elvisff,

I do have a good idea of how much drug and alcohol problems there are among children in Folsom- notice I did say children... and also note that I said that Folsom does not have as much problems COMPARED TO OUR NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES. Not saying that we shouldn't address these problems, in fact we must. I am only saying that we should be thankful that our community has maintained a rather clean, family-friendly envoronmant.

3 cheers for Folsom

We have sleaze, porn, homelessness, racism, drug and alcohol problems with kids, but as long as the tourists don't wander into a store that has sex toys in the back, they'll think we're better than that.
[B] Stevethedad,
contrary to what you stated, Folsom children do not have problems with sleaze, porn, homelessness, racism, drugs, and alcohol as compared to most of our neighboring communities. You should be grateful that Folsom is such an ideal community to raise children.
You say that there are rampant problems with the children of Folsom that need to be addressed, but you have no interest in adressing the potential problems brought on by this store. The tourists wandering into the back room and thinking less of us is not a concern here. It is about preserving our historic community and our wonderful town.

I can understand how you would misunderstand what I wrote. I should have put an 'and we have', as in "We have sleaze, porn, homelessness, racism, AND WE HAVE drug and alcohol problems with kids..."

I did not mean to imply that porn and homelessness were problems with Folsom kids. I can assure you, however, without a doubt, that Folsom kids use drugs as often as kids in other communities. There are facts and stats to prove it.

The main difference is that there is less petty crime and violence. Just as much drug abuse, though.

I have been deeply concerned and deeply involved in the efforts to combat the problem here in town.

I can only assume that you are yet another person who decided not to go to the Healthy Families Forum. If you'd been there, you'd have heard stats, along with presentations and testimony from cops, teachers, parents, kids, former addicts, all from right here in our ideal community, talking about what they see EVERY DAY, right here in Folsom.

Kids are getting expelled from school, failing, fighting, stealing, dropping out, becoming anti-social, and overdosing, while we are worried about what, a lingerie store that will carry adult novelties in the back room?

No child has ever been harmed by seeing a thong or a vibrator, and they wouldn't be allowed in the back room anyway, but kids are ruining their lives daily with drugs and alcohol.

It's interesting to note that often parents in of Folsom think that drugs are more rampant, available, and even brought here from communities such as Rancho Cordova and Citrus Heights. They cite poverty, permissiveness, idle time, parents who are neglectful, and parents who are too busy trying to make ends meet.

I speak to parents from Rancho, and they blame Folsom. They cite wealth, permissiveness, idle time, parents who are negectful, etc.

Both side are right. These problems exist in both communities. Rancho and Citrus Heights cops bust Foslom kids, and Folsom cops bust Rancho and Citrus Heights kids.

Angela De Rae, Director of People Reaching Out, gives a great presentation (those at the Healthy Families Forum saw it) where she talks stats on kids and drugs.
Among the most common factors listed by drug abusing teens: Boredom, time, and somebody having $25.

So Locke, although I love this community, I am quite aware, and those of us involved with the Healthy Families Forum try to make the rest of Folsom aware, of the severity of drug and alcohol abuse amoung our kids. Not many listen.

It's not that I have no interest in addressing potential problems caused by Ms. Teaz, it's that I can't think of ONE!

Border, you do have a legitimate concern. We don't want to desensitize our kids, nor make them think that drug abuse is normal, expected or accepted.

The fact is that they will find out about drugs without parents or schools ever mentioning them.

Drug and alcohol use and abuse is evident on the sitcoms and videos they watch, the songs they hear and sing. It's talked about on the net. They have friends who have older brothers and sisters.

Shouldn't they hear what their parents think?

Hey all,

Well this is my first post, and I would like to say I have kept track of everything said so far, however there are like 48 pages of posts! Anyways, I just thought that I might impart a unique view on the subject, for I am only 22 and grew up around Folsom and that the owner of the store is my cousin, Sam.
I can honestly say that my cousin Sam has been one of my role models growing up. The guy is very smart, very helpful and just a downright nice guy. I know that in the past weeks he and his wife have been working very, very hard to open the store and please everyone. I can't imagine how stressed he is. My point is that when he opens the store he has the inteligence, drive and, integrity to run a store that Folsom can be proud of.
Another point that I would like to make about the youth of Folsom. I, not long ago, would wander down the bike trails by rainbow bridge, hang out with friends at the lake or drive to a folsom party. The youth nowadays are exposed to more than I think adults want to admit, or likely know about. By the time kids hit highschool, innocence reguarding to sexuality, is gone. And trust me after all this debate you better believe that whoever is running the store is going to keep a close eye on who wanders in. As far as younger kids going into the store, if the parents are concered they can keep them out, and I know that anyone younger than a highschooler is going to be very noticeable going into the shop alone. The store in my opinion looks great and I think that everyone will be presently suprised at how well it turned out. I am hoping that they can have their grand opening on time. I sure will be there and I hope that everyone here can come and see for themselves what 43 pages of posts is trying to label.

