members to high standards in terms of creating a building that integrates with Folsom -- nothing too wierd-looking.

Yes.

I highly doubt that the Folsom Islamists want to piss off the entire city by broadcasting annoying chants 5 times a day. I'm sure they realize that just building a mosque is going to draw a lot of ire.

The first amendment prevents Congress from making laws regarding an establishment of religion. It does not prevent state and local governments from doing so.

That's my point; it is "radical Islam" and not Islam that is taking these phrases literally. People are knocking Islam and they're quoting the Koran as justification for knocking Islam. If there were a radical group of Christians quoting murderous clauses from the Bible and using them to justify murderous acts, would others be justified in knocking Christianity as a whole and knocking the Bible as a whole?
