The grocery store was the Royal Market and the chinese restaurant was the China Dragon (with the red doors, and the owner's name was Steve!). They had the very best chinese food.

And yes, I remember the Gas Farm, and Yukon Restaurant, and the roller rink all in that same area.

Excellent memory, Terry.

Was the Gas Farm where Pioneer Chicken was before it was Pioneer Chicken? That was before my time here.

I miss two fine dining establishments in Folsom. Christophes and Savoy 614.(Where Chicago Fire is now).
My first recollection of Thrifty Ice cream was as a youngster in SoCal eating a three scoop ice cream cone for 15 cents. Yup 5 cents a scoop back in 1973.

Oh that's neat, I didn't even know there was more than one Christophe's. There was one in Sausalito (I lived there when I was really little, and have a vague memory of seeing it but don't think I ever had food there).

Loosely related (and this is true anywhere you go), but does anyone miss the old logos that places used to have? Like the Burger King or Taco Bell lettering, before they decided to modernize them (I think about 1999/2000). That seems insignificant, but it still gives me a nice feeling.

How about fishing in the dredge ponds by Joe & Dodie's?? They were on Folsom Blvd where the sake plant is now. I think there is a small daycare/school where Joe & Dodie's used to be. It was an easy and safe bike ride from Valley Pines to go fishing there, hardly ever saw a car. I got my driver's license at the DMV when it used to be open only every Wednesday at the Elk's Lodge off Montrose. Freshman football team in 1977 went undefeated with Coach Turner calling the shots. The only fast food was The Big Dip and it was a treat to go there and have a chocolate covered ice cream!! The mechanical pinball there cost a nickel to play and it would go on for hours if you had any game at all. Baldwin Dam and Valley Pines was "new Folsom" back then. Ah, the good ol' days.

I moved to folsom in 1989 when I was 4. We moved into the houseing devlopment right before briggs ranch got started, around the willow creek area. I used to spend my summers walking in field behind my house, building tree forts with very very questionable quality wood that we found. I remember riding my bike all the way down to the river, the area right below city park where all the rocks were.

I learned to swim at the pool at the old high school.

Im proud to say that my Senior class was the last Senior class at Folsom High School that played our football games at the old high school. That high school had character! I remember climbing up on the lockers in the locker room with the rest of the guys and listening to music before games freshman year. We were also the last class at Folsom High to actually attend the old high school and have those wonderful lockers they provided. Back when our school uniforms were red instead of blue.

I remember the concerts at city park they had during the summers, my friends and i would trek down to the river and go fishing. Ill never forget pulling out a huge trout and walking back to the park with that fish on a stringer and having half the crowd as me where I caught the fish (as if they forgot we have two lakes and a river in town.)

I remember when making the youth football team was a big deal. I don't know if they still do it but they used to have a parade every year for opening day at little leauge and we would all pile on to trucks and decorate them up with our team colors.

I also remember when not every child had a fing cell phone before they were 12.

^ Good stuff Ricky, we're almost the same age, and I bet it's actually even more nostalgic to you since that's basically your first memories (I was already 9 in '90 when I moved to town). I probably would've gone to that high school too, if I'd stayed around longer. Speaking of that, I was sad to see on Google Earth that my middle school in Orangevale (La Vista) got torn down and there's new houses on that spot. That has a way of making the time seem longer ago.

P.S. I know what you mean about cell phones, lol. I can't complain since I have one too, but at least it wasn't all over the place before about '04/05, especially with kids (they had pagers back then sometimes, but that wasn't as obnoxious).

Oh nice, I liked getting stuff that way better - makes it feel like you earned it.

My first cell was in 1999, my mom's old one. It was basic and already old looking but I didn't care, I just needed it for quick calls. Even now I only use it for that and sporadic texting.

Willie's Burgers - not really old but I miss it!

Willies's was good, I remember John. But does anyone remember Chubby's in the old Model Pharmacy center? It wasn't really fabulous, but I miss it for some reason, they had a unique burger.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body,
but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
"Wow! What a Ride!"

Awww, this is making me miss Folsom!! We are in Denver for a few years, but I was born and raised in Folsom, and are moving back in a few years. I have fabulous memories of my hometown.

I miss Jack Kipp too, he was my godfather and next door neighbor. The stories he would tell, and the things he would say, will forever be with me. He was smart, hilarious, and so loving- I miss him so much.

The China Dragon was owned by the Lam's, their daughter was in my class at St. John's, and then later at FJHS and FHS. I loved eating there, but I also loved, and still do love, eating at Hop Sing's. Bill and his wife are so kind and he remembers us from when we were kids.

I loved Rainbow Ice, the shaved ice place on the south side of Rainbow Bridge, just above the Old Powerhouse. It was such a treat to get to go there on a hot summer day.

And buying candy at Peppermint Patty's was a child's dream!

And the Yukon!!! YUM!!

Partying in high school at the Overlook.

One of the things I miss the most though, are our "Sunday drives" in the "country"....basically driving down the dirt road that is now Blue Ravine, all the way to the Junior High, which is now Folsom Middle School, then driving out to Scott Road and back.

There are still some great things that are still done now, that were also done back in the day: Mrs. Jones decorating for Halloween and dressing up as a witch for the kids to come and see, concerts in the park, & the rodeo and cattle drive.