Thanks for reading,
Ryan

Ryan,

You brought up an excellent point. There has been a lot of talk, by parents, about their children's exposure to a lingerie shop, that might also sell sex novelties.

Your post made me think back to when I was a young child. I must say that I wasn't even aware of what a lingerie shop was, let alone aware of what the specifics of their inventory might have been. I could have walked by it a dozen times and probably not given it much thought.

Perhaps my mother might have been embarrassed, but I suppose that would have been her problem. It certainly wouldn't have been mine.

Thanks for the perspective.

Well, now that it's open, what do we think?

I went down there last night to see what it was all about...I suppose it's a little racier than I expected, but nowhere near the "porn shop" fears of some. I guess I expected a more "boutique" style high end lingerie shop...and while I did find a negligee I liked (and bought) most of the stuff was a bit more Fredericks of Hollywood than I'd hoped for. The back room? Standard issue "edible" creams and body oils, vibrators of many styles, even one looking like a bathtub rubber ducky and a few leather items of indeterminable use. Nothing to get your proverbial knickers-in-a-twist about.

The sales staff was comprised of young tightly corseted girls which added a certain "cheese" factor I thought.

Nonetheless, all the advance publicity served them well as the local TV news was covering it, interviewing customers and staff, and the Zone, local radio station, was also doing a remote broadcast.

Does it fit in with the local flavor of Sutter St? Not by a long shot...but will it help revitalize the district and bring in a new variety of specialty stores? Hopefully.

Sorry I missed you. I was there last night as well. I saw it a little differently, in that I thought the stuff was 'high-end' (maybe I'm just cheap). My daughter bought a corset at a shop in the mall (gasp!) for about $30. The cheapest ones I saw at Ms. Teaz were $60, and they go to over $300!

It was what I expected, otherwise. The back room was much ado about nothing. You described it well. I'd add that they have books like, "What women want", and "How to be a great lover", a few board games, and gift bags. Pretty tame compared to what they were accused of.

I've never seen so many people on Sutter, except for fairs and the Thursday night market.

I went into a great art gallery a few doors down. I met the owner. She told me she'd owned the place for 1 year, but it had been there for 8. I'd never noticed it. We talked for a while, and she invited me back to check out more stuff she had in the back room, by I think, David Christensen. She told me to come back when it 'isn't so crazy'. The point? She believed all of the new foot traffic was due to the opening of Ms. Teaz.

I went to Chicago Fire pizza, and there was a young lady waiting for a table, holding a bag of stuff she'd bought at Ms. Teaz.

So, this little boutique is proving to be harmless, and in fact, for at least one day, beneficial to the sutter street.

You're right Steve, in that it ain't cheap...so in that respect, it is "high-end"...but style-wise it tends towards the "saucy" side of alluring. While I was trying on some less revealing nighties, the women in the next dressing room, of an advanced age, was being laced into a leather corset. Definitely not the lingerie shop at Macy's! Plus the shoes in the back were of the 5 inch spike healed, wear em to bed but not to walk variety...and don't forget the small jewelry display of Playboy signature items.

So, while it's fun, and I support them...I doubt I'll spend much money in there. But it's a hoot for Sutter St.

I saw the Saturday night local news coverage on Channel 10. The reporter had a slip of the tongue, and referred to the shop as "Ms. Sleaze....uh excuse, me...Ms. Teaz." joker.gif joker.gif joker.gif

Steve, much ado about nothing maybe because of the ado??

Did you buy some fancy things for your wife yet?

As I said in my latest blog http://www.myfolsom.com/steveheard

Ms. Teaz' owners, Sam and Misty Dufour can now say, "See. We told you we weren't going to sell porn".

Some others will say, "See! Through our efforts, we prevented them from selling porn!"

While others will say, "We'll be watching, and as soon as they bring in the porn, we've got 'em".

They are selling exactly what they said they were going to from the very start, and aren't selling any of filth or perversion their opponents accused them of peddling.

So no, I don't think it's because of the ado, it's because of their business plan.

As for your other question, I took my wife to the grand opening, and she only found one thing she really liked, a kind of negigee thingy. I offered to buy it, but she declined. Maybe for Christmas. Don't tell her.
