I run Vista on two machines and I like it.

Well, I guess I don't know you Carl.

And to be more specific, all of my ex-co-workers that are now engineers at Intel and have computers with Vista hate it. No one else I know is running Vista. I figure I'm at least 2 and more likely 3 more years before I upgrade my OS as I won't change the OS on my computer. Whenever i buy my next home computer is when I'll get whatever OS it comes with at that point of time. If there is more than one, then I'll have to decide which I think is safer.

OK - Not to through fuel on the fire, but it appears the Mac has many more flaws than Windows.

Also, I'm guessing you will see more and more trojans, malware, etc for the Mac.

Carl how does it appear that way? You don't see trojans, malware, etc on a Mac that's the point, I have never once had anything like that appear on my mac.

You here of a lot of people going back to XP from Vista but you don't here people going back to Tiger from Leopard, why do you think that is?

I think you may have got it all backwards. Sometimes if you run around in a circle really fast you can think your going the right way but in fact your all backwards, it's ok. Sit down drink a glass of water and then read everything again. If your still backwards I would be more than happy to help you see the difference.

A co-worker of mine was telling me of his reaction to Vista. His complaints pretty much all stemmed from it being different than XP. It was a pain to have to figure out where to find certain functionality.

My friends are complaining about how Vista goes into self-destruct mode.

Funny....I have been on XP and have never ran out of problems!(What genius ever thought that a differant log-in for every family member would be a GOOD THING! And in 2 years, no-one has been able to STOP my Office Suite from trying to install itself EVERY time we change users! hmmmm LOVE IT!!) Why would I want to switch to Vista to pop the lid on a whole new set of difficulties!

Suffice to say that if Mac was to send me a catalog, I would probably order whatever was on the cover (Like I do DELL!) I am sure I would experience some heartache with compatability, but just wrestling with iTunes is more headache than I like now. angry.gif

Okay. I guess I'm just too effing stupid to own a computer. I don't think I'll be trashing my MacBook anytime soon, though. Thanks all the same for the golden nugget of advice.

Mac people are sheep. They are only concerned with being hip and cool

Okay, since this absolutely doesn't apply to me, I guess maybe #3 doesn't either, after all.

I am about the most un-sheeplike, un-hip, un-cool person anyone would ever hope to meet (actually, whether they hoped to or not).

It seems to me that the way Mac people get put down all the time, you would be way more "sheeplike" if you were following the flock? I tend to go my own way.

1. A properly built PC will crash no more or less than a Mac.
Wrong. Windows apps leak a heckuva lot more than OSX.

2. A properly built PC requires very little to no maintenance...
The PC won't, but the OS does. Registry pollution leads to the downfall of most Windows installs

3. Anyone who thinks a PC is difficult to operate is too effing stupid to own computer.
I'm a certified UNIX admin, I've owned Mac's since System 6, and Windows since WFW, and Windows is far too convoluted for it's own good. You shouldn't need to be a regedit zen master to set a frickin' file type

4. Absolutely not... (see addendum 1)

5. Yeah, they probably hold their value more. Doesn't mean you get more back from them. That has more to do with the loyal sheep buyers than quality. A $15k Harley-Davidson is still a PoS compared to an import bike. Price does not equal quality.
All computers are disposable, imo. Nothing holds it's value when it's recycling in 3 to 5 years.

6. A properly built PC is very virus resilient. It might cost you an extra $50 but if you bought a PC you've already saved that much 10x over.
PC, mostly, Windows.. not at all. I will simply refer to the history of virii in MacOS, UNIX, and Windows as evidence of this. So many useless open services, so many exploits in integration. And the cost of a Mac is far from 10X more.

7. Mac people are sheep. They are only concerned with being hip and cool (see addendum 2).
I'm a Mac lover, and far from cool.

8. Anyone who buys a computer because "it looks cool" is a retard.
True

That's why I won't buy a Mac.

History: First computer: TRS80. Been working on PCs ever since. Had the displeasure of having to work on a Mac, never being able to let go of the effing mouse, at several different places of employment, including my current "night job" and they are no more easier or difficult to use than any modern PC. And I can get more done faster on the PC.

The mouse requirement is pretty much gone in OSX. That was a flaw for the longest time, but now Mac keyboards have Ctrl, Option, and Mac keys and enough functions to use them you're not tied to the mouse nearly as much as before. Windows, however, is tragically bad about this. That's why I'm a UNIX guy smile.gif

Take a look at the second link. The jist of the article is that as more people adopt a platform then more of the "stupid crowd" will get infected with malware. If you write walware you are not going to target a platform that has a 2% marketshare. As the mac grows in popularity so will the problems. Given the fact the Mac has something like five times the number of flaws in 2007, it just appears there is ample room for targeting the Mac.

Did you see all the problems that Leopard had when it was released? Mac enthusiasts just ignored all the problems.

By the way, if the Mac is so rock solid and virtually impervious to malware, why are there anti-virus packages for the Mac?

Mac is more than 2% currently and your right and wrong at the same time, the hackers target PC's with viruses for 2 main reasons one the majority of the population uses a PC (your right) and secondly because it's much easier to write a virus for a PC than it is for a Mac. The hacker wants results and it's much harder to get results writing viruses for a mac.

I bought leopard the day it was released, installed it and have been running it ever since. I haven't noticed any problems at all, so whatever they had to fix didn't effect my computer at all. I'm definitely not switching back to Tiger.

As for the antivirus software, it's probably an aftermarket company trying to get some sales, I don't own any virus protection on my mac and I don't need it either. If the hackers find a way to penetrate a Mac's unix platform then I will consider it. Until that day in time I'm still far ahead with a mac!

I wonder if PC's will even be around by that point? I think people will realize it by then that they have been left behind with a PC.

Carl I have used both Mac & PC you should try a New Mac and see for yourself, I think you will be surprised!

Shortcuts are you kidding me I use more shortcuts on my mac than I ever did on my PC, not to mention search features, it's so much easier to find a file on a mac, even if you deleted it.

The iPhone is the best damn phone ever made, you are just plain in denial. Not only that but it's the 1st version wait until they come out with more updates.

It's funny that you mention these two things in succession, because the iPhone HAS NO SEARCH FUNCTION!!!! ARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!! smile.gif

(I know you were talking about the MacOS and then the iPhone, but still ironic.)

Is it just me, or did the Gibson just have the weakest security layers? C'mon guys, any kid off the street can hack it? Install a freaking firewall for God's sake!
