...or a dam that possibly saved thousands of lives by holding back potentially devastating flood waters over the years (while providing an invaluable recreational asset to the region)?

And I think it generates some power, too...

From: http://cee.engr.ucda.../FolsomDam.html

Folsom Power plant is located at the base of the Folsom Dam. The water is delivered to the power plant via the three penstocks. Each penstock has a flow of 2300 cfs between the reservoir and through turbines. The water has a vertical drop of approximately 300 ft. The generators were built in 1956 and have a combined capacity of 198 Megawatts. On average, the power plant produces about 10% of the power used in Sacramento each year. (Baptista).

great idea, lets just name it "Bridge 198", That way there are no ties to anything significant or historical to Folsom and the town's history.

The Folsom Powerhouse is a good, and expanding, tourist attraction with a 'simple' name.

Why can't the Folsom Dam be one? This bridge will have an awesome view of the Dam, which protects the entire valley, generates 10% of our power, holds back the lake, previously bridged our community, is under constant terrorist threat, is currently undergoing a many-million dollar 200-year flood retrofit, and whose closing is the very REASON we built this bridge in the first place! I, for one, am far more interested in touring the many parts and history of the Dam than of remembering Johnny Cash (I've seen the movie).

I just can't understand why Folsom Dam Bridge is a bad idea?

I can, however, poke holes in the other categories:
1. Folsom Lake - Does not bridge the lake.
2. Johnny Cash - Pop star who drove through 40 years ago, not affiliated with Folsom besides guessing on our prison name.
3. Granite City - Too much like Granite Bay, but this is my second choice from a Historical nod perspective.

The two council members that selected these names are Howell and Starsky. If you don't like this then show up at the city council meeting Tuesday evening at 6:30 PM and put your 3 minutes in. This item is coming up under old business.

Business from the Floor comes prior to that so if you want to talk at that time you can too. You have 3 minutes.

I think they will open old business with a discussion prior to the 5 members of the city council voting on the name. They should give anyone that wants to talk 3 minutes prior to the vote.

Show up and make yourself heard...

Otherwise don't complain...
A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

Have you been to the Folsom Powerhouse tourist attraction yet? - and by that I don't mean the cougar den powerhouse... tongue.gif

I understand you're rationale, but for me I think this is a good opportunity for the city to market our name and bring in more tourist interest. I know you guys aren't into music as much as others, but a name such as Johnny Cash is a big draw... that's all I'm trying to say... at this stage our votes are in, its up to the city council now to make the final decision....

my thoughts...just opinions..
1. Folsom Lake - Does not bridge the lake.... and its a mediocre boring name..
2. Johnny Cash - Pop star who drove through 40 years ago, not affiliated with Folsom besides guessing on our prison name....he didn't guess the name ya dork, but he did make Folsom famous with his song and millions of people all over the world know of the town of Folsom primarily because of Johnny Cash and that song
3. Granite City - Too much like Granite Bay, but this is my second choice from a Historical nod perspective. but it's still too much like granite bay and hardly anyone would equate that name to Folsom's history.

Here's a compromise:

Put a Johnny Cash statue at the Folsom Prison side of the Folsom Dam Bridge!

Tourist draw, affiliates (at least that side of) the bridge to the star and the prison. Yet still brings attention to the main attraction, the mighty Folsom Dam.

For the record; that bridge in Austin is named the "1st Street Bridge".

+100!

I already went and put in my 2 cents a few weeks ago, if other folks feel passionately about things going on in our great city, then the only way to try and help make change is to get off the couch and go do something about it

Johnny Cash's name is proprietary to his estate... are we going to have to pay the estate to use this valuable name forever?

Just call it The Dam Bridge. I know everyone will eventually.

I'm pretty sure they are planning a stip retail center down near Briggs Ranch. Name it The Dam Center. We can call the City Council... The Dam City Council (oh wait that's been done)... The Dam City Hall and let's not forget the Dam Politictians that closed the dam road in the first place.

Anybody miss the The Dam Nursery?

I've got a club meeting to attend, so I would much rather enjoy dinner at the cheescake factory than get my 3 minutes in front of the city council. I've been to their meetings and while I spoke once before them, I've been left with the impression, they give citizens the time to talk, but they don't really put much stock in the citizens opinions and then they will do what they planned on doing.
I would rather be Backpacking

different priorities for different people.... and I disagree with your impression of the city council, I've brought a few things to them over the years and saw the opposite, course I contacted and discussed it with them more then just at the one meeting.

Priorities and obligations.
As club treasurer, I should make it a point to attend most meetings and I missed last months as it was down in Stockton, and I had just flown back from Oregon and felt to tired to be driving that far to & from the meeting.

I'm glad the council was more open to your inputs, but they really were condescendingly patronizing to me years ago, of course this was years before Andy Morin was on the board, but I know Miklos was there.

I agree with Bill Z. I've been to meetings where a citizen is speaking and each and every council member is shuffling papers, looking at their watches, etc. Talk about a council being soooo far out of touch with their people......sad if you ask me.

Great idea, mylo. Folsom Dam Bridge would have been my second choice.

I'm not sure the Cash family would charge for using Johnny Cash's name on the bridge since it's a public project and not a commercial endeavor, but it should be checked out before any decisions are made.
